  1. Maybe their leather is soft-er or thicker or front/back panels are softer but the gussets are thicker. Maybe they have "bones" in them like the old fashioned corsets. No way thin soft leather can stand up on its own. Maybe the examples you're looking at are filled with items that help it stand. Pictures might help.
  2. I'm wondering why you're using soft leather and then wanting it to stand up? I made a huge tote with soft outer and soft pigskin glued in liner. Never made to stand up. I built it with a shoulder strap to help with the weight. It's made hundreds of trips to the supermarket and gets loaded up with all the heavy stuff. The strap leaves two hands for two other bags.
  3. @Boguita sounds like you have much to offer as well as learn. Welcome.
  4. Been thinking bout getting one of these. Do they heat up instantly? Have a soldering iron that does that but far too bulky. Is there a preference? Longer lasting battery etc?
  5. Thanks Brian. I'll hopefully find a better position for the through table bit. Over time that might saw through the table a little bit..
  6. My clicker press is sitting on an old singer flatbed table and I've just remembered it still has the knee lift on it so I'll be robbing that. It still has the clutch motor on it as well if anyone wants it (Kent UK). I think I harboured thoughts on making a bench grinder/buffer at the time.
  7. Turns out the frame is more important than I thought. This is the last machine I bought. I've brought the two treadles closer together than they were and I still don't like it. I'm used to a knee lift but that bar in between makes it even harder to get used to a treadle and I'm fairly sure I'll be changing to a knee lift at some point.
  8. I know nothing about it but it's got a new servo motor on it for £100. The person selling it can't have much idea - in the picture the head is on the wrong way round. Might do someone a turn. Marketplace – Industrial Singer Sewing Machine | Facebook
  9. This is what I do to the double sided tape on the back of my steel cutting rules.

I'm no expert on 801s but I have no problem with slow roller. I think that's what the pulleys are for, so the knife is up to speed from the get go.
  11. Thanks Fred. I guess it's not doing any good sitting on the shelf.
  12. How do you work out the size of a hat?
  13. Mine's not really really finished either. Was made for someone who reneged on the deal and it doesn't fit me so it's not finished.
  14. I made that one Fred.
  15. That's what I've done Tom, just glued 3 layers of felt onto a sanding belt but it was an experiment that could be better. What I hope to achieve eventually is enough soft layers with the top layer being something like canvas or denim so I can put some compound on it so I can sink an edge into it and take the corners off and burnish to a shine all in one go.
  16. For me it's the ability to run two different grades or more importantly for me is the possibility of burnishing easily and quickly. At the moment I have a couple layers of felt giving partial results. More experiments needed, maybe a canvas belt, maybe a leather belt flesh side out.
  17. You're very welcome. Just wish I could take you to JT Batchelors in London. An old Victorian mews building that sells all the normal stuff, leather, tools, hardware etc but also with narrow aisles with dusty boxes full of inspiration that haven't been seen for years.
  18. The first thing that illuminated this practice for me was the "Wagon Wheel". When I was a whippersnapper they were enormous, around 6/7 inches x 1/2 inch. Now they're the size of a biscuit.
  19. Some kind of roller with an edge treatment attached (beveller maybe) for soft leather. It can't be pushed so it would have to be like a minute angled lawnmower.
  20. Haven't found them but narrowed it down to almost certainly, www.londontrimmings.co.uk Amazing place.
  21. I'll try to find them.
  22. RIP Eldor. It's a facet of forums like this that give and exchange information freely that we can feel sad about someone we've never met.
  23. Had to dig but I knew I had some of these somewhere but can't remember where from. If you don't have any joy, come back and I'll find em.
  24. Don't remember having trouble finding the belts but I also have a box of these that I can make belts from. LYFJXX Emery Cloth Roll, 6 Grits Abrasive Sand Paper Roll for Woodworking, 80 150 240 320 400 600 Grit Sandpaper for Metal, Each Roll 8 Meters : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools
  25. I don't remember paying anything like that price. Maybe my belts are thinner?
