Havnt gotten to use one on leather but I can give you my input from when I use to paint with them. Double action for sure, allows far better control and after some practice is easy to use (atleast IMHO) and if you ever get into doing designs and such you can do some really nice stuff. Generally you get what you pay for, I would recommend either badger which I allways had good luck with. They have everything from middle road to real nice. The 150 is a middle of the road that will get you nice results if I remember right. The other brand I was familier with is Paasche, they make some nice stuff also. My friends allways used paasche so I dont have much in the way of help for that brand just know it got nice results. -

Contributions to Leatherworker
MADMAX22 replied to Denise's topic in Announcements and Administrivia
THanks a bunch Johanna and if it wasnt for this place and putting the silly idea that I could make my own motorcycle seat into my head I would have never started leatherworking. Ofcourse now 2yrs later and a couple grand short Ive just cut the leather for my seat. Stupid leather junkies got me hooked too . Gotta get my donation in. -
Just my experience but Im not very experienced lol. The feibings dye which is what I use also in full strength will take neer forever to get to stop rubbing off. I am not sure if you delute them or not but I delute mine about 50/50 with denatured alcohol (grab it at lowes or home depot cheap). I will do usually a couple of coats then let it completely dry. Then I buff it for a while. Then I oil it and then let it sit overnight to absorb the oil and dry. Most recommend 24hrs for the oil to set in so I try to hold to that but not allways. Once that is done I buff it some more. Then depending on where I am at with my project Ill go ahead and seal it with what ever you plan on sealing with. I personally for my projects generally use either leather balm with atom wax or tan coat. I usually do a couple of layers and LET IT DRY between layers. And not to thick either on the sealer or it doesnt work right. Once that is done I usually do a thin layer of aussie wax or snoseal. Thats depends on the project though and is just my own thing,

THat is pretty cool. Very nice work. Whos tools are those hidepounder, they look very nice.

Very nice, ecspecially for your first one. I hope my first seat turns out that well.

Thanks a bunch guys. I think Ill give that a go Hilly. I assume that barbours thread you can dye to get it different colors before you wax it, if so does the regular leather dye work or should I use like a RIT dye or something similer made for fabric?
-
Looking for some unwaxed linen thread for handsewing. I used the waxed stuff from springfeild and like it but trying to get the ends setup for for the needle is kind of a pain. I would like to play with some unwaxed stuff and use my own wax/resin mix on them if possible. I just havnt scene any suppliers of such. Thanks

Very cool design.

The only hides Ive gotten from ebay are stingray and ostrich legs. The ostrich legs are ok but that was what was described. They were from florida I think. The guy is very quick with shipping. The stingray comes from over seas but the guy I ordered several from arrived fairly quickly (about 2 weeks) and were all in great shape and looked really good. Oh and I also got some snake skins from the same guy and they were nice as well. Never tried vegtan or anything else from ebay, I stick to the regular dealers for that. Waterhouse has a deal on double shoulders right now, pretty cheap. There deals are usually decent leather ecspecially for the price. Ive got a hide on the way from Kevin as well since I wanted to try out the herman oak. Ordered one but it was in pretty bad shape, quick email and Kevin is sending a new one with return postage paid for the other. Very happy with the whole experience. Kevin is a standup guy and very good to work with.

Thats way cool. Congrats and best of luck to ya.

Yeah I agree, theres more to them then meets the eye if you go even somewhat fancy.

Very cool, kind of a sinister look to it.

Hey guys just thought I would share what I did to my stitching pony. Im sure its been done before but oh well. The standard tandy stitching pony which is a very big pain in the butt IMHO to use. First took off the little wing nut. I left the bolt going thru the clamps but put a nut on the inside to keep it steady. Not sure if you need to leave it in there but I figured it would help keep them aligned. You could probably remove it. Then I covered the ends in leather and tacked them inplace. Other wise youll scratch up your work or leave marks. Then I got one of these http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=prod...&lpage=none I use that about 3 or 4" down from the top and I put the handle portion pointing toward me so that it doesnt catch the string or lace. There you have it. Sorry no pictures as I am without a camera right now. This atleast for me greatly improves the usability of the little stitching pony. Now I can sit back in my chair and stitch away.

Im currently making one that is a two piece, tooled with initials, padded and fully lined with suede. The leather is 5oz. Im doing this for a buddy at work and am giving him a good deal plus factoring in my lower experience with leather work am only charging $75. If I was doing this as a business and could turn out a little better quality I would have no issues charging $130 or so for this strap if not more. Thats probably still a good price considering the work going into it being hand stitched and all. Now this is just a estimate, not a laid out time with hourly figured and all that just a off the top of my head figure.

Those are pretty cool. The shark adds enough texture to add a little something to them. Good job.

Filling in structure of cruiser seat
MADMAX22 replied to MADMAX22's topic in Motorcycles and Biker Gear
Thanks, I figured it would work. I ended up not doing it and just cut a few pieces of neoprene to fill in the larger areas. Now I gotta finish the leather portion (the hard part). -

lol I love it dude. Great job and excellent idea. -
Ok new design!
MADMAX22 replied to jbird's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Looks real good overall. I like the one piece front molded to shape when it works out lol. My only suggestion if you dont mind is the back piece, I personally would make it one piece that folds over for the snap, that way you dont have to sew the flap on. I think it makes the back portion a little cleaner and you can cut it out of one piece of leather. -
Full Custom Wildey gun rig
MADMAX22 replied to DCKNIVES's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Question for ya, on the holster and other inlays did you double up the leather over the whole thing or just behind the inlay? It doesnt look like there is any stitching accross the top of the holster. Do you rely on glue to hold the double layer of leather if you use that. Thanks.
