  1. Hi guys! I'm a noob in leatherworking and my first projects concern leather journals but I have a problem. I can't find metal lockers for journals. Can u direct me to a website that sells something like this (click the link to see the locker I need to find) Tx a lot guys!
  2. This is my first post, but I have been lurking for quite some time, nut I have finally decided to tap into the collective knowledge of this site. I have been actively looking for a "Full Grain" leather that is drum dyed throughout. I need the leather to be preferrably 5/6oz with the 7oz being the absolute max thickness. I do not care if the leather is veg tan, chrome tanned, or oil tanned. It just needs to wear well, and be able to patina with time and use. I have searched different suppliers and goods manufactures to try to find the ellusive hide. The closest thing I can find would be the leather Saddleback uses for their products, but I am confused because Dave Munson says that he uses chrome tanned leather, but everything else I have read has said that Chrome tanned will not Patina. And I know from experience that SB leather ages very well. I have ordered from Weaver, Waterhouse, Tandy, and Springfield. So basically I am looking for a full grained, 5/6oz, fully dyed bropwn leather that will age well. Does anyone know of a supplier that has such a hide. Or does anyone know of a specific hide from the above manufatures that fits this criteria? I am open to any help I can get...thanks -Jake
  3. Hi, I got some inquiry and hope that someone can give some advice. Soucing for leather hide is quite difficult where I came from. So my best options, I get my supply mostly from eBay, I get them in small sheets of 1 squre feet. Mainly I'm interested to make wallets, card holders, something like that. So want to ask, what thickness is the best in making them? my handmade bifold wallet currently I'm using is 2mm thick (4~5oz maybe?) I lovin it. currently I've found a supplier that have 2oz belly and 7oz hide (which the price cost+shipping are within my budget). I want my handmade wallets/card holders to last and at the same time not that bulky. if I make the whole wallet in 7oz, would it be too heavy? Or can the leather be mixed outer and inner layer? Advice and recommendations are really appreciated. Best regards
  4. Hey Folks, Just thought I would share a few pics of recent projects that I have gotten back from clients. This month also marked a new addition to my line-up: custom embroidery. Was introduced by one of my corporate clients to their embroidery vendor so I'm now adding that to the list of offerings. Also came across a site that does custom gremlin bells and line 20 snap heads, some of which I have never seen before like the WillyG skulls on the tank bib. Enjoy! ~Chris 2010 Harley FLHX rear fender bib 2010 Harley FLSTF "FTW" rear fender bib (custom fit for LePera seat & 9" rear fender) 2000 Harley FXDX custom tank bib with 12mm chrome spots and 3/4" WillyG skulls 2006 Harley FXDi35 Anniversary Edition rear fender bib - the embroidery has to be done on 3/4oz chrome tanned petite calf or goat so I married it with the 6oz H.O. bib body with a raised inlay. The contrast of textures made for a cool combination when finished. 2010 Harley FLSTF rear fender bib - this client sent me pics and drawings of his factory seat and asked that I design a bib to match all of the aspects, texture, lacing ribs, etc. Was quite a bit of work but came out nicely I think.
  5. Hi Everyone, Tim McDaniel here. I have a question and I am hopeing somebody can answer bit. Does anybody know of a good tannery that offers cowhides, rabbit, goat, and deer hides that will sell their stuff ? and can they do it on wholesale ? Sorry, it was two questions. Tim McDaniel Co Owner of "Who Knows ?":
  6. Hi Everyone - So I worked for this company using Horween veg-tanned leather (HF, Essex, Dublin) + I wanted to start exploring leather working on my own time. I purchased a side of Tooling/Carving Leather from WC, since I've read that this type of leather is used a lot for belts/handles and that's what I'm looking to make. When I got the leather, I was surprised by how rigid it is. When you knock on it, it sounds like you're knocking on cardboard. And since I'm new to carving leather, I wanted to ask if this is what its supposed to be like when you get it straight from the tannery?
  7. Hi, I'm an upholsterer specialising in leather and teach at university. I dabble in leatherwork at my home workshop and have been asked to do a 6hr block teaching "leather stitchwork for accessories. Would anyone be willing/able to help me with a lessonplan which is to include making as well as induction demo for students from the Anarchy Studio These are Yr 2 & 3 students equally from Textiles and Jewellery (Group Size 30 but we can identify how many spaces for each event). Some students are complete newcomers but all confirm that they're eager for more experience and advise. Students now have a good range of existing design ideas and sketchbook processes which you could use to drive sessions/ direct their making. Students would ideally be able to learn and practice one or two processes by the end of the day, and know enough to be able to later return independently to the area to practice further. If you are able to help (I really hope so!), I would be very greatful. This will be for just a 6 hour block
  8. I have an Artisan Toro 3200 that I bought for my blanket business but have found it is just far to much machine for me, it has been kept in pristine condition and only used 10x, I do admit I am a bit afraid of it after I sewed through my finger last May but have used it since without problems, I turn it on and sew through some thin leather to keep it moving good. It's basically brand new. I am located in Buford GA and I will take no less then $2,100 for it.

    Leather Purse Maker

Am looking for a sample made of a clutch purse I have designed. Needs exoctic skins leather purse making experience. Please email. Carlembach@aol.com
  10. I'm looking for some knowledgable person to give some input on how they might tuck some sting ray skin under a metal surrounding edge. I picture it being like carpentry, tucking carpet under the wall's edge? but how would you go about it? or is there another way?
  11. As you can see in the picture, right around where the stirrup buckle goes, there is a large mark. i do not know what it is caused by but this is my treasured Crosby that I just bought and it means the world to me because it fits my 10 hand pony so well! I need desperate help because I have to get it fixed up and I have to make this pony feel his best and not buck me off for the 10th time! I am not planning on spending a lot to fix it but I will spend a bit. Right when this pony is trained, he is being shipped off to go to the Devon horse show! Please help! I appreciate it! If you have any product that could help, please mention the name! Thanks! (will post pictures below)
  12. Hello all, this is my first post. Leatherworking was passed down to me by my dad but was not taught (I got all his stuff when he passed away). So I have a lot of tools and have been messing around for a few years learning this and that but I want to start making my armor now and getting more serious about the craft. I have picked out the general armor I want to make, see attached photos for my inspiration. I am an archer so I need to be able to move my arms easily. I know how to make a mold of my bust to form wet leather but I do not want one single piece of leather for my breastplate. I want something pieced together like the pictures but I am wondering how to do it. Is it possible to rivet pieces together then wet and form them? or is this going to mess up the rivets? I'm going to start with a pattern on paper before I cut into leather but I was hoping for a little advice before I start to maybe save myself some time. I am a woman, if the pictures didn't give it away, so making the breasts fit is the problem here. I am also very interested in splint armor but figure I'll save that project for later when I can have my brother help me (he is a blacksmith). Any advice will help. This is my first piece of armor so I am in the dark other then what I have read and watched. thanks I love how this armor fits her. It's more warrior then what I am looking to make but I like how it is put together. I like how this covers her chest completely, I don't need to be flashing people. I really love this piece a lot. This is more what I am looking to make but I am heavier so I am wondering if the more open top of this one will work for me.

Hi Leatherworkers, i thought I'd let you know that I just opened an etsy shop for my Welker Handmade Leather Stamps. The url is http://www.etsy.com/...erleatherstamps Check it out, let me know your opinion of my shop, any advice anyone has about selling on etsy, or just your opinion of etsy in general. 14. This is a corset in progress. I've sewn a couple of traditional corsets, and this one is a bit of an engineering feat for me, in deciding which order things have to be done in since its not your traditional method of construction. I almost have the leather exterior done. I have a heavy cotton lining in black and white houndstooth, and it contains the bones and is waiting on a busk. I will stitch the lining to the exterior, and add a wide leather bias binding to the edges once the buckles are completed. This piece and the one I posted before this are going to be costume pieces for this years carnaval. I have one more corset to do, which will be a longer under bust piece out of heavier leather and using all rivet construction. Any tips for a riveted corset??
  15. Hello all! I'm a very excited new member to the leather worker community. I'm putting together a small production of specialized unique wallets and I'm looking for some quality leather for them. I have found a bunch of great shops, however it seems that most of the best leather gets imported from countries in South America such as Brazil and Argentina. Can anyone point me in the right direction of who to contact down there so that I can look into buying some? I know that they will usually only work with individuals that will buy in bulk and I believe that I will be buying enough to appeas that. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
  16. Hello Gang, I made this watch band cuff. Since I am into guns. I made a ammo theme band. This is my first watch band cuff I made. Let me know what you think, and How I can do better. Thanks Chad
  17. I'm cleaning up around here and need some space. Getting back to leatherwork more often but need to finish some home projects (new siding half done, and I'll be doing some plumbing ABOVE my shop). Selling good quality materials at big discounts. If I don't have it, I don't have to move it 5 times! I have some leathercraft clutch purse kits, some leather already cut out for handbags (including lining leather), some wallet and checkbook parts, belt blanks, half a dozen spools of leather lace, a few craftaids, patterns & books, not sure what else until I get in there. Not selling the tools, as I can wipe those off and get going. More when I get organizing. Pictures as I get time, but message if you have interest in some of what I mentioned. These will not be seen on Ebay (I hate that camp). Shipping in US only, Paypal is preferred. Personally rather see this stuff go to someone "new" and learning, but not necessary.
  18. I would like a custom name tag made for a new Kenneth Cole leather briefcase. It's a Christmas present 2012 so I'm hoping to get it done ASAP. Thanks, Laura Menlo Park, CA
  19. This was intended for Wiz but I decided to post it here in case anybody else has any suggestions. Let me start by saying that I am new to leatherworking and have never used a sewing machine before. With that being said I’ve been looking into getting my first machine and I could probably raise the money for a cb4500 but I don’t know if I can justify it(YET). I am looking for something that is as versatile as possible and I see you have a National that you are happy with. What I was looking for and I could not find in the forum is something along the lines of (like they say in my country .. the mind after the fact) with the knowledge that you have now if you started from nothing and you were doing a large variety of projects from leather purses and wallets to gun holsters what tools/sewing machines would you buy , in what order and what prices would you be willing to pay? Also I see you recommend going to a local shop for a machine. I live in Ann Arbor and I’ve been looking for such a thing around here but it’s been a fruitless hunt to this point. Is my best bet going to Toledo? I would appreciate any input you might have regarding this. Thank you Alin
  20. Hey, I've got some flat-back type leather seats in a vehicle -- I'm wanting to put a logo on the backrest or the headrest, and am thinking of having the logo cut out of plyable vinyl with 3M adhesive on the back. Do you think the vinyl would stick well to the seat back? The headrest is far enough back that it really never has anything on it, so I don't think that movement would interfer with the logo, however the backrest would look better, but does have movement. Thanks!

  23. I’ve been writing about the Greta Constantine - Danier collection for a while now.. There are some must have Danier Leather pieces like the sexy leather detail dress and skirt, leather combo vest, obi wrap leather belt, and jersey and lamb leather leggings that I love. I was lucky enough that Danier took notice and sent me $100 gift certificate to giveaway. I'll have the contest open for just a Day so if you are interested go here: http://styleblog.ca/2012/11/28/style-days-of-christmas-danier-leather-giveaway-2/
