Yes, now a days I spend my shop time doing shop maintenance, building that tool holder I put off. Sharpening .... almost everything, anything but producing. Don't really know why....

Have a bleed knot dog leash on order. I'm going to make it out of 2 layers of 3 to 4 oz medium temper leather 6 to 6 1/2 feet long and 1 inch wide. My question is, is it okay to just contact cement the layers together and burnish well , will it last? Or will I have to forgo sleeping and eating to hand stitch it? I plan on using some stitches at junction points for decoration and strength @ the junction points. Any help of advice will be appreciated.

I have and use 5 different kinds of transparent grid rulers all with a 0 point in center. 2 are 2 inches wide, a 24 inch and a 12 inch. 2 are 1 inch wide 12 inch and a 3 inch. And the last is 1 1/2 inch wide and 8 inches long square. Those are my main ones. About 3 to 4 dollars American. https://www.amazon.com/Westcott-12-Inch-Beveled-Transparent-B-70/dp/B001THRMGS/ref=sr_1_3?gclid=Cj0KCQjwt5zsBRD8ARIsAJfI4Bi1tcGsS2RD9TorVDcpMVhbjk5rrOQtFe_xR6_xi8HxnsRbAp8xewYaAvJcEALw_wcB&hvadid=174210550008&hvdev=t&hvlocphy=1024620&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=b&hvrand=7139902621506263621&hvtargid=aud-647006051489%3Akwd-150120118857&hydadcr=24657_9648987&keywords=plastic+grid+ruler&qid=1569149221&s=gateway&sr=8-3 . I also have a cork backed steel one 12 inches, a 24 inch steel ruler and finally a 48 inch ruler for when I really want to get my measuring on.

Brit bike! Triumph man here too. 3rd generation at that. As for the bag... wonderful job, for the first project. Superb work! At least to my untrained eye. -

Ok, let me whip this out and put paid to my part in the mess. I made the same mistake asking for a pattern from someone, anyone. And someone gave me advise on how to make my own. And I appreciated to no end. Now when I want to make something I start with a sketch and work my way to creating my own patterns one or two people have asked me for a copy. Kind of helped me to take this craft more serious and increased my passion, enjoyment and pride. Yes I was helping the guy the same way I was given help. Dose that make me an ass for helping a guy learn to fish? I hope not. True I may not have liked the edge I seemed to hear in the post but there have been a few times when I was given help when didn't deserve it but sorely needed it. On all forums there is a... culture, a way of speaking and interacting. For an outsider or newbie it can take a while to get to know (and I'm sure even after all this time I know I run a foul of the way here.) walking through an interaction may be better than flaming. You know flies, honey and all that. So I'm sorry if I stepped out of line. But nice is kind of my default. -
Ok, now take some measurements... the size of what you want to cover. Add about 1/8 th an inch on 3 sides. Then add about 1/4 to 2/4 of an inch then 2xs the thickness of the leather. That is the general measurements you need. Sit down with your favorite drink and sketch the general idea of what you want. Fit that into the measurements you came up with. After you get that done come on back and we can go from there. Okay?

Depends on how you want to go about it. Wet forming, cutting straight from a pattern ect.? Do you plan to hand sew or have a machine? Laser or stamping design? Dyed from the tannery or hand dyeing, airbrush or dip dye? What hardware do you want to include if any? Laser, clicker press or hand cutting, how do you plan to cut? Give an example in a pic of what you want to do. What tools or any experience if any do you have in leather or any trade or craft? Please help us help you.

When can you call yourself a craftsman?
Grumpymann replied to Handstitched's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Didn't think you were getting on my case, words have connotation and denotation (sp?). And admitting when and where you are wrong is a part of being an adult. I was wrong about what an artisan is. We're cool. Thanks for straightening me out. Love to hear your take! -
