  1. Welcome! Hope you have as much fun and learn as much as I have.
  2. Probably safe to buy the medium. What are you making? Belts and holsters? I don't use a groover for most projects but I see wisdom in using it for items where durability is at a premium. It certainly isn't required, in my opinion but many will disagree and they have good reason based upon their experience.
  3. this technique works pretty good and if you use them a lot, is worth fashioning.
  4. Yeah, but I don't have a leg to stand on in the matter, so.......
  5. That groover is OK, but you have to use a straight edge and keep it at a constant angle. If you "wobble", the groove will as well. Best to practice so that you know how it will behave. I've wondered about those. They are certainly cheap enough. I presume that they can be sharpened like the "typical" beveler?
  6. Hypothetically? Right..... Looks awesome but the model lacks personality. I like that stud closure. Plenty secure while being easy to fasten.
  7. Thank you so much for the update. I'm still praying for everyone down there just as I am for those in Tennessee that recently suffered a disastrous tornado. Friends of mine have a daughter down there and she is a school teacher. Her entire school was destroyed. They are still trying to figure out what to do. Fortunately this week is their spring break, so they have a little extra time to work on a plan. When I hear of tragedies, I'm reminded of something I heard on the radio. A pastor was talking about hardships and he used the phrase, "Good people happen to bad things". We all suffer, nobody gets a pass. But it is those times that we connect with good people and are reminded how good that feels. I pray that lots of good people descend on both Australia and Tennessee and anywhere else they are needed.
  8. I like contact adhesives and have had good success with the Weldwood Contact Cement in red cans.
  9. I love the stark contrast. A pretty, but not exceptional leather suddenly became gorgeous.
  10. thanks for sharing that, their products look great.
  11. The magnets are a great touch. You can also create a space to hold some beeswax to use on thread. Lots of ways to customize.
  12. Easy enough to experiment so go to your local Lowes or Home Depot and obtain some clear plexiglass. They'll cut to size for you or they might have some pre-cuts. Not a big investment. The red, high density plastic is supposed to be really good and they use it under clicker dies. Tandy had some for sale recently and it was cheaper than I had seen before. I have good luck with the white "cutting board" material, but sounds like you haven't had good luck with them. They aren't all exactly the same. Some are denser than others.
  13. In case others aren't aware of what 'Agenda 21' is... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agenda_21
  14. I reported the broken link to the administrator of the site. Thanks for noticing that and mentioning it. Yes, for a finished look you will want to coat the edges, with either the Tokonole as mentioned or an edge paint. Depends upon how much work you want to invest too. With proper sanding and application, some of the edge paints produce amazing edges. I would think the Tokonole would be quickest and easiest and still give a nice, finished look.
  15. I agree with zuludog. Get some veg tan leather, probably 3-4 oz. and experiment a little. For some items you may wish to do some wet forming so that the organizer molds to the shape of the item. Not necessary, but beneficial. If I were you I would do an internet search and find an example of the type you are trying to make. Post a photo and we can make specific recommendations on how to best configure it. Know that some leathers don't play nice with certain metals. It is because of the type of tanning. I believe vegetable tanned leathers are going to be safest. They also can be molded, stamped, carved, etc. Welcome to the forum and good luck.
  16. No, I saw it on etsy. I really like it too.
  17. Any "tool belt", and I consider a belt that will support fireatms a tool belt, should be lined in my opinion. Two layers of 7-9 oz. is about right. Otherwise the belt won't hold up to rigorous use.
  18. I cringe when I read questions that contain the word best. I think best varies based upon the person and the product in this case. I would add one more option to the list. I know I have often longed for a pony with wider jaws, like this... Have you considered making your own until you decide what you need? Do you have the skills? A lot of us made our own and liked the results. If you plunk down $100 or more only to find it doesn't suit, that would be a shame. Of the two you listed, they are remarkably similar. Go with the best deal. Both are decent.
  19. Thanks for sharing this! Part of the problem with outbreaks of viruses is the initial information not being correct. When this became an issue and we all began talking about it, there was a lot of speculation mixed in with fact. We now know the virus can survive much longer than it was first thought. So I think it is prudent to take appropriate cautions. No need to get stupid about it, like the folks refusing to purchase Corona beer (true story!), but a sensible approach is a good idea. My oldest daughter is a school teacher and the other day they had at least 70 children and about a dozen staff members out with influenza. The custodians did a "deep disinfecting" of the entire building during the night. The chemicals are apparently so strong they cannot do it when the building is occupied. The fact that they take action like that pleases me. They take it seriously and take reasonable action.
  20. Thanks for sharing your experience. So in the end, it sounds like it was beneficial to you. I'm sure like anything there are hits and misses even on Kickstarter.
  21. I have a question for the group. I hope all are checking back on this thread. Has anyone here either done a Kickstarter project or know someone who has? I've seen some very impressive products/projects that were listed on Kickstarter. I just did a quick search and found one that was a small briefcase and they got enough funding within 6 hours to commence the project! Certainly something like this would "kick start" any company. So would this be an option for the poster?
  22. Rosewood Leather, both of the people that responded to your query are top notch. I'd put great stock in what they have to say. They are very generous in their willingness to help. I wish you good luck!
  23. Make sure you are keeping the awl perfectly perpendicular to the leather and following the slant of the pricking iron. Do you know what brand of iron you are using? Comparing front to back, there might be some variations. Take a close look and see what you think. Hold a straight edge to the slits and judge whether they are in a straight line and observe the angles.
  24. Springfield Leather Company used to sell some really cheap leather sides. I believe they are about $30.00 or so. I got some that was really good a few years ago. Like any "special deals" the selection is limited. I'm not sure they have any at this time but you could contact them.
