Then I need someone to look at this and help me understand what happened. I purchased the $10 bag of iron sulfate, added it to a 3/4 full jar (Libby’s chicken gravy jar) of water, I used 2 jar lids full of the iron sulfate. All I got was a light gray in return, it turns medium dark gray with neatsfoot oil. I’m experimenting with the iron sulfate (30%) while I was also checking out my one week old vinegaroon and just one drop of the roon dropped onto the iron sulfate test strip, it turned it dark blue in the blink of an eye. While both mixtures took a bit of time to color the leather the two coming together was like wow fast! The picture shows 2 strips - both test strips are test for the iron sulfide. The round mark is where the drop of groon landed by chance

Today is a full 7 days the 0000 steel wool has been bathing in white vinegar, the initial 2 pads no longer exist. The leather is dipped for 4 to 5 seconds and allowed to dry. It’s turning a dark blueish gray. When neatsfoot oil is applied the leather turns black. Added 15 ounces of vinegar and one more steel wool pad. At present time I have used a full 60 ounces of white vinegar and 3 of the 0000 steel wool pads, I’ll test it in four days.

I too purchased my CB4500 from cowboy Bob about 8 years ago, I could not afford all the bells and whistles nor did they exist. Most folks just stepping into the sewing arena don’t have a clue as to what they are going to need. So they (like myself) will get the workhorse not knowing it’s limitations, nor is the seller going to mention it’s limits because they usually think that the buyer knows what they want and need. I usually sewn items by hand and patches I would sew on using a 90 year old Singer sewing machine. When the Cowboy came I had no idea there were other attachments that I could have been slowly adding to my 4500. Then I tripped over Aussie and his thin plate, then I tripped over Uwe Gross and he had a flat working table that I could use. Then there was Patrick and he was a God send. My Daughter found a stir up plate on eBay by someone that had a machine it didn’t work on and my daughter snatched it up! I also purchased an inline walking foot but too much adjusting was needed and I change things around way to often to have to worry about making added adjustments. So I returned it and found a better fit for my machine You can’t fault one guy that has found things cheaper, it’s like a couple of ya has turned in to Joe Biden and it’s your way or Ukraine is the only customer that has your attention! When my customers want to spend less money on a belt I’ll send them to Walmart. They (well most) know that a cheap imitation only last just so long, like 6 weeks or less. If they are looking for patches or name tags I’ll send them to Amazon. But I’m not gonna cry over them going else where, I will tell them what to expect with a cheaper item and what to look for when it starts. most go out and seek cheaper items but if you are purposely “knocking them out of the park” it’s on you! Money will make folks do strange things, but to hide the fact that you’re doing a sale for what ever you can get is wrong

Newbie Help with Tandy Line 20 Snaps

Belt sander with 120 grit works best, and this is what I use, line 20 jig on the left, line 24 on the right -
It’s been a few days and I’m getting a gray color from a one or two second dip with scrap leather. I did use white vinegar but I will try the apple cider vinegar as well. I’m also going to use the iron sulphate to see it’s out come This is the first time I have made Vinegaroon and I’m about out of black pro dye

Quick sheath my fat patootie ! That has hours involved and it looks good to boot! You should make a tutorial on how it was made

Newbie Help with Tandy Line 20 Snaps
Doc Reaper replied to spta97's topic in Hardware and Accessories
My remedy is to sand or grind the longer post to the desired size. Use a belt sander or a dremel tool or a hand grinder. I made a jig by using small metal squares found in the hurricane straps at Home Depot or Lowe’s Get a few of these to stack together and start by placing the stem in the holes, use a small piece wood or Luanne to hold snap stems in place. Sand away only 25 percent to start. I use 3 of the squares to use on thin leather for hair bows, I will send a picture of them in the morning. Your problem is the rolled stems have a lot of material and both sides need less or they won’t go together, use anything that will grind or sand that metal away. Cloth is way thinner than leather and you may need a backing material like T-shirt cardboard or construction paper. Hobby lobby has this and scrap leather -

I just started a half gallon, and by the 3rd day it turned the leather light gray. I used paint thinner to clean it, just swished two pads in a large bowl of paint thinner and hung them up to dry. I would of used water but the drying time was too long, paint thinner takes like 7 minutes! I cut open the pads and then cut the opened pads into strips and plaved into white vinegar. Then I placed a 4 inch bolt on top so the 0000 steel wool pads didn’t float to the top. Every couple of days I’ll use a piece of wood to knock the air bubbles from the steel wool pads and I’ll check it by dunking a small piece of veg tan in it. It’s easier to spend a few dollars to make a black dye than it is to spend $45 on 32 ounces of FIEBINGS black oil dye that needs multiple coats and still leaves grayish white marks that can’t be hidden with neatsfoot oil. Fiebings must be testing for a cheaper formula, over the last 12 years I have noticed the blotches getting more and more prominent. This last year has been the worst. I did call the company and was quickly dismissed by the manager/owner. It had to be the way I was applying it. I explained that I used dye pre, denatured alcohol, paint thinner, leather cleaner, and a few other items to remove what ever might be on the leather. I realized that I was broomed, which means I’m not the only one having this problem! the Fiebings company ( like many others) is chasing a bottom line to make things cheaper. Due to the worlds “Build Back Better” plan to become a one world order = communism! I have a backbone to step up and stop this but I’m gonna need help world wide. DO NOT TURN IN YOUR GUNS !!! Folks it is time to mass with arms and use extreme force If you are one of the ones that have turned in your guns then use slings and arrows. The rich want you dead or enslaved so they can have free rein to do as they please. This includes making your children wards of the state! Im done with my rant, but I guess Vinegaroon is a way to fight NWO, lol

I almost purchased that patch machine but went with the cobra instead. I don’t have access to the machines or the time to invest in making a cheap machine better. If I did have a machine shop I’d give myself all the cool things I want

Transmission oil has a pungent smell that’s close to cat urine, I really don’t want that smell in my leather shop.

Doc Reaper replied to Tim Schroeder's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Awww crap, just when I think I can get off the short yellow bus for sewing y’all start talking about different races and shims!!!! I have a Cowboy that I have become very close with, my wife thinks the machine is “the other woman”. Somebody enlighten me on the extra races & shims please. and on top of the crud cold I have to deal with 76 year old plumbing in the bathroom while it’s raining like Noah is on his way! -
Most belt widths that measure 2 - 1 1/2 - 1 1/4 - and 1 inch were the old norm measures, some folks still use these. Then industry stepped in and greed dictates that 1/16th of an inch (something not noticed) to possibly give them an extra strap from the hide.
