Tote Bag
MonicaJacobson replied to krominix's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
*shrug* I don't know - I wouldn't worry about it. Most tote handles are attached even less securely - I tend to overcompensate. I attached the straps to my (rather heavy 4 lb) bag in the same way, and it's going strong 18 months later. -
Thanks!

Tote Bag
MonicaJacobson replied to krominix's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That's a nice tote. I like the inset straps better than the usual design. I'd be tempted to add chicago screws, since people always over-load their totes, but the stitching is probably fine. -
Hi Derle, I looked at your website and I love your work. I also like the sketched people modeling the armor. Awesome idea.

I don't remember if you guys experienced the emu craze, but it went through Texas in the 90's. When they abruptly became valueless, people were letting them loose everywhere. My grandfather bought emus, and they later spooked the neighbors' five or six longhorn cows into jumping the fence and making for the highway. Fortunately, nobody hit one before the neighbors were able to round them back up.

First Messenger Bag
MonicaJacobson replied to lmk's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Looks pretty cool for a 1st bag. Of course, there are a few things that you could change, like moving the stitching line closer to the edge, and of course, improved smoothness and accuracy in your stitching line. But that will come with more practice. I would choose almost anything over Tandy's oil tanned. What I have used from Tandy is okay, but it doesn't really give me great confidence that it's a very good leather. You can find decent leather at much better prices at www.maverickleathercompany.com . Call them (they are very friendly) and tell them what you want the leather for, and I think they'll be able to help you for a price that is comparable to Tandy, even with shipping. Lol, if you want Tandy oil tanned, I have some I want to get rid of, and I'll sell it to you at a discount. -
Folded Leather Bag
MonicaJacobson replied to CarlGabriel's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Pretty cool bag! The stitching along the side is very interesting. It looks like it took a while. If it's actually fully lined, I would generally put a line of stitching along the top to ensure that the pigskin never comes loose, but otherwise, looks like a really nice product. -
What Is This Tool? May Not Be Leather Tool.

Ha, I'm interested. We had an escape-prone Holstein, growing up. We finally sold the thing. But not before we all got pink-eye from it. -
Wow, very cool backpack. Thanks for the pattern!

What Is This Tool? May Not Be Leather Tool.

My husband walked by and informed me that it was a cattle trocar. I looked it up, and he appears to be correct: https://www.enasco.com/product/C00308N -
I got my start at Tandy (3 years ago), and the staff are extremely helpful. However, I have found that there is a better source for everything that you can get at Tandy. I'm still grateful for Tandy, but the quality of hardware is better at Buckleguy, the quality of leather has decreased at Tandy lately (from what I saw before I stopped buying there a year ago), and is therefore equal or better at almost anywhere else, and a better value almost anywhere else, including shipping. I did buy all my fiebings dyes at Tandy, so that was nice. I would never tell someone they shouldn't buy from Tandy, but I would give them links to some better alternatives, once they've gotten over the first disorienting flood of information. Tandy is a great place to help you figure out what you're actually doing. It's not a place where you can get the best value for money, by any stretch, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a place.

My favorites are the black ones. Going to be in Atlanta, huh? If you're in or around Smyrna, you should drop by. Have a great visit with your family! -

3 Bags

Very nice work. I especially like the first and last one. -
That's what I had found, so I'm glad to have that confirmed. I was asking to see what kind of edging I had missed. I guess I'm not trying hard enough to round the edges as I burnish. I just finished a wallet with black essex, and the edges were in no way rounded. Oh well.

I think tumbled is just softened by tumbling it in a large drum, probably with a large batch of the same leather.
-
I had never heard of the term. Is it as soft as tumbled?

Nice job! what kind of beveling tool are you using, if I might ask?
