  1. SHOP CLOSING - A colleague is selling his equipment. His assessment puts the used equipment value around $250K but Dr. says he has to simplify and he has two other businesses (and we all know the leather business is involved!) - so he's looking to sell ALL for $60K. (He is not ready to break it up) All is located in Central Florida. I tried to attach a pdf but it was too big and couldn't get it reduced. A little hard to look at in list form like this but you can email me for a pdf copy > barcsaddlery@yahoo.com The list is not complete. He has a few more pieces of equipment to catalog and a lot of raw materials. If you're interested, please contact me and I can get photos and help him complete the inventory report. 2. I'm selling my Cobra NP-4 skiver with servo motor, including table with wheels for $1,000 or best offer. I would keep it but unfortunately, I need to make room in my already-too-small apartment for the upcoming arrival of our first son. I've only used the skiver 3 or 4 times, for a total of less than 1-2 hours, so it's practically new and pretty quiet. I have the original box it came in as well. Pickup only in San Francisco.
  3. Used Heritage 8" skiver/splitter. Blade is still sharp and works great. I don't need this anymore and am clearing out my back room. $300 and I pay for shipping to lower 48 States. We can discuss shipping if you are somewhere else.
  4. Somebody had mentioned I needed a skiver. Well, for what you have to spend on one you don't get much cutting surface. According to Mr. Johnson any pull through skiver is good for three inches of width. Whether it's a four inch, 6 inch, or even an eight inch. That's great for a belt, but not much good for even a wallet. The readily available hand cranks I have seen are about $1400.00 new for a six inch. That could work for many more things than a belt or a wallet, but still not big enough for say a holster. And $1400.00 is way way out of my price range. I'm getting there (to my point). Today at work a guy was changing out a blade on a flooring cutter. I didn't put a tape measure on it but I figure it's a 12 inch blade. It had a single edge sharpened of about 60 degrees. Hmmmmmm. Ok, here comes the idiocy part. Do you think a hand crank laundry wringer could be set up like a skiver. I would have to "machine" a bracket for the blade. But I think this could possibly work. I can get a quality wringer for $150.00. I can salvage the old blade and VOILA!! Well, anybody ever march to this drummer?
  5. Good day, I was given this small skiver when people around me found out I wanted to start working with leather. It is an American St Louis model B. I sharpened the blade and reinstalled it, tried to feed a piece of 7 once leather but in order for the wheel to pull the leather, It leaves marks on the lesther. I found some illustrations and pics of that machine but nothing on adjustments and how to run pieces of leather without ruining them. If any one can point me in the right direction I would appreciate. It does however makes for a lovely weight to keep a door open. yves
  6. I'm hoping one of y'all can give me some advice, because this machine is costing me a fortune in lost leather! I'm using it to skive 2-3oz down to 1.5 or so - and I go nice and slow, starting off with it barely gripping the leather at all, slowing lowering the presser foot bit by bit barely removing anything. Then it works really well for a spell, then as I move to a bigger piece or a piece I can't mess up on, it grips it and ruins it. I just can't understand it, and I'm hoping there's a trick I'm missing? I have replaced the bell knife, replaced the feed roll with an emory type (it came with a metal toothed roller), and the front tension spring did not provide much tension, so I added some electrical tape around it and that actually helped a lot to decrease the frequency...however, it still happens too frequently. Here's an album of the machine and some leather it's ruined! (https://goo.gl/photos/pPdV57qhxAp1Kha48) Any ideas? I'd be forever grateful for any advice or tips on more efficiently using one of these machines! Cheers! - Ross
  7. Rare Fortschritt Leather Skiving Machine - Fortuna Type $1000 This is a very rare german made leather skiving machine. It cuts a wide range of skives because it has a long curved presser foot that can be adjusted a number of ways to get different angles and widths. The machine is in excellent working shape, see a sample skive photo below. There is cosmetic wear as this is an old machine. If you want a machine with great bones and a great history, this is what you are looking for. I purchased this a couple years ago from a leatherworker in Nyack, NY. He owned it since the mid 70s but it has not been used since 1995ish. Prior to him owning the machine, this skiver was used to manufacture NYC firemen's helmets in a manhattan factory. The machine is mounted on a converted wooden sewing machine table and is run with a clutch motor and leather and rubber belts. This is comparable to fortuna machines and parts such as Bell knife, sharpening stone, rollers, presser feet should be interchangeable with parts easily found on ebay if necessary down the road. Everything on it right now still appears to have plenty of life left. I will also include a heavy metal roller tool for compressing turned/glued edges. Local pickup only in Ridgewood, NJ. You may inspect items prior to purchase. Payment Methods - cash / money order / bank check only Thanks very much! The website is not letting me upload photos, so if you are interested, PM me and I'll send you a Craigslist link to photos.
  8. Landis Belt Press that I bought in Canada directly from Landis factory and I refurbished it cosmetically. This machine is 110V electric and will punch all belt holes and tip of belt with ease. The current die is the original and comes with the sale but this machine needs a new die made. Everything works great, but again, the die needs replacing which you can have made by Campbell-Randall for $350-$400. Motor is very strong, has fresh paint and oiled well. This is a very rare machine and I have never found one like it. Used in my belt shop but need to make room in shop for bigger equipment. Foot pedal and hand operation methods (they are interlinked so operate as you choose. Asking $3800. Must pick up or YOU arrange for it to be picked up. I can crate to for you for $200. This is a rare and reliable piece of machinery for your leather shop. Don't let it pass you by. Questions? Please reply to post thanks! My zip code is 90731 which is where this machine is located.
  9. I am thinking of purchasing a skiver. Does anyone have any advice on quality brand names and the ones to stay away from? Thank you ahead of time.
  10. Hello, I'm in the market for a 6" splitter, have been looking at a few Landis splitters but am open to other options. Does anyone here have one that they're looking to get rid of? I'm also looking for a good burnisher motor, and a clicker or hydraulic press. Thank you, Andrew
  11. There is a kijiji ad in Quebec offering a TAKING TK-801 skiver for $500. The owner keeps replacing the ad each month, so it has been for sale for some months now. Owner will not negotiate price. Seems to be fairly priced considering the new price. And for USA, the current exchange rate is especially favourable. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-commercial-industriel/trois-rivieres/taking-skiver-leather-vinyl-rubber/1111964822?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true If it wasn't for $350 shipping to Calgary, I probably would have bought it. Tom
  12. Tandy just put their older model Pro Splitter (modeled after an Osborne #84) on the Outlet website for $249.99 online sales only and sporting a suggested retail price of $899. They came out with two newer ones. A 4 3/4 inch "High Tech" model and a 6 inch model with the fancy new Craftool Pro black rubber handle. Can anyone attest to improvements in these new models or is the older model a better deal? The older Pro Splitter is an 8 inch and comes with an extra blade. http://www.tandyleatheroutlet.com/p-383-pro-splitter-wextra-blade.aspx The new Procraft Deluxe Splitter https://www.tandyleather.com/en-usd/search/searchresults/3795-00.aspx $385 elite price.

  15. Selling my Omac Model 978 thin leather skiver. I bought this 8 years ago or so, had it sent to a Texas company to be rebuilt and it's still on the pallet it was returned on. It's been stored in my warehouse ever since. I also bought a thick leather skiver at the same time and that's the one I currently use. Make an offer. Homer Illinois 61849
  16. Looking to thin out the heard a little bit (the shops getting a bit crowded and got some new toys to replace these). I've got the following machines: Landis 20, 3 in 1 with a 12" throat. The cutting wheel needs to be replaced, but otherwise looks in good condition. $250 American, 3 in 1 again with a 12" thoat, the cutting wheel looks like it could use a sharpen but other wise looks good. $250 Landis model 14, Handcrank Skiver. In great condition and up to this point have been using it regularly in the shop. $250
  17. I had a vintage Fortuna s50v that was set up in a particular way: when the ON switch was turned on, the bell knife rotated at constant high speed. The feed roller variable speed was controlled with the foot pedal (a light press on the foot pedal would ensure a slow feed; flooring the foot pedal made the feed roller rotate at top speed). This setup was perfect for the types of leathers I skive. When moved abroad I sold the Fortuna, and am now looking at a Japan-made Nippy NP-202 or NP-2 or skiver (essentially same-same parts as that old Fortuna). Local skiver vendors say to set a skiver up that way two motors are needed. One underneath and an additional motor mounted to the table behind the skiver (back right). I am not very mechanical, but not inclined to want to mount a motor on the table behind the skiver. The Fortuna v50s seemed to have only one motor. Enclosing photo and have many more photos of the guts & back of the skiver if helpful. Question: In order to run bell knife at constant speed and control feed roller at variable speed, are two motors necessary? What is the best optimized way to set up the skiver? Specific suggestions would be appreciated.

  19. I have a lead on a fortschritt skiver with table and clutch motor that used to be in an old factory that made firemen's hats in NYC. The buyer is asking $500 which seems to be a pretty fair price to me compared to cost of new chinese made machines. I saw it operational last night and it seems to be working reasonably well. My questions: Is there anything specific that I should look at that wears out over time? Belts and knife seem. Are fortschritt skivers interchangable with other skiver parts? Bell knife, feed wheel, etc? Are there any online resources that you can point me to in regards to maintainence/rebuild of this type of machine? Does $500 seem like a fair price? Thanks

  21. I've recently acquired two manual skiving / splitting machines. Both are very old but in very good working condition. The blades on both I would like to source spare blades. I would say there is no chance of 'off the shelf' blades. One of them looks about the same size as a woodworking plane blade. The other, which has two holes in it to mount the blade, is a lot squarer but could be similar to a large spoke-shave blade. What I would like is either 1/ blades I can cut down to size 2/ blade stock I can cut to size and sharpen 3/ somewhere in UK that can make me blades to fit The sizes are (width across blade x length x thickness) 1/ 1 3/4" x 3 3/4" x 1/8" 2/ 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 1/8" As these are both old English machines the sizes will all be imperial. Can anyone help? Claire PS I haven't the facilities to retemper or put in a temper of anything.
  22. Hi guys. I'm refurbishing a Manufacturers Supplies Co. "Combination Skiver" probably from the early 60s. I think it's a knockoff of a Fortuna bell knife machine, or even a rebadged Fortuna. I say that because it doesn't match any of Manufacturers Supplies Co.'s patents, and they have a few for different machines. I need the main head unit belt (not the 3 phase clutch motor drive belt) and serpentine belt dimensions. The owners manual only includes part numbers. After 4 calls with promises of follow up, Manufacturers Supply Co. (still in business in St. Louis) does not appear interested in either selling the parts or telling me their dimensions. I can't fault them for not stocking $10 parts for a 50 year old machine. So — I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone who has one of these or a similar Fortuna give me the dimensions of these belts so I can possibly avoid having to order 10 parts from McMaster to find the correct size. Thanks in advance.
