  1. I contacted Stewart in California he wants period correct copies and evidently did not like my price
  2. the inside . i use weldwood contact cement by DAP I had fun with this today. It was scrap. so it did not cost me a thing except my time. i was at wally world and the cashier looked like she could use a smile. She reached for my stuff on the check out line and I slipped this on her wrist..She asked what is this for. I said for just being you. her smile was worth the labor. a win win
  3. I have one of yours. To me, It is worth more than 50 bucks in sentimental value alone. , It is a tool i will PROUDLY hand off to one of the boys but. the sob has poked my dam finger twice already. lol i was flicking the blood at my wife and she hit me. I need to turn her in on a red flag charge....NO wait. They will take my..Never mind I will just endure the beatings like a good husband LoL
  4. Learn me sum'n i stitch over my belt loops to keep the edge of the leather from catching on stuff and curling up how do you do yours?
  5. i grabbed a piece of 1/4'' copper tubing. the same stuff you would use to hook up an ice maker on your fridge or 6.35mm to you guys. I flattened it out on my anvil, then bent it to fit my wrist about 3/4 of te way around then I glued a piece of deer skin onto the copper After i glued it to the copper, I used goof proof from springfield it is a finish that has a tan cast, mine is a little darker because i added a little dye i rubbed the suede till smooth, then just for grins i applied a light film tokonole and rubbed again
  6. why can't we make these things closer to home keep our work force employed and i arm not just talking about leather tools either Brother You are preaching to the Choir, I would rather buy from local boys than a chi chi shop. BUT With all due respect to people who make stuff. An AWL, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION is not worth 40, 50 USD It just is not worth it.
  7. ..Altho i agree that quality tools from yesteryear should be, And i AM pretty certain they ARE handed down and used by the next generation. I see no evidence that this does not occur I see posts where what not being taken into account is the fact that their ae more people in the world today than yeasteyear and that said, their are more leather workers . their is not enough old tools from yesteryear to supply all the workers of todays society. So we are now back to the beginning of the conversation and talking about making an awl from steel and what steel should be used and what method used to shape the steel.. The below is just my opinion and i have no science to back it up, It is what the ""Old Man said" 2 kinds of steel, high carbon and low carbon you want to use a high carbon steel, heating process , you want to heat [anneal] high carbon steel then let it cool, you do not want to quinch it toss it in a box of sand, cover it with the sand. this will hold some of the heat and let it cool slowly, / evenly, Handles. The Japanese laugh at Americans. They say we spend our time and effort on the handle but neglect the blade, They spend there time on the blade and neglect the handle . I think they are a tad bit more enlightened as to what deserves the attention
  8. Just because it is old does not mean it is a good product, 30 years ago they made good drills and they made crap drills You can not say everything that is old is better , It all boils down to what did you buy 30 years go? did you cheap out or buy top of the line? But I will say this. Metal gears in equipment instead of plastic gears is a MUCH better quality product. I have 2 timberwolf 1/2'' angle drills the older one is still a badass and the yellow POS has been in the shop 3 times STRIPED GEARS This is NOT a picture hanging drill, this will hurt you
  9. Watch this video pretty good explanation of what happens when you quinch
  10. I am allowed 1 good idea per month.
  11. I have an idea that you might find interesting to attach the awl blade to the body. look into using a plumbing 3/8'' 0r 1/4'' compression ferrule you might have to change the size of the awl shaft by a MM or so. use the compression nut that the ferrule comes with to squeeze down and shape the ferrule, then remove that nut and screw on your pretty nut
  12. YES, that is what i meant. Sometimes i think others can read my mind LOL
  13. Gatogordo hit the nail on da head place a piece of thick leather under your work, a ploy board is for cutting on my pounding leather strip
  14. I use a 5oz for the sole and suede for the upper. you can buy a rabbit pelt if you are making a pair for winter check springfield they run a nice sale every now and then on the pelts
  15. If you simply have to wear a mask. You might as well look GOOD while you are doing it Here is a leather mask cover. It is worn over the mask, Or just slip the material inside

  18. I am looking for a 1'' masonic stamp
  19. I just made theses blades today. they are sharp. will cut leather but are still dull in my opinion. I need some 2500 grit sand paper for the next step while i was in the shop i made a belt hole jig
  20. I had those books. and my junky sister took them She heard me say that they were worth something. She did not realize what I meant was the contents, the knowledge was worth something The books are only about 5 bucks each. Oh well.. Did you check out the recipes? hundreds of them
