Need Help! Can't Solve Cowboy Stitching Issue...
silverbullet replied to NoPleather's topic in Sewing Leather
It almost to me looks like the thread is thinner where it's pulling thru, which it could be a tension issue , ck the lubrication in the machine too. If something's not moving smooth it could cause problems. Just my thoughts -
Good luck with your new machine, and no worries if you need help Bob at toledo will be there for you. He's helped me and lots others on here. If and when I need something for any of my machines he usually knows exactly what I need and how to remedy the problems. I'm not lucky enough to have a cowboy machine but I've several old babies I've picked up , an old singer 211w155, 29-4 ,Adler 30-10 and 124 ? I think , but he's had parts and advise when needed. Just trying to say he's there for you if needed.

This site is like another I'm on , we are always willing to help others and usually with no thoughts of any payment. It's called mentoring , a way of passing down the things we do to try to save the things we like. -

silverbullet replied to Bruce Evans's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Haven't been on for awhile and you have done an amazing job restoring your machine. Man I wish I could get around and ck some of the junk yards around here. I sure bet theres more of these just sitting somewhere . But they're getting harder to find for sure and when they do get found in a barn or other outbuilding the people think they're gold. And I guess in a way they are right . All said and done you have done a really great job , be proud of it and good luck with her. I copied the picture and saved it , I liked it so much thanks , Gary -
Great looking holsters, haven't been on for awhile ,sure nice to see a beautiful holster . I couldn't show mine it's made to use what I call it ain't pretty but it works and will last a lifetime . All leather needs is a little care . Great job wish my hands would let me do lacing like that. Keep it up have fun and live well.

Belt Knife Sheath W/carving
silverbullet replied to Basically Bob's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Very nice , brings back memories of a knife my father carried when rabbit hunting, he used it at least 40 years . The sheath stands out because his was like that not tooled as much but the leaf still shows up . Carried in his huntin coat gave it carracter and wear . At some point he resewed the edge with a piece of wire looped to make an edge. I've been tempted but won't ever change it . Thanks for the way you made it. Really good job hope it last forever. -
.45Lc Holster
silverbullet replied to Jon P's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Gotta start somewhere , try doing some tooling on scrap leather till you find out what design you like then just do it . Be brave take the first step we all have too. My stamping and carving pleases me so make what you like . Then if others see and like your work go from there , the more you do it the better you will get , come on start stamping , Silverbullet -
Green And Black Holster
silverbullet replied to Rohn's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Hey I like the green too. Never tried it on a holster but it turned out really well. Yupp you might have a new trend in holsters ,go green shall we say . No pun intended not everybody likes the same thing , I myself always try to be different and never worried what others thought about my preference. There are lots of people who don't follow the norm that's what makes us Americans. Nice work on this baby but you always do good work . Gary , Silverbullet -
Old Tech, New Holster
silverbullet replied to Cogs's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Want to clear a room wear that to a school meeting . Yupp it'll be hands up and hit the floor . The way all the cry babies are now adays but I love it think my new cell leather will be even more illegal looking to all the antis . Should sell great hope you can make enough to keep up with the demand. Good looking and well made . Gary , Silverbullet -
As constabulary Said most I worth money lots of parts can be found or made. If under $1000 , I don't think you'll get hurt but try looking it over for really worn areas and missing parts keep the price where your comfortable. Hope it works out well and you get a good one . Gary

Lead And Collar All In One
silverbullet replied to the gafer's topic in Collars, Cuffs, Leashes and Leads
Think you should use a swivel somewhere on leash . Most dogs never just walk straight, at least mine won't, good idea tho . -
I'm no expert but I look at other items sewn and judge what to sew with. 69 seems to work well on wallets and thinner leather items . Now for heavier like holsters I choose to sew with at least a 207 , even that depends on the thickness too. If you want your stitches to show off your work or high lite the design pick the size and color you or your customer like. If you sew by hand the awl you use should be just big enough to press your needle thru but not with thin thread the holes look gigantic done that way. Well at least to me they do. Hope this might help nothing is in stone even doing leather . It's what you like some like rivets and sewn areas. Just keep having fun do the things that appeal to you and your customers. The patcher might not handle the leather your sewing they do pretty good with up to 1/8" thickness like shoe leather. Get near 1/4" and things start going haywire. Mine sews with 92 thread real well but 69 seems she likes it best. If you take your time and don't press her she will do a lot for you. I have two a 29-4 and an Adler 30-1 the Adler will sew with 128 thread but she likes 92 , keep working her she will let you know what she will do. Contac Bob Kovar at Toledo sewing he has many parts and knows these like the back of his hand great to deal with and will help the best he can . Gary , Silverbullet

The bobbins for the 29 are very small that's why the thread size of 69 is about tops. The machine will not so much more then about 1/4 " thick without doing what your talking about. And they only run one direction on the drive wheel . I have a 29 and the Adler 30-1 both sew very well as long as you take your time and let them do ther job . Are you putting the bobbin in correctly and using the the tension spring on top of the thread I know watch some of the vids on YouTube they will help. Silverbullet

Things I've Learned About Leatherworking Last Week
silverbullet replied to DoubleC's topic in All About Us and Off Topic
I learned the people at the Allentown store do care and try to help. When they had the blackfriday sales it was in store only. Well being in a wheelchair and not able to get there guess what no sale for me. Well I sent an email and a few days later they called me and said they would have sent my order anyway but the items were sold out. Then she called back to say someone ws going to return the items I needed at the special price , and to be even better no charge on the delivery this time . Two nice pieces of leather came this week looks like a top notch 8 to 9 ounce side too. Thanks a lot Tandy of Allentown I'll be ordering more items now. Silverbullet -
Frank ck you pm we try but were not there to ck everything plus we wouldn't even no to ck the spring itself . Silverbullet

I don't think anyone uses needles that long on leather. Unless its a thick leather saddle then the needle is more like a spike with a slot to lay the rawhide strap in it. Sail makers and furniture makers use long thick ones to go thru material and foam . Of course who knows about those ritzi people could be yupp ,Silverbullet

Singer 45K89 Info And Help Wanted
silverbullet replied to muzisch's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Nice machine buy it the fun of working on it will make you appreciate it more the screws shouldn't be a big problem , looks like its had a pretty good life with lots of time still in her. If you don't fix it you can part it out and make more then you paid anyway . I'd buy the oil box if you do that. Hope she works good for you I have an Adler made like it and love it . I think the number is 104 mo or something like that. But she works for me and I have about $1,100 in mine . I added a reducer which made it nice and slow. Silverbullet -
You can use a 1 amp or stronger sewing machine replacement motor with the foot pedal. Mounted off the back with the same type motor mount on the singer style. Just need to drill two holes. Then cut the belt to fit . Or you can get elaborate and mount a servo under the table and hook the treadle to the motor control . I made mine from an old pump motor that had a small shaft that fit the sewing machine pulley. Added a hand rheostat for mine it's what I had around . Works for me quite well . Silverbullet

Try different needles , somtimes materials make the thread not feed right and the type of point on the needle helps by not making the hole to big or to tight . Even different threads will make your tension seem messed up . I'm no pro but do read and watch sewing vids. Ck some YouTube the sail rite guys show a lot of sunbrella sewing.
