  1. A lot of OLD hardware like that is simply not available anymore. Companies close, get bought out, change with the times, etc. Unless you can find some really old stock, substitution is your best bet.
  2. Yes. I don't use either of them, but that is what they are for. I use these two sizes of linen from Crazy Crow. I Waxed Linen Cord - 3 Ply, 45 Yards | Crazy Crow Trading Post Waxed Linen Cord - 5 Ply, 25 Yards | Crazy Crow Trading Post I also have some unwaxed hemp that I dye if I want colors.
  3. Maybe, but I doubt it. There is a reason the design hasn't changed significantly in decades.
  4. I haven't bought this, but it sounds like a fair deal. I have ordered from ZW in the past and have been happy with everything. It would be worth it if someone wanted to get started in belt making. Or dog collars. It's a 'grab bag', and it's up to you whether you want to take a chance.
  5. Very nice! Is that one of Serge's tools?
  6. I find it easier to make tighter turns with it. It also makes it easier to see the line ahead of the blade.
  7. Well done. I have swapped out the 'simulated' leather for the real thing for several archers.
  8. Something a bit different tonight. Some friends from the Yakama Nation honoring veterans.
  9. And it depends on the surface you tool on. Marble is easier than on a table top. The harder, denser the better.
  10. Very nice indeed! I have one of those on my to-do list.
  11. I will look through my printed material when I get to my bench. I think I have some old stuff on the shelf.
  12. I heard tell them Golden Mink are gettin' kinda scirce.
  13. I would use Neats foot oil, but guess any oil will do. After the dog ate half a jar of mink oil and shat all over the house, I won't have it in the house anymore. And I do mean EVERYWHERE!!!!
  14. NICE!! Colt Woodsman?
  15. A video cut from a CD I just got yesterday.

  17. Beautifully done!
  18. I'm guessing the lace was pulled through with a 'collar awl'. vintage-collar-awl-7996046.jpg (957×1300) (dreamstime.com)
  19. Do you mean to lace the leg closed? I've never seen or heard of such. Either straps with clips, or zippers.
  20. Looks just fine to me. I used to lace everything, but not much anymore. Somethings just sort of require it.
  21. Much like linings wrinkle when folded, as in holsters, checkbooks, etc. Overlays that can't stretch will crack. When bent, it becomes smaller than the leather it is attached to, and something has to give. And if you glue OVER the bend, it may wrinkle when opened. I know WHY, but I can't tell you HOW.
  22. I prefer to dye first, as the alcohol draws oils from the leather. But try dying samples both ways to see what happens. As to waiting between coats of oil, overnight should be enough. Also, warming the oil helps it to penetrate faster.
  23. Take a sample piece and oil it, either with Neat's-foot oil, or olive oil. Just a light coat, let it penetrate, maybe over night. If it hasn't softened, give it another light coat. I would hate to see you carve it and then not be able to get it softened up. It MAY take yet another coat, but go slowly so you don't saturate the leather. Good luck, and keep us posted.
  24. Had full access to one for several weeks. Never did see any practical applications. Still have access, but don't see any reason to go back. Spend your money as you see fit, but I think it's wasted money.
