Distressed Holster - & story
WoodysWorkshop replied to Brooks125's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
That looks pretty darn good! The darker ware area's are in just the right spots. Would you care to share your method? Or is it your trade secret? -
I have been using Hi-Lite to slick with. Seams to work out fine for me. I just brush on some shene afterwards. But they do make edge paint, but I've yet to afford it to try.

I'm really new to all of this. I learned some 40+ years ago in middle school. After life changing events I no longer have my wood shop, so I'm taking something up to take up my time that I can do in the apartment here. So it's a learn as I go type thing. As for color bleeding, I don't think that will happen. All the color I used was paint, not dye or stain.. But good questions!

Thanks for the advise. I put the super shene on one side, the neats foot oil on the other. I'm a figurin I put too much oil on and it soaked through to the front side and goed the shene. Lesson learned. And per the link and advice, I used some household alcohol and scrubbed with an old toothbrush and all turned out well. I've got 3 other sheaths in the making, but they are on hold as I've taken them as far as I can. Need to acquire some funds for color to finish. All 3 are for fixed blades. One I made a mold and formed it, one I used spacers, and the last one I did a fold w/spacer on one side. One will laced, one stitched, maybe 2 row stitched (by hand) and the last rivited (maybe stitched too) to work on those processes.

Vacuum forming can be use for so many different things. Me, being a Wood Worker for over 40 years... I prefer the old fashioned way and make a wood form and leave it clamped over night. But if I had one, making laminated curved pieces would be much, much easier...but not less messy...nothing can help that.

I use a cane. The pain from my low spine to my right hip won't let me put much weight on my right leg without falling down. In my case, I think it would suit better as a fanny spanker. I know people frown on spankings these days...but that is what's wrong with today's youth. Being bad in Jr. High got you the wooden paddle with holes drilled in it. An at home I got the belt or Hot Wheels track.

I seen a You Tube video once where a guy drilled a hole in a block of Pine, epoxied in a nail (1/8" I'm guessing) and cut off the head. Mounted in a dremel and ruffed it out round with a rasp files, and worked to a milled files and then to sand paper. Seamed to work. The work you did looks fun to do. Makes me wish I had something laying around to put a motor out of. I'm going to have to try that epoxy the nail in a block thing soon. Anyone think of a reason pine wouldn't be a good wood? I might have a small chunk of maple or oak some wheres left over from my wood shop....when I had it.

Just that.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy a cheap pair of heals somewhere and cut off the top and try sewing to what's left.

I have a bunch of American Wildlife Knives that only has a scene on one side. The handle on the other side is recessed for an insert. I was thinking I could cut pieces of leather and stamp names per order for the knives for custom work along with my sharpening service. I've tried to make a template and cut them out individually, but it takes way too long. I was thinking if someone could make a die that would fit the recessed area with a handle similar to large round holes punches, or belt end punches used with a mallet it sure would be nice. Of coarse, price would be a factor. Handle wouldn't be absolutely necessary. The basic size is only 3/4" by 2-3/4" and would be used on veggie tanned leather of 2-4 oz. Pictures upon request. I could send one of the knives to make the die for, and probably would be the best way. Anyone know of someone that wouldn't charge an arm and a leg, or could maybe make it? Thank You Kindly, John

You are proud, and should be. Even an LED light on the sewing machine...sweet! I am very jealous.

Mares leg saddle ring hook
WoodysWorkshop replied to dakotawolf's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I don't know where you would get the hook, but I don't know if I would want it hanging by the ring. I think it would wobble too much. What caliber of Henry is this for btw? Oh, And Steve McQueen's was suppose to be a 45-70. But on the TV show, it definitely DID NOT kick like one. -
Long over due Idea
WoodysWorkshop replied to Treed's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I like it! I would use it myself. I would buy a pair of Uberti Matched Pair Cody's, or Engraved Cody's for the holsters. Or if I were even richer, I'd buy a pair of Magnum Research's 45-70's. Did I tell everyone I'm a huge fan of the 45-70? -
How to make a press for moulding leather pouches and such
WoodysWorkshop replied to RockyAussie's topic in How Do I Do That?
I will 2nd the bearing press. If you have mig welder, or a buddy that does...possibilities are nearly endless and economical. If you look into a good wood working vise which would fin the range of your first picture, you will find out they are more than the HF bearing press. And that is just the frame and threads...and you build to suite you. And not as strong as a bearing press. If you invest in some clamps, you can clamp the 1/2's together once pressed. The molds I've made so far I did with my dremel and used Bessy Mite-y-Mini 6" clamps I kept from my wood shop to clamp them together and hold over night.- 74 replies

Singer 45k1 Restoration Decals
WoodysWorkshop replied to Parfektionisto's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I wouldn't have not thought in a million years that decals were that old. This has really changed my few on things tremendously. I wish I still had that old sewing machine. I looked it up and they were so mass produced that they literally had no collectors value. I took a $10 offer from a guy for cabinet and all. But it had no belt, long deteriorated, and the only foot for it was on it. I have no idea what had happened to all the feet and other stuff that must have went with at one time. That was back in Jan. 2014. -
I received your PM, Thank You Kindly. You are very kind.

Singer 45k1 Restoration Decals
WoodysWorkshop replied to Parfektionisto's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I would not be surprised if those old decals were not stencil and hand painted. We use to have an old Singer peddle machine and cabinet in the basement the correctives on it seamed to be painted on, not decals. From the literature I found in the drawers, it was probably from the 1940's or early 50's. But I suspect early post WWII when my parents were married and set up house. My mother use to do a lot of sewing. But I don't remember ever seeing her use that old Singer, just new electric Singers. -
Try mounting your burnisher in a vise if you have one. Then you can move the leather back and forth over the burnisher. I have one of the Tandy plastic creasers with a half round burnisher on the end. Works for me.

That looks darn uncomfortable the way it is. Looks like it's attached to a round base. Did you Milk Can? Not Milk Crate? I would sew loop around the whole thing and put a draw string in the back. I think that would be the easiest way. But I'm no expert. I would use lot of HD foam padding a layer or two of sheep hide with wool on it too. Dang, that look uncomfortable.

That's very cool! How and the world did you do that? She actually likes to bark which scares the heck out of people. But she's just letting us know someone is around with a wagging nubbin.

Need Coin Purse Clasp/Closure
WoodysWorkshop replied to WoodysWorkshop's topic in Hardware and Accessories
Thanks, I would have never guest that name. At least I have something to search for now. -
I have been mugged before, so I carry all my money in a coin purse. I usually buy them on Ebay, and are pretty cheap. The problem is they are all fake leather or some sort of flexible plastic and they rip out quick. So I would like to make one out of good leather and reinforce it where they rip out. But I don't know what the closure/clasp is called and searches hasn't helped me much. It's a pinch frame that closes on the leather sides of the opening with an arm with a ball at the end and to close it you bring them together and balls keep it from opening. I'd like to get a frame that not just pinches on the leather, but can sew it on. If it's wide enough, I could drill the holes myself. I've tried several times on the ripped out ones to salvage the frame but they are so cheap they just bend up beyond trying to use them again. Does anyone know what they are called, or know of a supplier that offer these? Someone must make these some where. Here's a link to an Ebay for a picture of what I mean. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Women-Casual-Leather-Wallet-Key-Holder-Case-Clutch-Change-Coin-Mini-Purse-Bags/322367293569?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=511296814295&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

Very Beautiful indeed. I am jealous...Seriously

That is awesome!!! I'm next in line...must post pics of man's best friend in full attire! And, what size is the dog...in lbs? Do you have a pattern for it to share? I have a 15lb JRT, but I've never had luck with harness. They rub between the legs and chest and make them raw. Probably my fault for wrong sizing or not adjusted properly. My Tasha is a special kinda buddy to me, I'd like to make something special for her.
