  1. Same with mine, no button at all.
  2. I thought about that. If they were they are to dull now. But possible I have a couple that look exactly like that. I think they started out as edge bevelers. I sharpened them up and they do work, but the skinny handles aren't very comfortable.
  3. For the record, Hamley is still open in Pendleton. I doubt they are quite the same as back then, but they might give you some more info. I stop in every year when I go to the Pendleton leather show in November.
  4. Nice job! Looks like that matting tool is working well for you.
  5. No, I sew them by hand.
  6. Here is a link to a Cheyenne medicine man's necklace. Looks like these were made just for that. Necklace of Human Fingers. Cheyenne Medicine Man. (world4.eu)
  7. Based on your pics, I did not see any figure carving tools. They all look like standard floral carving tools. The figure carving tools are at the top of the page.
  8. Some are small, but some are quite large. If they are Tandy/Craftool they will have an 'F' and a number. And many of them don't make sense until you see how they are used. Can you post pics of what you got?
  9. When we do floral carving, we use backgrounders to 'put down' the background. In figure carving there often is no background, and just beveling around our object gives the impression that it is 'down in a hole'. These matting tools help feather the beveling out and give depth to our creation.
  10. Perhaps the angle of your blade is too obtuse, meaning too 'fat'? A more acute angle may change that.
  11. You are most welcome.
  12. Excellent work! Years ago I put one of my belts in our county fair, and I beat out one of our local saddle makers for 'Judges Choice' and 1st place, so I know how you feel.
  13. Our Govt isn't doing a thing to help the ranchers and farmers. They can spend billions on all manner of useless bullsnot, but to help those that raise our food? They only paid the dairy farmers because they got tired of guaranteeing them a price for their excess products.
  14. I live in a county that has more cattle than people. What we pay here is nothing like what I see elsewhere. Especially when we buy a half directly from the guy that raises it. But yes, many will be paying more for it.
  15. I just saw this article on ranchers cutting back due to reduced grazing available. I remember back when the Govt. paid dairy owners to reduce their herds that there was lot of very reasonably priced leather. I'm wondering if we'll see that again. 'The worst we've seen': Ranchers threatened by historic heat and drought (yahoo.com)
  16. Never weighed them, just a smallish one and a bigger one. The only time I ever worried about weight was with my framing hammers.
  17. I've never been a fan of the mauls. I have poly mallets in two weights, as well as three sizes of rawhide. If I need something with more UMPH I have a 1lb dead blow hammer from Harbor Freight.
  18. I can't speak to that. But the next bag I make, for my newest rifle, will be from milled veg tan.
  19. Made one of those for a friend of my wife. I got 3 dozen oatmeal raisin cookies out of the deal!
  20. I make my black powder shooting bags from CT. They take a fair bit of abuse in the field and hold up well.
  21. I think the only criteria is your comfort. Can you use it without feeling cramped or too stretched out?
