What thickness steel are you using for your round knives?

Awesome work! I make knives as well. Never a round knife. I use a lot of AEB-L. It's great stuff. Also use Nitro-V and O1 tool steel.

Very cool!! Where did you get the turtle hide? Tan it yourself? Is it all turtle?

A guy at work just gave me this piece of leather. Not sure yet if veg or chrome tanned. More than likely veg tan. It's from the Garden State tannery in Pine Grove, PA. that burned down in 1958. The newspaper It's wrapped in is from June 10 , 1956! Kinda cool.

Purse and clutch questions
DaveP replied to DaveP's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
In the few wallets I've made they have had a 5 inch zipper. I'd like to make a 8 inch long by4 or 41/2 inch tall clutch with the zipper on three sides with a little overhang on bottom for ease of opening. It needs one zippered pocket inside. Have a few long slots for cash and cards. Outside shell from 4-5 ounce and inside 3-4 ounce veg tan. What do you think about the dimensions and leather thickness? Anyone made something similar with pictures? Thanks again for your help! -
Purse and clutch questions
DaveP replied to DaveP's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks for the replies. I know it's a big leap from sheaths and wallets. Have to start somewhere. If it turns out crappy then I'd make another until satisfied. -
A friend of mine wants me to make a purse and clutch. I haven't saddle stitched anything bigger than trucker/ biker style wallets and my knife sheaths. Purse- How do you stich something that long? Several pieces of thread? How do you add next piece of thread/ One backstitch over last end point? What leather thickness is best? She wants a stiffer bottom with pliable upper. Pockets on the inside and out with zippers! No cloth will be used. Would you line it with thin leather? If so...How thin? This will be made all from veg tan leather along with the clutch. Purse will be black. Clutch- Where do you get strong small zippers for that would go 3 sides of a clutch? What thickness leather for outside cover and inside pockets. One will have a zipper. Clutch needs to be blue. All I have currently is navy blue Feibing's. It's VERY dark almost looks black. Need something else. Recommendations? Are there any good free patterns for a larger clutch? Thanks again, David

New sheath for friends knife
DaveP replied to DaveP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks for the kind words. Reference makers mark on the front. I've done this from the beginning on all my knife sheaths. All but the very first few. Different from everyone else's. Unique! The customers like it as well. -

New sheath for friends knife

A friend asked me to sharpen his knife. Once I got it home I noticed the point was really dull. More so than the rest of the blade. After looking at it for a little bit I put it in the original sheath. Heard a little click. Thought that was very odd. Then looking into the sheath I realized the rivet was not even in the welt and was rubbing the blade. So I made him a new one. You might be able to see the shiny spot inside the original sheath.

A friend wants me to make a leather bottle coozy. I've trying to think what the liner/ insulator would be made from. I thought of just a piece of rubber wrapped in leather. I think it would get stuck from the bottle sweating. Anyone make any and with what products? Thanks again
