  1. Matt, you must use JT Batchelor a lot. I bought one of these from them for not a lot and it's a lovely piece of steel. This guy likes it a lot.
  2. Halitech, definitely looks like it's worth a look. Does anyone vouch for this one? Biker, I agree, doing a skive for a turned edge by hand does look scary. You'd make sure you did those edges before you invested in a load of work in case it went tits up. Matt, nice offer but if I can't sort it myself I might as well go out and buy it. I'll always be up for a cuppa or a beer should the opportunity arise. MDV, I can see me getting one of those soon.
  3. Thanks again guys. I think I've finally learned. Over £100 for belt skive and lots of practice with a manual. I hope those six inch jobbies are all the same cos I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for a better grade.
  4. Well ideally both. Do the six inch blade ones do edge skiving as well as belt skiving and what's the cheapest way to it?
  5. So what manual skivers will do a whole belt and edges as well? As I said it's not gonna get overworked and I can't justify spending big money although knowing me if I get really into it that'll change.
  6. Will this cheapo be ok for a newbie with a hobby? Probably one or two projects a month for belt and edge skiving? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Splitter-Set-Cutter-Skiver-Aluminum-Craft-Leather-Metal-Machine-Paring-Kit-Edge/401795252129?hash=item5d8cdcffa1:g:3QkAAOSw8BNdEZ9A
  7. I think it's a long handled fruit picker that should have a spring in the jaws and a string in the bottom hole.
  8. Thanks guys! There are it seems many versions and of course vanity comes into it. I'll have to get her to choose. No good making something she won't wear.
  9. She won't carry a handbag. Any good patterns around? She also has back problems and was gonna make her a support belt. I suppose combining the two would be overkill?
  10. I'll just throw this out there for what it's worth. I've used "Gorilla" glue a couple of times. It works on moisture so the work has to be dampened. Don't know how flexible it is but for stickability on leather I can vouch for it's effectiveness after I weighed down the work with some books but inadvertently moved the work. Next day I had to cut the leather to get it apart. Doh! Have plenty of clamps now.
  11. A very good summary.
  12. Are the patterns in ASs download ready to be printed the same way that Nigels are?
  13. I'm a complete newbie and I might have it all wrong but I've been striving to get the stitch line as close to "the work" as possible. If a seam is say 1/4 inch wide and the stitch line is 1/8th then you have 1/8th of the seam relying on a glue line, that's if glue has been used. If not surely there's a potential for stretch
  14. Plus one! The OP is just a whippersnapper. (Looked peculiar writing that. Wonder where it came from?)
  15. Great inspiring work for a newbie such as myself. Well done.

I like this a lot. I've been pondering how to make a pouch for my night vision and this is just right. One piece from the front lip all the way around and up to include the front flap. Thank you. Looks good by the way.
  17. I was experimenting to see how much I could cut out hand stitching with a ground down outer foot. I was feeling quite pleased with myself at a plan coming together. - Then I broke the bobbin case. :(
  18. Thank you Folker. Once again you come to my rescue. Let me know the cost.
  19. Don't know how I managed it but the center post of the bobbin carrier on my Durkopp 239 has snapped off. Can someone tell me what models are compatible and where I might find a replacement please? Thanks.
  20. Thanks guys. Appreciate all these little gems of information. This is the stuff the books don't tell you.
  21. So glad mine is working now. I would have had nowhere to put em. Well spotted.
  22. Looks good to me. I've just recently found out that this stamping malarkey isn't as easy as some people make it look. Well done.
  23. Welcome and well done. Dunno about the learning bit, you could certainly teach me a thing or two.
  24. I think you've nailed it Mike. Just wanna get used to it now.
