  1. What a great way to start the day . So, as its was in the morning, does that mean it will rain soon? ' Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning' HS
  2. Yeh , these birds love going under our eaves looking for a feed, heaps of bugs under them . I put some water out, my Dad was getting concerned as its quite hot here now, so I (carefully) put a few bowls of water out for our guests . What happened next was a little strange, one of the birds, Dad I guess, did a ' twirly' little dance (?) mid flight as I was pouring the water, and then immediately had a drink after I was at a distance, must have been thirsty . ' Mum' has been in the nest pretty much the whole time , occasionally leaving the nest. They're more entertaining than TV HS
  3. I forgot to mention that these tiny birds hate crows. There were a couple in our paddock just now, and ooooo'h boy !! these few crows were immediately under attack , not just by 'Dad' but from a few other Willy's in the area ...needless to say the crows flew away real quick , quite a sight to watch . These tiny birds don't take any sh**t. They even fight against other predators mid flight. HS
  4. A Beef Stroganoff springs to mind HS
  5. I use my stitching (spacer) wheel to mark where the holes go, after stitching , I run the stitching wheel over the finished stitching on both sides . I think I got that idea from Al Stohlman . HS
  6. I just use scraps of (trimmed) sheep skin cut into about 2-3" squares, for NF oil, dyes, and sealers etc.. A few fibres are not that much of an issue, they come right off. The NF oil that I have is a bit thick, so, I just thin it out with a little bit of metho , works fine Theres no way I'll be heating it up , too dangerous . HS
  7. Mother Nature at Her very best again. We have a bird nesting in one of our rose bushes right outside our family room window, Dad spotted her, flying back and forth making a nest . The bird is commonly known here as a ' Willy Wag Tail', by name and nature, because of their long tail at the back and because of the way they move about . The pic is a sample pic, pretty much the same outside our window, I wouldn't dare try take a pic of our guest myself as ' Dad' is very defensive . The nest is about the size of a small cup . The size of the bird is a bit bigger than the palm of your hand , not very big , but they are very territorial . I tried to get a closer look the other day , but ' Dad' got really p*ssed off. I now know their ' defensive' chirps and their 'happy'(?) chirps. HS
  8. Thats a beautiful example of a shield. I have a set of craft knives, just a cheapie set I got from a hardware, but it has several ( razor sharp) blades in different shapes etc. , ideal for doing just that. My beveling is good, but not that good . HS
  9. We used to use a ' hot box' ( 4 reinforced foam panels with a roof and a few heat lamps) to keep our Gelcoats warm when making F/G swimming pools, otherwise they won't go through the spray guns . We also kept our waxes for the molds in there too . HS
  10. That is so unique and well made Brass fittings rock Don't be surprised if she gets asked " where can I get one ? " You may end up with a few orders. HS
  11. Like a line from a movie , " thats not basket weave......THIS is basket weave" . You must have had a lot of patience to do that @Frodo, I would have thrown it across my workshop , LOL , well done HS
  12. This has been discussed quite a bit, but heres a few pics of the leather I get from my supplier in Perth, WA . I bought 4 of these recently. Torino 4mm D/B . I sometimes get shoulders. I use these for my belts . The only marking is a branding mark , ' JW or WJ ' .( I keep those in) , and a batch number right at the very edge , and thats it. I buy around 8-10 of these per year , depending on sales & demand. I've been with the same supplier for many years, I phone ahead being so far away , I tell them what I need. I don't even have to inspect the hides these days like I use to , they were all rolled up and packaged on the bench ready for me to load into my car. HS (PS: ignore the ' one way ' sign ....that I stole in my ' yoof' )
  13. But I do , a lot , which might explain why I can't get a date A bit of deal breaker don't you think? HS
  14. That looks so neat & tidy, and very smart My belts keep getting longer ( I've lost weight) , time for me to make a new belt for myself. HS
  15. I think it has a lot to do with the pollination . Flowering Almonds only produce flowers, like ours have done since we've had it. But now, nuts have appeared . Thank you Mother Nature Look forward to eating some fresh Almonds now Our Christmas will be different this year. I've got some Turkey drumsticks for Christmas Day for me and Dad, with a small ham etc. cook em slow in the oven, and Turkey wings & salad for Boxing Day , and a Christmas pudding, of course . Our climates are complete opposites , thats why I so love the changing of the seasons on both sides of the planet . Awesome pics too HS
  16. Howdy doody friend from a very hot Western Australia Harvesters across the district have been busy before a harvest ban is in place , its been that hot. Not long ago that I was talking about the cooler weather, remember that? . My deepest respect to Mother Nature What do you know about Almond trees? ( we pronounce it ' Armond' delete the ' L' ,, like I said, us Aussies are weird, lol ) Anyway, we have a Flowering Almond tree in the back garden, only around 6-7 ' tall, and in all the 10-15 years we've had it, its only ever produced really nice pink flowers and thats it. Almonds are very heat and drought tolerant here in Oz thats why Mum got it . However , this year I have noticed ( just this arvo) that its started to produce Almond nuts . According some research, for a flowering Almond to produce( fruit) nuts, it needs to be ' cross pollinated' , and some varieties are ' self pollinating (wha..?) ' and they also rely heavily on our best friends the bees for pollination . Ever heard of flowering Almond trees producing nuts? This tree has changed , not complaining, I love Almonds, so hopefully by Christmas or the New Year I'll have Almonds to eat So I'm guessing Mother Nature has done me a favor . I'll keep searching HS
  17. I have never used linen thread, but thats is something new I have learnt today HS
  18. Man, they are so nicely done That will bring joy to those that receive them HS
  19. Thats a massive difference in price @Frodo , good thinking . The closest I've got is making a wood mold from a tracing of an actual original . However, if I went into a bank with that, I'd be arrested, LOL . Might come in handy at the meat section at the local supermarket though , the price of meat has gone stupid !! HS
  20. Yeh man, I have 4 machines all up, , including " Brutus" my 441 clone . I get all my threads needles etc. from ' Sewing Machines Australia', they are in QLD , on line, but you can chat and order with them over the phone , and they are quite helpful . Not too many industrial machine suppliers in Perth, and what is available in Perth are not as good and not as helpful ,according to those that have tried ' other' suppliers. HS
  21. Mmmmmnah! Neither would I TBH . I had to remake some "leather" belts that were marketed and sold by a large Oz company as ' vegan leather' , needless to say they fell apart , and the majority of the material was synthetic . The customer wanted me to reuse the twin prong buckles . I remade them with actual leather . Customer was happy . There is a company in the lower south of West Oz that specialises in fish skin leather, damn fine products too , long lasting and durable . I also have some fish skin leather in my collection of 'stuff'. I've always had a saying , if it breeds and bleeds you can turn it into leather Man, thats just beautiful, so serene *sigh* HS
  22. If you're uncertain about the belts, perhaps they can be replaced with the proper belts , as it sounds like they were replaced at some point (?) , I have to wonder why if that is the case. Otherwise, if everything is moving freely and the hook is working fine , they may be worth getting, just a good clean and service and some TLC. Good luck in whatever you decide HS
  23. Likewise. They paid a fortune on feed , but rarely spent time with them . Puzzled by that. Perhaps people get a horse because they have ' grandiose' ideas of riding, or breeding them and later lose interest, who knows, ...dunno. My apologies to @Teddyi for hijacking her thread HS
  24. Also , if you need to case (dampen) the leather, the water may not soak in , depending on how it was treated or if it has a sealer on top. HS
  25. G'Day, welcome I'm from WA as well, Central Wheatbelt. That machine looks like it just needs some TLC . HS
