I have a cobra 4 and I have found that the little knurled thread tension knobs are a sewing persons best friends. Play with those knobs and sew a stitch a few inches long. Then adjust some more and sew some more. Repeat until you get the stitch you want. Also be careful when pulling your thread with the foot pedal pressed. If there is excess thread not taken up it will wrap around something you surely don't want it to. Remember when in peril, Call Steve. He knows the answer. Joel

Customer Service And Quality With A Sewing Machine!
GrampaJoel replied to jbird's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Well I don't know for sure when I got my Cobra class 4, it has an early serial number. I suppose I have had my cobra machine about two years give or take a little. I love it, and the time using it seems to just fly by. The customer service I have received has been beyond belief. Especially in today's world. As to Steve himself. He should change his name to Mr. Customer Service. Heck, he's just a big o' teddy bear of a guy. Heart of GOLD and pretty darn well versed on sewing machines and how and why they do or don't work. To top it off Steve has Never failed to help me with a problem or take the time to chat about things. Look up all-around-nice-guy in the dictionary. You'll see Steve's face. I said this Joel -
Saddle #4 Rebuilt Wade Saddle
GrampaJoel replied to seveneves's topic in Saddle & Tack Maker Gallery
Nicely done. Is it very close to what the original looked like when new? What did you use for the horn wrap? It has a real clean look. Joel -
Josh, what are the options? do you ship then torn down or put together?

Santa Fe Saddle? I Think....
GrampaJoel replied to troutbum1212's topic in General Saddlery Discussion
Are you asking about a saddle like this? Franks 1800's Saddle see this thread-->> thread Joel -
being a leather worker, I might ask,... what is the difference between the leather used in the past and what you are using for the recreations? How authentic are the designs of the pieces you make? or as just someone passing by being curious, I might ask,,, is the shield very heavy? Will it really stop a sword ? Hope this helps Joel

Mother's Day Present
GrampaJoel replied to Double U Leather's topic in Saddle and Tack Accessory Items
...and that is how it usually works too!! I have gotten more work from just making deliveries at horse events, than with all my advertising. I have set up booths, not to sell items, but to inform and help out. I get lookers that want but dont have any money, and I also get some people who walk up just to put something down with a disagreeable comment. That's ok too. But, when I make a delivery out in the open for all to see, it never fails that at some point later in time I get a call from someone that was there. and to add to your day , let me add another, VERY NICE JOB on the can cover to your stockpile! They look pretty nice for a first pair. Joel

3/4 Oz. Leather And Other Questions...
GrampaJoel replied to Chris of WV's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I use the 3-4oz weight as a liner for heavier leathers. Especially when I need a clean lite colored look. Sorry about the photo size. -
How-To...introduction To Making A Whaletail Motorcycle Bib
GrampaJoel replied to Spinner's topic in How Do I Do That?
Spinner. While I don't do moto stuff, I appreciate the effort you took to make this lesson available to leather workers all over the world. Perhaps some that might be in the very area that you find your own clients. This unselfishness is very commendable. My hat's off to you sir! Joel -
Tim, you sure are getting good at the overlays!! Nice choice of colors too! Joel

Dang, that's tasty! I wouldn't mind seeing more of that one. Is the leather glued to the wooden clock,or is it all leather? what a wonderful art piece it is! Joel

Thanks Denis. I was hoping to find them closer to home. If I have to I will order from down under. I think they are a good standard you measure with. If the tree maker uses them. Joel

I'm looking for a stateside retailer for the Dennis Lanes system. Does anyone know of one? Thanks Joel

I just finished repairing a saddle yesterday. I sewed a saddle stitch using double needles. I used poly thread size 277 that I waxed myself. I feel that the wax helps it to sort of lock against itself and hold tighter stitches as I sew. When I machine sew I just use the poly thread. Joel

Congrats! Feels good, don't it...

Largest Formed Tank Bib I've Done
GrampaJoel replied to Spinner's topic in Motorcycles and Biker Gear
Very nicely done, and Matched!! The dye job looks super also. Is it Vinegaroon, or dye? Joel -
Very cool. That is the easy part no doubt. Now as you start upon your business life ( 'legal by permit'), remember that the FEDs, and the State( and yes sometimes multiple states) , Counties , and Cities all want their share of what ever you sell. ....and it never stops. Have fun Joel

I would think that a lot could be done using 'c' clamps and stitching horses to hold the leather while you work on it. I would think that stamping could be quite a challenge though.

I take it you are starting a business. Don't forget your state tax id number if needed, and Fed tax id are different. Oh yeah they want money from you too on occasion. good luck. Joel

Another Pair Of Square Bottom Chinks
GrampaJoel replied to Tkleather1's topic in Clothing, Jackets, Vests and Chaps
Come on now Tim. Fess up... where did you get the great pair of chinks from? Did you by them online? Nice job Tim. I like the leg color. They look clean, simple, and useful, but 9 inch fringe... man that's a lot of cut'n. Joel -
Steve Derricott, Thanks for the reply. I got both of your emails in one email today. 3-30-11. But it was after I had already posted my question here. I hope you aren't upset. I am very happy with the tool I purchased from you. I can tell it's quality just by looking at it. I am new to this art of fine quality laceing stuff and wanted the best tool I could buy. I have no idea what crowning the lace is about, so hence my question about using the bar. I probably will find out as I get further into learning lacing and braiding. I took a quick look at your facebook page and saw the pictures. I will visit more when I get some time to spend quality time there. I am looking forward to many happy evenings using the Lace Master tool. Joel
