  1. i agree but i also think its more ignorance than misconception, folks don't know they can get shoes repaired because there is no one who repairs them anymore the shoe repair store in our town died way back in the 70s. We turned into a throw away culture about then too so even though leather will outlast the soles its a mute point no one fixes them they go in the dump. We are simply taught now days to throw and buy as a culture that's what we do. At least in the US! Now my dad took care of his shoes, cleaned and polished them, wore over boots in the winter but as a child he got one pair a year for school, then ww2 and the army gave him his first real shoes he could wear anytime he wanted and lessons on how to take care of them. He never owned more than a couple pairs at one time in his life. His pride and joy were a pair of boots my brother had made for him in the Azores in the 70s.
  2. i spend an hour or so waterproofing my boots every fall. My hunting boots are over 20 years old now and the leather is still holding up. the worst "myth" right now about leather is cow farts are destroying the world.
  3. ok this fits the s&w 8 shot 22 cal revolver it should be pretty close , you may have to adjust it a bit. not much to it. s&w8shot (1).pdf
  4. i will be glad to scan it for you if you have a printer you can just print it, i'm old fashioned i guess.
  5. i cant find that picture but its just like this one. i re did this holster for the same man, he wanted one that rode higher than the old fashioned western type and wanted a cant to it so this is what i came up with, The strap is sewn under the top of the loop kind of like a welt, it is shaped like the stitching at the base and keeps the cant where it should be. they ride high and tight.
  6. i really like nice people too. Makes life so much fun no matter where you are!!! May god bless them all. next time your there go straight in and tell the boss, nothing says thanks as much as taking the same time for them.
  7. i have this pattern its a pretty basic holster
  8. where will you carry it and why? That will help pick you rig. is your state a concealed carry are there laws if you do or are you just toting it out fishing or to the range.
  9. Caffeine isn't harmful in the amount your talking about.
  10. i was going to dye a piece of leather with roon but this is better . My roon dried out lol all that is left is the iron oxide i took a pinch smashed it between my fingers and sprinkled it on a piece of leather then just a spray of water dyed the leather instantly. Its just the reaction between the iron and the tannic acid already in the leather.
  11. ok i see, they are dying the leather as they tan it, previously tanned leather doesn't need a tannic acid bath.
  12. veg tan leather already has tannic acid in it that's what tans it, you don't need a tea bath. I do use it for staining wood with vinegaroon but even then i wouldn't worry about it in the slightest.
  13. that's nice looking leather you will have a great looking belt. Is it for reenactments?
  14. I've always lived on the fringe, nothing quite like it.
  15. that is fantastic work! I love the sound of sleigh bells.
  16. When i do a tooling pattern, i usually do some practice on scrap first then if it looks good I'll make it into a key fob and send it along too. i guess a guy could do the same with their logo.
  17. I'm gonna have to get me that book some day. Nope not me, it would be about 5/6 oz doubled i don't see why it wouldn't hold cartridge's. and a few silver dollars or even a pistol and knife. Maybe they were made thin so they were comfortable while riding a horse. Plus I don't think using them for a 100 years crossed their minds at all. I will add that is just one example of a cartridge money belt out of thousands made by different folks, they made things the way they wanted to just like us so leather choice was just that , personal choice, so make yours with whatever leather you want it wont be wrong. however folding thick leather like they were made will be a chore. As i understand it they were one piece folded at the bottom and sewn at the top.
  18. wowzers that is really clean and nice looking tooling there.
  19. there is a video here somewhere of a guy using one to make shoes.. i didn't know what they were either until then, but i did have one someone gave me its not a speedy stitcher but sucks just as bad IMO. i couldnt get mine sharp enough to use, guy in the video used it like an awl but i couldn't get mine sharp enough to push through leather. it makes the same stitch a sewing machine makes.
  20. how did that get by me ? Nice work there indeed Pastor what weight leather did you use?
  21. Thanks Pastor!
