  1. Helps to show pictures of what you are working with. Size of holes might make a difference on the recommendation. Photos don't have to be studio quality. If you have a tablet or iPad, just snap a pic and attach to a post.
  2. That's a nice middle ground. A crease compresses but does not weaken the leather and yet allows the thread to sit down a bit. I agree with Nigel but don't get dogmatic about it. If you groove and are happy with the results, then keep on groovin'.
  3. Nice job and I second Bikermutt's comment about your logo. Did you design it yourself? If you did, you nailed it. Folks, I just went to this lady's website and am completely blown away. I don't think there is much she cannot do. Photography, glasswork, leather, fabric, you name it. Wow. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
  4. I typically use black with burgundy. Really depends on whether you want your stitching to stand out or not. Really good stitching benefits from contrast but if it isn't so good it looks horrible IMHO.
  5. Never had this happen, but I doubt the stitching played a huge role in the failure. I made a purse for my teenage daughter and the zipper held up two years. That is daily use and not-so-gentle tugging. You can use velcro as a closure, flaps and snaps, Sam Browne studs or even magnetic closures. Lots of options.
  6. US only, but they have what you want. https://www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/cut_to_size_plastic/styrene_high_impact/560 This one you'd have to cut into strips. http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=22883
  7. Very cool indeed! Yes, more pictures please. Very interesting closure. Would like more info on that.
  8. And these look more similar to the one you had...
  9. I've heard good things about these ones. I'm wondering if the one you showed would ultimately be too big, but maybe not. There are similar pens available, just google refillable pen or such.
  10. Just google biker whip and you can learn the history. It is often called a "get back".
  11. Question. Did your laser make the stitching holes? There is a lot to be proud of there. I agree with your comments regarding areas of improvement, but don't neglect the good stuff and there is a lot of good.
  12. For a simple, single gusset I make sure it is a little longer than necessary to begin. I then use my chisel to pre-punch holes on both sides of the gusset, lapping one tooth over the edge for judging spacing. I do the same on the front and back panels. I typically put a needle through the first holes temporarily and then use small binder clips down the edges. I then stitch all around to the other side and then trim off the excess gusset. Works good for me, is quick and saves glue mess. Keep in mind I typically max out at 5-6 oz. leather on my bags, so flexibility isn't a huge issue.
  13. Amen! Happy Easter to you and yours.
  14. Yep, line it. I'd use soft suede on the interior. Good oil tanned leather will sometimes show little beads of oil when you flex it. Not the greatest on all items, but boy is it water-resistant!
  15. I dig the darker one but love the interior of the first one. Cool stuff.
  16. That strap is a nice touch! Great color too. Next time show us the inside too please. Did you put any pockets or pen loops inside?

    Wallet Liners

Springfield's wallet interiors are pretty nice.
  18. 6 spi is too few for wallets IMHO. I'd shoot for 8.
  19. If I had the ability and the tools, I would attempt a set like these. I would go for 8 to 9 spi for wallets and keep the width of the tines on the small side. You will notice they don't taper. They are meant to penetrate through the leather. These are diamond shaped, but don't need to be. They could be more like slits, but keep in mind they have to be strong enough to work properly. Bikermutt is right when he talks about filing. Polishing is also important so that you can get the chisel back out after punching. Wax helps but is no replacement for a properly prepared tool. I would do a 2 prong, 4 prong and 8 prong. 2 prong is sufficient to go around corners. 8 prong is great for long, straight runs (could get by with 6 probably) and 4 prong is helpful for going crosswise on straps, etc. where the 8 is too wide. Learned that through experience unfortunately.
  20. You can probably borrow some and take the measurements you need. Trouble is you kind of need experience with them in order to make a decision on what to make. Otherwise you have to trust the opinion of others or just take a chance. Do you want a true pricking iron that is intended mainly to mark holes, not to punch them? Or a stitching chisel? What shape holes, slits or diamond? Mainly you need to figure out stitches per inch and that need tends to vary depending on the article.
  21. Buckleguy.com also sells them and in multiple finishes, not just brass.
