  1. That's interesting info for sure friend thank you, we went from the rawhide chews to these gristle chew things made from the lower back leg tendon. Problem is they are about $4.00 a pop and my bully's can eat one in an hour lol. I was going to tryr one or a few for making mallets but just haven't got around to it. On your sheaths how do you water proof them so they don't get soft in the field? I knew Native Americans used rawhide for making boxes and such.
  2. First thank you for the nice compliments. Oh heck yea along with your Coleman lanterns and stoves, I've got a few myself and use them, converted one to kerosene last year.
  3. so do you spray your finishes also? My problem with super sheen is that it picks up alot of dye when i brush it on and leaves streaks would spraying it on be better? On this piece it removed and streaked the bison brown then sealed up the whole mess lol. I mixed a bit of sheen with some of the dye and it sprayed well and helped cover some of the problem but puddled easily. Also wondering would the leather being damp help the dye bind better before drying i still feel alot of the dye dries before it soaks into the leather.
  4. lol yes and my dogs would in a heart beat thank you
  5. Made this/these for my daughters birthday, she loves to draw. I turned the pencils also. The sunburst went south on me when i added the super sheen, it took alot of the dark color off and made streaks. My attempt to fix it by spraying a mixture of super sheen and bison brown dye helped some by covering the worst of the streaks and allows me to say its a custom finish lol if you try this as a fix be aware its puddles as you can see. Not perfect by any means. Some pig skin for the liner.

  9. Thanks to you ! I appreciate your help i would have done a lot of trial and error before trying to turn down the pressure.
  10. thank you yea the only thing i did wrong i think was to spray the yellow out to far so it turned all the red i put down afterward to orange but it is certainly livable and a learning experience. I may try some antique along the tooling that is a good idea.
  11. seems my problem is solved much thanks, that is eco flo yellow, red, and bison brown there are a few blems on the leather but the spray came out great now just need more practice.
  12. getting ready to try it in a few minutes Thank you !
  13. I might copy your portfolio if ok, i have a few daughters that sketch constantly lol, they take their work everywhere. Did you make it to fit a certain type of insert or just a certain size of off the shelf notebook?
  14. yes i have a paasche vlst i was running it about 25 - 30 psi with the smallest needle and tip if i remember right. I have done a bit of painting with it also to further my control skills with the button. I'll have to try your suggestions on my next project

  18. My first try didn't go so well either, seemed to me that the overspray of the dark was getting onto the middle portion and darkening that also. I haven't had time to do much more experimentation so am gonna follow this closely. Thanks to all for their two cents.
  19. sit down with a ruler a compass and a square and make some patterns on heavy paper. Then cut yourself some templates out of leather , wood or plastic.
  20. thats one nice anvil did you make it? I made one from a piece of rr track doesn't look that nice lol.
  21. The different styles were/are developed by the different artists just like painting, then as they become popular their style gets copied. A lot of it is the business side too on the more modern styles at least and probably why you thought it started in the 40s, Stohlman for example started about that time and as he got better he started to produce tools and books and made it a business which promoted his style further. It makes it troublesome to some degree as the tools we can buy were created to do a certain style well but we as artists/humans also want to develop our own style as we get better so we either have to make do, learn to use them differently or develop tools we need ourselves. At least that's my take on it. Leather carving IMO is influenced by centuries old traditional methods, folk art/ untrained leather workers embellishing personal items, professional artists/people making a living at it and every thing in between.
  22. save the hardware at least, even if its rusty you can throw it in some vinegar and clean it up to reuse.
