Thank you. Ill give them a ring tomorrow. I would hate to see a collar weather poorly.

Id be happy to buy it if someone sells it...however I was asked to commission a project with light gray leather. What I ahve read is that fiebings recommends using their custom reducer to lighten their black dye. If there is an alternative to their reducer (like thinner) id rather try it than buying a $2 4 oz bottle plus shipping. Otherwise I wouldnt mind buying gray drum dyed leather as im sure I could market it to my customer base. The heavier weight the better if prefinished. Thanks!

White and "Cobra Brown" AK-20 strap cutter?
JerseyFirefighter replied to JerseyFirefighter's topic in Leather Machinery
Cobra Steve answered it for me. The website pics are older versions and that all new are the quintessential "Cobra Brown" -
Saw a fellow leatherworker showing off his new Cobra strap cutter from LeatherMachineCompany a month back. I started shopping for a strap cutter and see that the AK-20 they market on their site is white. Does anyone know if there's a newer model, or any particular reason for a case change from their standard Cobra machine colors? The one I saw a month back had that Cobra brown. Curious about the difference before I drop $2k on a machine shipped all the way cross country. Thanks

I do not as my experiences have been using ebay (in which suppliers come and go) If I could only get the bottles I found last year. Essentially it is key to find bottles that accept replacement tips... as if youre not careful with cleaning and storing your bottles with paint in them it will ruin the tip.

Needle tip paint bottle applicators. 20 gauge needle for all around letter painting.. and a 22-24 for very fine detailing. That and painting a few thousand letters with it and you'll never understand how you did it with a brush every again.

Amazing detail. Do you have an instagram page by chance? Edit Nevermind! Saw your post about the IG thief. I happened to see it the other day and couldnt remember where I saw it.

What's the length of Chicago Screws do you use?
JerseyFirefighter replied to myjtp's topic in How Do I Do That?
I think I got mine from Weaver or Springfield. I use a mix of 3/16 and 1/4" screws depending on the application. I agree that you want to be at least halfway down the shaft when tightening them. I feel that unless you want the two pieces to swivel, you would want to see the leather depress as you tighten it. EITHER WAY.. use blue locktite. That tool you have will be a life saver if something ever comes back for "customer adjustment" after the fact. -
Just got my new osborne awl and blade the other day from Weaver. I just use it for marking though so I really dont need is sharp.

Collar and straps
JerseyFirefighter replied to JerseyFirefighter's topic in Collars, Cuffs, Leashes and Leads
Agreed. There are a few colors that stand out really well on black leather. Neon Green is another color that has wonderful contrast against the black. -
I have watched tutorials that mention that if you are running a straight line stitch that doesnt loop around to where you started you back stitch the beginning and end. If you are completing a stitched loop, you over stitch when you come around to the beginning stitches by about 2-3 stitch holes rather than back stitch. I use heat to singe the thread end but im considering getting a more close quarter scissor and doing a slight dab of glue applied by a blunted awl. I've noticed if you singe the thread after a little rub here and there it is prone to fray back out to its original length.

Id love to get a sample of their drum dyed skirting and old world harness leather in 13/15. I can probably swing a 10 side order that would last a few months.

I'd like to think i've become quite the regular with Nick from Studio-N over the past few months. Out of all of the custom stamps I have ordered, this one is my favorite. One of my daughters wanted a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle belt. Turned a quick turtle belt and a heart belt for her twin sister for them to be the coolest first grader in their school. Thanks Nick for coming through with such awesome stamps in such a short time frame.

I REALLY love it when a customer knows how to take a photo. I made twin collars for a fellow dobie owner... and some recent strap projects I had going on. The Christmas surge hasn't slowed down for us and we're sitting on about 40 pending orders.

Natural Beeswax ... the last for this year
JerseyFirefighter replied to dfrensdorff's topic in Old/Sold
Ohh my goodness. sorry I missed it. Been looking for a big block or 5 of the stuff. Anyone know where you can get larger blocks instead of the smaller bars that seem to be everywhere? At this point im about to buy some larger mold pans and melt them into a bar myself. -
Having my doubts about Springfield Leather
JerseyFirefighter replied to CaptQuirk's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I went through this with them in regards to the gallon of dye. It's a haz mat fee for shipping a gallon. Oddly enough you can buy 4 quarts which equals a gallon and be saved that ridiculous hazmat fee. I didnt mind them dropping the free shipping. It was nice while it lasted. It seems as though they had gotten worse along the time everything they changed the way they process their order and everything is labeled from Rusty. Not saying he is the issue, but out of the dozen or so orders I have made since then, they have listed something as being backordered on the packing slip, and I received it in that very same order. I then get an email from Monique with a bill for the backordered item. It has happened on almost a half dozen times since July. They also need to shop for a new web designer. -
A Little Luck in the Stamping Press Department
JerseyFirefighter replied to bikermutt07's topic in Leather Machinery
I use a harbor freight 1 ton press for stamping. I put a 6x10" 1/2" steel plate over the included base plate and it works just fine. I get drilling the ram if youre constantly using one stamp, but ive found stamping multiple letters or stamps it's ridiculously faster to just line them up on the strap and fire off one after another just using the solid ram against the stamp. -
Congrats! I'd be losing my mind having to deal with a commercial space and putting out product. Here's to you for having the stones to do it! Best of luck!

Im interested in the remedy to this. Particularly for dog collars since I have some suede and calf skin sitting around not being used. Would the appropriate method be to over cut the liner around the outer piece, and cement them together around something like say a coffee can or pvc pipe so it molds correctly? Or is there a trick to glueing prior to stitching that compensates for the bend in the final product?

Might have finally found some. For those interested it is linked below. I honestly thought I had purchased regular copper Dees before but it might just be they were antique brass. Any other sources are welcome. https://www.etsy.com/listing/259891298/set-of-16-antique-finish-1-12-metal-d?ref=market

Looking for a copper d ring in 1.5". I can make a 1" o ring work in its place... Ive found plenty of copper finish buckles and belt keeps but no rings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Angelus direct is ridiculous with their advertising spam. I buy from Dharma Trading co. which really isnt much better but their prices are some of the cheaper ive found. $4.50 for 4 oz bottles or $4.09 each if you buy more than 5 bottles. http://www.dharmatrading.com/paints/angelus-leather-paint.html

I only buy double cap rivets from Weaver and Springfield Leather. There are a few more suppliers I would trust when buying solid brass or nickel over brass rivets. When I started I used plated rivets on my own projects and saw how quickly the finish wore off during the course of the year. I also prefer rivet and burrs for my major attachment points. I use both copper and brass dependent on matching the rest of the hardware of my straps. I guess you can say I formed a mistrust of double cap rivets early on. Most likely to my own misunderstanding on how to properly set them in the beginning, however I would rather have overkill and know ill never have any issues over hardware failure.
