    toolmakers

chris, i just got some tools from barry king. i live in australia and i rang him direct. he took my order himself and delivery was swift. the tools were about $20 each but they are amazing and a joy to use. i didnt understand the huge difference they could make, but i am definitely a convert now. My humble advice is, if you have $100 to spend dont buy 20 at $5, buy 5 at $20 Barry King Tools 184 N. Main Sheridan, WY 82801 USA Phone: (307) 672-5657 FAX: (307) 672-5235
  4. barra, too easy for a true aussie, maybe save the translation for a few days tina, just so you dont get yourself in trouble.... to call someone a wanker is very different to having a wank!! lol
  5. love the carving, but i love the swivel knives even more!! where did you get the ones with the brown handles?
  6. wow tina, so close....only missed a few... the full translation will come later...lol
  7. The australian government recently bought in a citizenship test, but many people think a translation of the following paragraph would be enough. Can you translate...you will be an honorary aussie In the arvo I went to the olds for a barbie. It was BYO so I took some sangers and snags and a slab. The forecast was for a stinker so I was in my stubbies and thongs. Shazza had acca dacca blasting and was pissed as a parrot. It wouldn't be long before she had a chunder! Bluey had one eye glued to the reruns of the aerial ping pong on the box and the other on Shazza, but he had buckleys chance there. Out the back the liquid amber was flowing, the mozzies and blowies had everyone doing the Australian salute. Davo had come in his budgie smugglers, he is such a wanker and a cheap skate to boot. We ran out of grog so I jumped in my ute and went to the local. I grabbed some mackers on the way back. I was nackered by now so I grabbed a possie next to shazza who was talking piffle about some feral yobbo at work. I was too stuffed to answer, so she spat the dummy and pissed off.
  8. very creative, did you design this yourself or is it off an album cover? nice work

I knew i should have left him natural...decided to paint him, that didnt work, rubbed that off..well most of it came off, got out the new airbrush and had a good result but i kept fiddling with the color and in the end it was a disaster...evil dude now has about 10 layers of color on him. In the end i just airbrushed the whole thing with a white luminescent fabric paint and now he just glows in the sun.. message to self...leave well enough alone..dont fiddle
  13. very nice, love the red

tom, i was not saying that this was you, i got the idea from the tattoo link you sent me, but now that i look again, maybe.....lol i have carved a few celtic designs on some quivers but other than that my carving lessons were 30 years ago in school and my tools are that old. this was done on 2mm leather, i carved the outlines (with my 30 year old swivel knife that has never been sharpened) then molded the leather from the back with modeling tools that have little balls at the ends. after i was happy with the molding i then did the beveling last. i tried beveling, then molding but the bevel all got push back up. I used the four tools i bought from barry, two bevelers, one big (he sent the wrong size, but i will keep it) and one small and one round and the background tool. Leathernut the tools were $20 each and the backgrounder 30 but they are really worth it. I ordered direct from him.

My new tools from barry king arrived today....oh how sweet they are!! On advice from some good friends i thought i would try something different and decided to give the carving thing a go.....this piece is tomswede tattoo flash inspired, thanks tom. Now i have to decide what to do with him....dye, paint ....decisions to be made. I decided to post a photo before i stuffed up the next stage..if i dont stuff it up, i will post another pic. cheers

  18. very nice knot work, nice colors
  19. hey guys, i always cut the eyes before molding and i also cut the outside shape, but this sometimes gets cut again or trimmed as the mask develops.. these damm masks seem to have a life of there own and sometimes they just need a haircut..
  20. i have tried designing some tribal patterns, feel free to use them.
  21. you guys are right about not having my own space, unfortunately my house is overflowing, we dont have a garage so stuff is stored everywhere! there is no money for a shed etc....however we do have a dining room for 'special occasions' that doesnt get used that often (not the kitchen table for everyday meals where i do the leatherwork at the moment).. i think i will get rid of that table and large sideboard (where do i store all that sh**) and claim that area as my own. thanks everyone for your helpful and kind thoughts
  22. you guys are sooo sweet
  23. Have you ever felt that you were stuck in a leatherwork rut...at the moment i am not happy with anything i am making, nothing is turning out the way i want. Maybe i am rushing the work, wanting to get something finished (before i have to clear the table to serve meals). Maybe the frustration is feeding on itself and coming out in the work. Have any of you hit this wall? Does it pass or do i need to go back to basics and make some very simple things? Damm, i sound like a big baby having a tantrum...lol
  24. very nice, your niece will love this for sure..
  25. nice work joseph...dont be shy, we love to see everyones work.
