Colby & Terrymac Go to the front of the forum (main page); look up the free Paul Bennett instruction. He (in my opinion) is a great instructor. He has several lessons on beveling that could answer your question, plus he talk about the use other tools. The best thing is he uses photographs, good ones! Good luck If it can be work around everyone schedule, we can meet sometime. We can talk.

okay....I got his Floral Carving video. Good luck.

For some reason, my BK make a loud ping when it is struck. They have always been that way and trying to tool in the cloak of darkness (since my work area is in the master bedroom) is kinda hard to keep the nose down. So I made sure I used those gaskets. I am getting replace the two current BK with something else (unknown yet) and it somewhat of a heartache after BearMan made such beautiful handles for it, but that ping does not work well in a large room. Now, this maul, is quite, man no matter hard hard I hit it.....it is quiet. As for the plastic, I would suggest you PM Big Papa Leather for a direct answer. Depending on what I get for my BK's it might bring me close to buying one of BearMan person mauls. Alright you all I'm gone.

Here is one that Big Papa Leather help me out with. The wood came from Woodcraft and profiled down without a lathe. The poly came from a plastics company. Bolt from Lowe's. Rubbergaskets came from Home Depot (in 6x6" sheet in plumbing section cut into circles). I pretty much put a gasket where any thing met that was not like substance. It came out really nice and quiet. Good luck.

Yes, you can use a lined pear shader and with some practice, you can make it look good. I have BK flower shaders only because when I started Chan Geer recommended them. I have used a pear shader, camo and veiner to get whatever effect I think I need. Now remember I said "I think I need?" Disclaimer provided. I posted some pictures to show 3 different projects with 3 different shader options. Good luck

Funny you ask. I am in the beginning works with CitizenKate on a project that will hopefully help most of us that do not have regular places to learn and tool. So please be patience. I have tools and I am willing to travel to tool anywhere! As long as I can afford it. Unfortunately, I can do one of two things right now. I can either come up to your end or you can come down to mine. I live between Georgetown and Austin right off IH35. When I wanna tool and get away from the kids, I will drive into Tandy Leather Factory in Austin. I have a couple that live in Taylor that want me to come and teach them a Basic Western Floral Carving class in the immediate future at their home. I am doing it because they are very good friends of mine. Normally, participants have to come into Austin to take this course. I have been looking into a place to teach/hold course for quite some time. I found a place just north of Georgetown who is willing to rent me some space, but that take $$ as with everything. I am not aware of any places north of me that you could go to. The only other place that I could suggest to you would be Hide Crafters on Saturdays in Fort Worth, but that is still a days ride on a horse from you. You are more than welcome to join me and the OFC (Ole' Farts Club) to beat on some leather and pray that it turns out decent, but I just don't see it economical for you? Let me know, my door is always open to other members on LW. Good luck.

Live within your means, artistical skills and remember to thanks those who have loaned you a hand as you progressed up your artistical ladder. In order words don't forget those you have passed up as you build on your skills and you will be able to sleep at night. There will always be those who will make every attempt to ruin what others have. And, there will always those who will not share what they have learned or know with anyone! For whatever reason, it is their choice. We must accept it even though we may not understand it. JBird: I admire your choice to move into your skill full time. Your truly a cowboy at heart; rough, but always smooth! Glad to call you a friend. I'm done, but thanks for allowing me to chime in.

Holy moly, those are some fish.....I wonder how long the fight was to bring them in. Hell, I alway lose those darn 5lb-ders....Good work.

I found the same problem. There are several solutions for you that have worked for me. One, there is hole punch for chrome tan that Tandy sells. Also, C.S. Osborne sells a tool called a "glove" chisel. I have one, but never knew what it was for. I just saw an ad at Zacks-White Leather for this tool. They are an ad sponor on leather work. See banners above. PM if you are interested in the one I have. I doubt that I will never use it. Finally, I took the damn chrome tan to the better half and asked her to sew it. Surprisingly it sew easily with a general sewing machine and needle. BTW, my project was a weight bag for my granite station. Good luck.

I was just going to mention Neves, but it appears that he chimed in. Good luck.

Which Jeremiah? the carving or saddle making?

You can pretty much make them any size/shape you want. I made a few straps for my kids and their friends for 'guitar hero' game. They were all fixed size/length. I really did not like the way the Tandy kit looked and worked. Now, I have seen some with nice western buckles in use for adjustment capabilities, which I thought was pretty cool looking, but never tried it. I've got to make another guitar hero strap for a friend of one of my kids. Good luck.

A couple of things. It would best if you posted your problem with pictures on here, but I will take a swig at it. My general use blade is a 3/8" ceramic knife, but I also own a Leather Wrangler 1/4" blade and a Chuck Smith 1/4" blade. I would suggest that you practice, practice, practice with that swivel knife. Attached, are my tap offs (patterns) that I use to practice before my projects and in between leather craft projects since I do not do this everyday. Yea, I know it sucks. Anyways, I would work on these patterns for while and you will see your success increase. If you are like my kids and don't want to do this, try this. Tilt your blade back a bit more as you cut around the flower/leaves. see how this works. As for the beveler, for a while I just tilted my beveler a bit in the direction that I was beveling. If you tilt the bevel backwards (or oppostie direction you are going) then you will get bevel tracks left in your wake. Just try what I just told you out a bit. Testing is best practice; along with practicing. Again, without know what you own, tools you tried or pictures of your flowers, I can only speculate. Almost every tool maker makes smaller belevers. I mean Barry King now makes a 00 beveler, which I own, but hardly use since I was able to figure out what my current tools could do for me. As always, good luck!

Let me check when I get home and see if I have a pattern for you. Did you google the image you are looking for? Might be an idea until someone else get back to you. You also have the option to conduct a search by looking at the top right corner and type in what you are looking for. One or two words always works for me. "pommel bag" or "pommel pattern" or "saddle bag." Good luck.

No leather work for 6 to 8 months. sniff sniff
King's X replied to leatherman1457's topic in All About Us and Off Topic
Had both shoulder completedly reconstructed with minimal invasion in '05-'06. Recovered from both and now my nerves kill me, but as for the pain, I am much better since the surgery. The first shoulder was not done for 8 months and the second one did happen to get fix until a year after the first one. My was work related and I ended up suing the company and won 13 months later.....seemed like forever! All said and done, I was no longer able to play golf, but I was able to find my way to leather work. It was a blessing in some form. And, yes, drinking a cold one is rehab. Don't listen to them. You are going through the motions to keep flexiability in your joints and tendons. Also, flipping the bird up really high in the air while alternating arms is also rehab. Don't worry, you will think of some more. Best of luck and have a quick recovery! -
