Pre-Cut Leathers or Full Sides (Or Hides)
Doc Reaper replied to TanneryNYC's topic in Marketing and Advertising
I prefer the full or side, I feel I’m being overcharged on precut -
When you say drywall razor blades, are you talking about the case knife blades??? Could ya do a snapshot, please

I understand why toxo would want to use clay to make a mold! I have had an active leather shop for the last 13 years, and I have yet to see the same gun twice, once someone bought in one just like mine. Most of these pistols weren’t even close in design. From 17 to 50 caliber and there is no medium I can go off of to make multiple holsters. Blue Guns cost around $50 and up, if they were like $15 or $20 then I would have a collection but I guess somewhere along the line plastic has turned into gold. If I knew how to make foundry type molds I would use the lead I have collected (200 lbs) to make dummies - ANY INPUT IS WELCOME ON THIS, PM ME WITH MOLD MAKING IDEAS

What the hell guys?!?! Y’all are talking about going around your buttocks to get to your elbow. I always cut - tool - stain/dye - sew - mold - sand - final dye - polish. How in the world do ya sew a holster after it’s folded and sewn along the trigger/spine????????? Do a video so we can all see how it’s done!

There might be a clip holding it in place

How do I get that book????

Luvin the art work, I might steal that idea for shotgun cartridge pouch

Gezzer I’m seeing two different sizes in your hand. On the left side is “line 20” and the larger one on the left is a “line 24”, you will get unsatisfactory results if you mix the sizes. 20 won’t set a line 24 and a line 24 will not set a 20.
-
Ok Guys, I see I have to simplify this, these are the tools I use - line 24 snaps, left side is a quality snap head (notice it’s all one piece) while on the right is a two piece head which is really cheap. If you decide to set this, it will sink down into the head - pulling its female counter with it. I’m also sure that quality control is not as strict as the one on the left. While it pulls down something has to give and I’m sure it’s the tolerances around the spring, removing room for the spring to expand. Plus the sketchy QC which was loose to begin with, some fit tight some loose. if you have a stem that is too long find a way to file, sand, or grind it to a more manageable length. I have stopped using cheaply made snaps. The Tandy brand is better left on the shelf.
-
fredk- I see a set of snaps at the beginning of this feed. That male piece all the way over to the right is what I try to avoid. That whole stem (male) piece caves in pulling down on the female part thus making the outside portion (where the spring is) slightly smaller. I was guessing that the ones I had were made in China as cheaply as possible. (I hate cheaply made crap from anywhere) I will post a second picture of what a better quality snap looks like and everyone here may benefit from it. I too purchased cheap China crap and don’t want to throw away money. I might try using an epoxy mixture and placing it inside the mushroom cap just so it doesn’t collapse when hit with a hammer. I have 500 snaps (2000 pieces) of the cheaply made version from China, lord knows I despise companies that cut cost to save a penny, I’ll pay the extra 25 cents for a quality product

Please help me sharpen this curved blade
Doc Reaper replied to NoLifeTilLeather's topic in Sharpen it!
I use an 18 inch piece of various diameters of vinyl plumbing with 1500 grit sand paper stuck with a light amount of adhesive spray to anchor it. I also use one with leather on it (approximately one inch diameter pipe) to strop with - make em and save the money. If you live near Kannapolis NC I will show you how to sharpen -
How much to charge for your leather goods?
Doc Reaper replied to GrampaJoel's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I know of only one guy, he rocks at what he does, and I personally would hangout with him because he is a real craftsman and an artist. I see this discussion here is an awesome one. Each of us are craftsmen in our own right (except for the hangouts and pokers with sticks) some of you have seen what another member is fully capable of and we are happy that they are there. If we all agreed on what a particular item should cost then all those items would be identical to the guy that makes em cheaper, leather is not cheap by any means. A set price forces artistic flair to diminish and things become plain and boring. There is a guy that hawks this site, copies items he sees us creat and mass produced that item and he is willing to cut his own throat just so his item is the only thing selling. What a trooper! I was with a customer in my shop, he was wanting saddle bags with a distinct pattern around a tooled character. I told him that I would get it on paper to get his approval and I’d get him a tight ballpark on price. All through this discussion was a young guy taking in the full conversation, but he remained silent and left when I was done with the customer. The following weekend that young guy shows back up with a set of saddle bags that he made and designed just by listening to my conversation with my customer, who happened to be in the shop. My customer purchased those saddle bags from that young guy for $180 and told me to build the ones we had also discussed, a handful of weeks later and I had that customer back in the shop to pick up the bags I built. He had the bags in hand that he got from the young guy, who was also in the shop. Upon comparison it was like holding a Yugo up next to a fully tricked out Abrams tank. The young guy was embarrassed by his efforts to compete with my skills. My customer was blown away just by the craftsmanship, and the artwork was at a whole other level. The young guy stated that it was the difference between a kindergartener and a van Gogh. And yes I charged an obscene amount for my efforts. My customer gave the young guys bags to his daughter that was just starting out riding. Plus the customer stated that he wanted a full set (made a tool bag and a travel bag that slept 4) the young guy became a puppy wanted to learn. What to charge has so many variables that one could start by basic and customary charges but then there are charges that make upgrades what they are. Cheap copycats will always be there! But quality will be there till the end of time -
The Freedoms or Rights We Have or Do Not Have

Because the government has conditioned the people to be soft! Like Jan 6 we should of massed with arms and shown them a real insurrection, they planned an insurrection, arrested innocent civilians, now they are caught red handed and most of ya sit at home letting “someone else” take care of it! I call that cowardice and no matter which way you look at it you are doing it with a yellow stripe and no backbone or nads! If ya wanna go after em I’m game -

Here in the good ole USA we are not allowed to fly what ever flag we want, I’m from the North and we were taught sooooo very different than what the South was taught. As a child we were taught that republicans were the founders of the KKK - that was a lie! We were told that the rebel flag was used in slavery - lie, it was for battle and territorial!!! We were taught that it’s ok to put an unqualified man into a position he had no business being near - that was allowed because of affirmative action, some still practice this today - look at our media speaker!!! In NY state to purchase a hand gun you first had to get a permit to get a second permit to legally purchase a pistol!!!!! I say it’s time to end the child sex trade. IT IS TIME TO MAKE GOVERNMENT CRIMINALS FEAR THE PUNISHMENT AND THE PEOPLE THEY GOVERN - don’t have a rifle - MAKE THEM -

Spam from China, I thought y’all folks were well above this -
We are all cheapskates and penny-pinchers here! I have been playing around with vinegaroon and need a good way to strain it. Pro-Dye black is $45 a quart here in NC so I need a backup plan for dye. I saw that there are ways to make brown dye, it’s worth a look to see if you can make something that will work!
-
The amount of leather you had to dye was a 2 inches wide by 24 inches long (a good size chunk) and I’m guessing the bottle size is the 4 ounce (.118 liters)? And that you covered all the sides. I’m going by your words, that using 1.3 ounces is about the right amount (Unless you used one third of the 32 ounce bottle = around 10 ounces, which is way too much). I really don’t use my air brushes much and I’m sure the amount used would be about half an ounce, but the finished look would be drastically different
-
Chuck, that is yet another fine piece of work I have seen you create. You really should make a video of how it’s done (sidestepping the ethical dispatchment - squeamish snowflakes and all) I’d be a might bit interested in it!
-
Great work, shows us that you did go outside to play while doing that piece. Where on there did you use 500 grit sandpaper????

I’m liking your shhtuff, what weight leather are ya using???

Dyeing, 2nd Attempt
Doc Reaper replied to Gosut's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
I purposely left a 5”x 3” chunk of leather outside on a table exposed to the elements. It is now a deep range tan color, no dyes or oils were applied, and the best seasons are the warmest to place the leather in the direct sunlight
