  1. Hi Gary, I have only glanced at this thread and will look in to your site further when i have more time. Going on what ive read so far i would be very interested in adding my craft to your site. As a new leather worker I was looking for some where to advertise my products without going to too much trouble. I’m not really looking to sell huge quantities. Thanks, Ger.
  2. When my son was 3 yo he fell against a door jam and split his forehead, While my son was in my arms, the doctor said he’d glue it with superglue so he wouldn’t have a scar. When he finished glueing the cut... he was talking directly to my son, but my son was a bit shy and lowered his head to my shoulder and stuck his forehead to my jacket! My son is almost 18 yo now and still has a scar on his forehead...
  3. Thanks everyone for the great tips. It’s nice to see that I’m not the only one here making mistakes!
  4. Hi, I was sewing some leather last night, the light wasn’t great and I pulled some stitches a bit too tight. looking at it this morning... I would like to redo it. has anyone ever tried to rip back the stitched and re do it again? Ger.
  5. You are right! But you must allow inexperienced leather workers to make mistakes? When you are new to leather craft, you expect the suppliers of leather to sell you good quality leather... Now,... nearly a year into the craft, I don’t buy anything from Tandy. I now know not to use that piece of leather for anything important again.
  6. Looking good! You shouldn’t leave it so long to work at your leather... Someone once said... “ Stitching is like Gravy, it’s only great if you make it every day” Keep up the good work! Ger.
  7. I’m not very experienced with leather... but I had the same problem with leather I bought from Tandy in the UK. i split it too and it cleaned it only a bit, I think the problem is with the quality of leather and not the finish they applied? i ended up putting tan kote on the back and smoothing it with my bone folder. Some people use a beveledpiece of plate glass. Ger.
  8. Looking good! I like the baseball stitch too... does the leather give good grip? I know vegtan Leather gets very shiny when worn. you can use edge kote on that type of leather to finish the edges.
  9. Thanks again Fire88, I will definitely keep your way of calculating my costs in mind. But for this apron I will take mikesc’s advise and trade it for haircuts and advertising.
  10. Thanks. your way of pricing looks good! Except for my time... lol. I only started leatherworking this year so it takes me a little longer to make stuff than maybe other leather workers... it would be a very expensive apron based on time Lol. Im not realy doing it for the money yet. I just like the challenge of making something with leather.
  11. Wow! Thank you for all your advise, I hadn’t put much thought into the advertising part... The makers mark is on the front waistband and the owner is a friend of mine so she will pass on my details to anyone else. 2 weeks ago, I gave my accountant a Leather legal pad folder as a gift and only today he called me to ask if I’d make another one for a client who had seen it on his desk. Goes to show... your advise is good! Thanks again.
  12. Hi all, i just finished this apron for my local barber shop. The lady owner asked if I would make her a half apron with a pocket. This is my own design and it is made with some soft 2mm calf skin. Some of it is sewn with a sewing machine and some hand sewn. I have no idea how much to charge for it... anyone want to recommend a price? I also could trade haircuts? Anyway... all comments are welcome.
  13. After I used the dye, I did notice that the leather was more stiff than normal... and I oiled it as normal... but the leather didn’t soak up the oil as normal and I did flex the belt to soften it up a bit... that’s when it started to wrinkle a bit.
  14. No, but i wear out a pair every year... My wife just picked up a pair again at the weekend. I must break down the old pair and try to make my own in future. I will look forward to seening where you get the skins from...
  15. I made a leather belt for a hairdresser’s apron this week and the exact same thing happened... I did oil it after dying as always and when the leather started cracking, I oiled it again and again. Still the same. The leather was also from Tandy in the UK. Here’s a pic, it looks like a vintage belt now.
  16. Thanks. I did try to add a second creaser mark on the inside of the thread but I only have a Tandy type one at the moment and its too blunt so it looks like I grooved it. The thread is an 8mm tiger thread and I agree its too chunky. What thread would you recommend?
  17. I purchased a goat skin recently and this is my first attempt at making a wallet with chrome tanned leather. I will keep this wallet for myself, it is a very soft leather and we’ll see how well it wares in my pocket... Any comments and criticism are welcome!
  18. You can buy a special belt keep clamp that fits into a regular stitching clam. Leprevo in Uk sells them but I’m sure someone sells them in the states. I first saw it in a video by uksaddlery. Look at 18:00 for clamp.
  19. Beautiful colour contrast. What size stitching irons did you use? I see you changed sizes for the belts loop?
  20. I have some Elk hides which I suppose are pretty close to Moose hides?? they’re very soft and stretchy. The leather I have was meant for shoes. Beautiful leather though,
