  1. I'm guessing the lace was pulled through with a 'collar awl'. vintage-collar-awl-7996046.jpg (957×1300) (dreamstime.com)
  2. Do you mean to lace the leg closed? I've never seen or heard of such. Either straps with clips, or zippers.
  3. Looks just fine to me. I used to lace everything, but not much anymore. Somethings just sort of require it.
  4. Much like linings wrinkle when folded, as in holsters, checkbooks, etc. Overlays that can't stretch will crack. When bent, it becomes smaller than the leather it is attached to, and something has to give. And if you glue OVER the bend, it may wrinkle when opened. I know WHY, but I can't tell you HOW.
  5. I prefer to dye first, as the alcohol draws oils from the leather. But try dying samples both ways to see what happens. As to waiting between coats of oil, overnight should be enough. Also, warming the oil helps it to penetrate faster.
  6. Take a sample piece and oil it, either with Neat's-foot oil, or olive oil. Just a light coat, let it penetrate, maybe over night. If it hasn't softened, give it another light coat. I would hate to see you carve it and then not be able to get it softened up. It MAY take yet another coat, but go slowly so you don't saturate the leather. Good luck, and keep us posted.
  7. Had full access to one for several weeks. Never did see any practical applications. Still have access, but don't see any reason to go back. Spend your money as you see fit, but I think it's wasted money.
  8. C4 was my go-to when I was blowing things up for the Army, 45+ years ago. I like it, easy to use, you can cook your rations on it, even fish with it.
  9. I have three colors, white, red and green. And they are all fairly hard. Personally, I like the green. It is what my friends that make knives use.
  10. One of 2 formulas that didn't work before we came up with C4?
  11. Why do we DRIVE on a Parkway, and PARK on the Driveway?
  12. Muskrats and beavers are rodents.
  13. It WOULD work. Sir Winston isn't fast enough to catch a cat if it runs, but the last one that thought to stand up to him is buried in the orchard.
  14. I'm not sure where I got this picture. I just use it to date some of the tools I buy from time to time. All credit to whoever, it is NOT my research.
  15. I sew my loops with a simple cross stitch, then sew them in however the regular stitch would fall. I can generally angle the needle after it's through. I frequently help the process with liberal use of 'Carpenter Words'! And I don't mean square, level or plumb.
  16. True that! I've poked myself many times. That's a good time to break for coffee or beer. Wouldn't want to get blood on the project!
  17. The PROPER way to keep cats out of the leather shop;
  18. It looks like veg-tan. As to weight, I would think 6-8oz.
  19. No, Craft is more like C.
  20. QUALITY leather work will last a very long time. My mother, 85 YO, still carries a wallet she made in high school.
  21. I work construction, mostly road work now, but years of home building also. Obenauf's has been my go-to for the last 15+ years. Twice a week I treat my boots and they're good for the duration. GOOD stuff!
