Lets talk about sales (or lack thereof)
chrisash replied to Spyros's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Whilst I was browsing this morning I came across a post of some leather dogs collars tooled with animals and lined with a nice green lining, now the general market for such will be tiny and a hard sell to most of us after all they soon get dirty , greasy and look worn, but I assume a few dog or pet owners showing their dogs at dog shows would pay the earth for a dog collar that really stood out, with quite a good size market for them.. many hobbyists will make their plain wallet and advertise with thousand's of others on Esty or similar sites and expect to make sales with no effort and no real marketing You need a niche market you can exploit to the full rather than compete with thousands of other hopeful's selling the same basic items, make something different that stands out. there are millions of artists in this world few ever sell their goods at a profit that recovers the hours invested in the painting or drawing, same with writer's and many other hobbies -

How many of the population would go to work each and every day if they just did what they wanted to do I only make what I want to make appears to be a luxury most cannot afford If you want to sell something , then make what the customer wants at the price they want to pay, or talk them into a reason to buy -
Howdo you tell if it chrome tanned or oil tanned
chrisash replied to Bert03241's topic in All About Leather
Do you mean either veg tan or chrome tan, chrome tan is generally used in clothing and leather bags etc and under 2mm thick though it can be thicker but hard to find, often has a blueish stripe down the centre of the leather Veg tan comes in all thickness and more often used by leatherworkers, if you cut a small part and immerse in water and then shape it, when it dries it will retain the shape and be very hard -

In Europe at least we live in a throw away society where things are valued in days rather than years (not everything but many items) Leatherworker tend to slag off the far east items as crap, but in fact they never look at how well they are made, (mass production and good quality control in general) but designed for they throw away society Hobby people feel that because they spend time making one offs they should sell at a better price, but does the main buyers know the difference and unfortunately many examples shown on forums are quite low quality. Those who are successful end to be the ones who spend money on marketing their goods, which is not the same a page on Etsy or Facebook Many skilled workers can make items as good as Hermes or LV or any big brand, but the potential customers are sold on the brand which costs a lot of time and effort yet alone money to build -

In many if not all cases you can just disconnect or remove the electronic parts and run as a basic machine, I guess it depends on the way the electronic controls are incorporated into the specific machine. If you are lucky there might be circuit diagrams so someone could fault find, though that seems a dying profession these days where they just board change electronics rather than repair

We should all stop buying from McDonalds as they are one of the few western countries to value keeping their shops open in Russia rather than supporting Ukraine in their fight for freedom. most other companies have pulled out of Russia

In the UK you can get colour matched rattle tins made by taking in a sample colour -
Just add a good conditioner to the leather before any sealer, only use NFO sparingly if the leather is really really dry before you do anything to the leather i.s. before you start and leave for 48 hours to soak in

I would suggest going to a few stables around your area and asking the manager about what he/she wants and expects. really they need to be cleaned prior to any work and that is limited to the surface, sweat does go dep so i was told when i enquired about it and owners unwilling to spend much on repairs A Google search shows the new costs of some blankets which can be surprisingly low

Prefer the old settings with the full page of topic which was very easy to see bits of interest, now it has been shortened for upcoming events which might be better in a menu bar or under Calendar

Sharpening a Japanese type skiving knife with DMT Whetstone
chrisash replied to BMH's topic in Sharpen it!
Have you tried using a dark sharpie to mark the cutting edge so that when you have done a coupe of strokes you can see where the ink has been removed, so you can learn to get a even sharped across the whole of the cutting edge Plenty of video's on YouTube that may help -
