Neat idea for the pipe. I may have went with a piece of pvc for the pipe, but I still think it was a great adaptation. Love when people think outside the box. Thanks for sharing. Karina

Good Snap Setter?
veedub3 replied to Red Cent's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I have been using this unit for several months. The first one I got back in August 2014. Then right before the Thanksgiving Holiday when orders started to pick up, I ordered the second one. I didn't get the Sylvia deal with the second one I just got the one for $59 with one die and that die was the Segma Snap die. I Spoke with the member here named Syvia via PM before I made my purchase. She answered the few questions I had even though she have pretty much answered many questions in the thread here for other members, and the only negative she stated was that the Tandy line 20 didn't work too well as the post on them were a tad different, so I just ordered my line 20 snaps from GoldStar they are much cheaper anyway. 100 snaps of line 20 from Goldstar is $19.99 with free shipping and no tax for me, they are $27.50 +tax from Tandy so it seemed like a no brainier to just order them from Goldstar. (Plus I use Line 24 mostly) When I got it, it was already set up and ready to go, with the exception of installing the handle - All I had to do was slide a screw through the handle, screw it down, install the dies and I immediately started installing snaps. Takes barely a second and the snap is set. If you set a ton of snaps, then a press is the way to go. November/December I went through over 400 sets of snaps. i would have been bumping my head against a brick wall if I had to set that many snaps by hand. Here are the two presses with dies. (Excuse the mess in the background, I still haven't recovered from the Holiday Orders.) Karina -
Good Snap Setter?

I got the one from GoldStartool.com Click Here. I got the Sylvia Deal (A member here on the forums) it comes with a line 24 die set, a line 20 die set, a rivet die set, plus 100 rivets for $89 with free shipping. (This deal is not on the website you have to call in to get this deal) This saved me a ton of time over the Christmas Holiday. I had so many snaps to do that I actually ordered a a second one so that two of us could be doing snaps at the same time. Before I got this press every now an then i would get a bad snap set and have to pull it apart and redo it. Not one bad snap set since. This tool saved me this Holiday. Karina -

Love, Love, Love them! Karina -
Yes they can be made that way. Contact Texas Die Cutting. I got a quote from them once for exactly what you are wanting. Karina

I have the Dremel scroll saw and it actually has a hook up under the unit for you to attach a shop vac to suck up the dust as you are cutting. I use it mainly for woodworking, but I did use it once to cut leather sometime ago and it was a piece of 10 oz which I was using for soles on a pair of sandals I was making and it cut it just fine with no issues. Awesome way to keep them all together. Mine are all over the place and I usually have to search around a messy bench just to find the one I am looking for. That plastic case they came in I tossed long ago as it was not practical to me. I may have to think up a pouch to keep mine in. Definitely will save me some time. Karina

It is always several ways to do something. I think it boils down to personal preference. Personally I sew mine - I have a stapler, the stops, I have used ex-small rivets, I may even buy loops that are pre-made (they came stapled), but if I make them, I prefer to sew them. Each method works and holds the belt loop together securely. So unless someone is going to rip the belt they just paid for apart, how the belt loop was secured will never be seen. Also your link is broken, it comes up 404 error Karina

Someone posted on here pictures of exactly what you are thinking of doing. If I remember correctly this person has an issue with his hands and using the small stamps. He put something around the stamp to give it more girth. I will see if I can dig that post up for you. Karina

Another vote for Waterhouse Leather. Every piece I order from them is skived to my specifications. Karina

First thanks tboyce for the pattern!! Here is my version I made last week for my own personal use. I have to say the case is a tad tight. I have two pair of eyeglasses, (everyday use, and a dressy pair). The everyday use pair measures 5 1/4" in width and it is really snug but doable. The dressy pair measures 5 3/4" and barely fit at all. I made mine from a scrap of milled vegetable tanned leather I had lying around and decided to go with a strap closure instead of a snap closure because I didn't want to chance scratching the glasses, and really didn't want to line it. When I get a free moment I am going to remake this case but I am going to slightly increase the size of the pattern so that it will fit both sizes of my eyeglasses. Karina

This is the model Grinder I got at the yard sale. (Grinder) It is variable speed from 2000 rpms to 3400 rpms. The chucks used were 1/2" and used so I am not sure what model, and I definitely can't tell you about the left or right threads but I will ask the hubby. Getting a machinist to make an adapter I don't think is necessary, you can buy them from here. I am sure a google search for an arbor adapter will turn up plenty more. Before I got the deal on the bench grinder I was using a cheap 5-speed Drill press from Harbor freight that I put my burnisher in and it works quite well. You can see it here. The lowest speed on this model is 760 rpms. It comes set at 1630 rpms which IMO is too slow so I have it set at 2180 rpms with great results. I have read several threads here where people were using bench grinders at full speed (3000+ rpms) and are successful at achieving great burnished edges, so I wasn't really concerned with the speed, but at $20 and it being a variable speed grinder, I couldn't pass it up. Here are a few threads, but search the forums for bench grinder and you will find many more threads on the topic: 1. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=49942&hl=%2Bgrinder+%2Bburnisher 2. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=51620&hl=%20bench%20%20grinder @treereaper - not sure if you were responding to me but I use a wool buffing pad, no compound is used, and no metal shavings anywhere. It's for after dyeing - when you have to buff off the excess dye, black dye is always a pain in the butt, so I use the wool buffer to speed things along. Karina

Check out Joann's before this Tuesday, they have a 60% off coupon promotion for veteran's day. The coupon can be printed off of their website. That large mat Dwight pictured, is regularly $69.99, I picked up one yesterday for $27.99 plus tax to cover my sewing table. Karina

I looked at it when I was deciding on my setup but that price tag made me go in the direction that most leatherworkers here went in. I already had a dremel with the flex shaft and the different collects and accessories and really didn't need that part, so I found a great used variable speed bench grinder at a yard sale for $20, purchased two drill chucks from Ebay for $8 each, stripped the bench grinder down to the spindles, put a chuck on each end, placed my burnisher on one side and a sanding drum on the other side, all for less than $40. I also have a polisher/buffing wheel that I use on it. I have heard good things about Foredom but I personally couldn't justify paying the price for it when I could get a similar setup for much, much cheaper, but others may have a difference of opinion on this. Oh my! I have fought with dye and lost my battle as well. The only good thing about it for me was that it was out in my garage where I airbrush my items. An entire Quart bottle of Fiebings bit the dust. Karina

I am in Fayetteville and although the Lithia Springs store is closer, I feel the Tandy in Norcorss gets the better leather. (Could be that my mind is just playing tricks on me with this thinking ) I just got in a side of bridle leather last week, that's some good stuff, I am sure your customer will love it. Karina

Not an Austin Alternative but just something to think about. If you are paying $14.60 sq.ft for Austin Leather that must mean you are not getting the Elite Pricing. Elite pricing is $124.00 that would be about $9.5 sq.ft. (The shoulder I got was 12.9 sq.ft.) Every couple of months, they drop it to $99 each for everyone so you have to watch for it and when it goes on sale grab a few sides. (I usually find out about it being on sale from being on their email list) Also, you can get the Elite Membership free by providing them a copy of your EIN number which you can get online free and print out within minutes. Take it to Tandy and boom you get the Elite pricing. I am an Elite member and that is how I got mine. The Austin shoulder is 8 to 9 oz and has like a pebble grain to it, and so far all the suggestions noted above have either been 4 to 5 oz or have a smooth finish so I just a thought I would put this out there just in case you really want to stick with the Austin.
