Question regarding leather conditioner.
cowboycolonel replied to Danne's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
There is no need to look any further than Skidmore's for a conditioner. I'd write a testimonial, but once you use it. you'll love it. I buy it by th ecase, use it by the gallon, and give it away with every new saddle purchase. -
Ross, With all the smoke and ash in the air, it's really bad breathing outside, and as I said earlier, my computer is in the barn. So I'll be back when the air clears a bit. Right now it's like snow falling, except that it's ash, and the smoke is so thick and pervasive that we all have to wear masks to even be outside. Look like a bunch from Shanghai. Not pleasant nor healthy. I'll be branding calves on Friday ( 200 miles away and out of the smoke pattern, so I have to get my gear ready, or I wouldn't be out here even this morning. There Are Some Good Tandy People Out There!
cowboycolonel replied to Sheilajeanne's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
There's a reason they're still up and operating at so many locations. I, for one, am NOT a detractor of Tandy - especially the staff. Thanks for bringing up the matter. -
Best kept secret in the business is the guys that cut headstones. They give you about anything you want. Their aching to get rid of their remnants. Give it a try.

Thought I was shut down, as my computer told me I weas not connected to the internet. It must've done an auto-re-start, so I find I was no longer invisible but not awake. Sorry for the mis-representation.

Has anyone tried Un-doing saddle stitching?
cowboycolonel replied to KingsCountyLeather's topic in Sewing Leather
Speaking of which ... If you haven't discovered liquid bandage, this is the time. Although I do not recommend practicing this art, you can apply this stuff ( which is essentially super glue for skin) and get right back to work with a lot less pain, as the cut is not exposed to air, and no more bleeding on your project. I've had it used (by a surgeon) on my face and hands, and I've used it on my fingers so many times I can't recall. I keep a bottle in my shop, in my truck, shaving kit, saddle bags, and medicine cabinet. Available at about any drug store. you can thank me later. -

I try not to have to separate the layers, but sometimes you just have to. I use a standard stitch-ripper on occasion, but they don't last very long if your stitching is tight. X-acto knife with number 11 blade seems to be the solution -- for me anyway. -

Yep. Do it all the time. If you want a good-looking job you have to be willing to do it from time. Just work from the off-side so tool marks don't show. Back up to where it is presentable and go back three more stitches, Then use whatever splicing method you are comfortable with and make it right. No need to separate the leathers as long as they were aligned while you were doing the original stitching. The Colonel -
Called the number -- It was a fax line. Is that your stuff?

I know there's someone out there that can make me a clicker die reasonably priced and reasonably soon. Just need a four-inch circle. Anybody?

Who do I go to to getr a clicker die made? Should be relatively simple - just a four-inch circle.

Get a board, drill some hol;es evenly spaced, and stich a dowel into it. Hang the cone on the dowel and you're done. Won't cost as much as it would to ship on from the next town, assuming you have a drill.

Okay Shalako, WHAT, (exactly) is 32 inches long? The barrel? The overall Length? For reference, my 1894 (30 WCF) has a 20" barrel and is 38", butt-plate to muzzle. Seems to me that 32" is a damn long barrel for an 1876, especially in such a heavy caliber.

House shoes for mom
cowboycolonel replied to battlemunky's topic in Shoes, Boots, Sandals and Moccassins
much better than the macaroni necklace, I'd say. Those things are very expensive when you buy them for real, so you made money while learning. I took a pair of Uggs that the dog got ahold of and just rolled the tops down and glued and stitched them into slippers kind of like these, They'll make your feet sweat for certain. -
Weaver has something close, but I don't think exact matchers. Might start there though.

Guess my first question would be why you can't get the weapon... distance is one thing, but if he wants it and is close, then we can solve that problem. I have a pattern you can work from, but if you got the Will Ghormley pattern from Tandy, then you can do it yourself. The weapon should measure out to 43" overall length if it has a 28 inch barrel. It is not much larger than the 30-30 (30 W.C.F) so if you have that weapon, you can just cut generously (add 3/4" per side) and go from there. You didn't mention how he wants to carry it, so you'll want to know that as well, and whether he wants an end cap. Let me know if I need to send you what I have.

I have photos I will be glad to share, but they are too large to post on this forum. If you will give me an email or another route to use, I will post some to you. I am also working on another "English-style" side saddle right now. Perhaps you are interested in that as well? I am Santa Barbara-ish.
-
While you are at it, contact ROSSR on the forum. He might just have what you need. I have one that's really close, but the bottom edge of mine is flat. BTW, I just finished restoring a 1900 Burkhard side-saddle (Trinidad, CO) and it is now in a local museum. I used the stamp I just mentioned, as I had to replace the stirrup hood (we'd call it a tapadero now) and the fender. I also had to rebuild the upper pommel, as it had been broken because this saddle was on the bottom of a stack of saddles which had been thrown (yep, literally) on top of it for years. Good luck with yours.

Picture of the single-handled one please?

gun belt buckles
cowboycolonel replied to taltexan's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I use center bar buckles as a standard, but for something custom, I use Old CowDogs version of the Tom Mix gun belt buckle. You can have those done to order. I have on for my personal rig that has a Vargas Girl bent over the upper left corner and my personal brand (in Gold relief) poised over her hat. Pretty striking, but not cheap. -
You can make it as stiff as you want, but it all depends on what you want the final result to be. If you want a dress belt that you can hang a holster on, it's one thing. If you want to have a drop rig for quick draw or show, it's entirely another. There is no one correct answer until you define a few other parameters. Are you intending to carry a sub-compact 9 mm inside your waistband or a full sized 9 on your hip? Want to add magazine pouches? I'd love to help you but I've got to know more.
-
Then I'd think a 7 oz firm leather should work if you're going to line it. Probably just a 1 1/2 in straight belt, I'm assuming?
-
Just like everything else, it depends. What do you intend to carry? Where are you intending to carry it. Is it for concealment or open carry. Big (heavy) pistol or belly gun? Give us a bit more to go on so we don't send you down the wrong road.
