Yes you can use a smooth button both sides, one with the stud and other with the socket. In some applications whats called a gypsy snap is implemented also!, whereby using original installed stud then the new gypsy stud this enables an additional layer, then follow up closing as original design. Regardless the stud can be mounted with the flat base type as you mention or others, one being the button in several post lengths for thickness. If by chance your materials are many there are different base types for studs, an example is flat or low base vs the standard, This will give you the added reach for some projects, so a handfull is a good bet! good day Floyd http://www.sailrite.com/Fastener-Selection-What-Is-a-Gypsy-Stud

Im not sure how small of stuff your doing, possibly to small for this but anyhow. I many times use tracing paper and whatever colors i have left from the pac, they make hand held tracing tools with a metal wheels. Many of these can be found at the hobby or Jo-anns kinda stores. I found these work great and are avail in "different wheel sizes" and also "different wheels" i happen to like a spur kind for the textiles it just Kicks, though a smooth one may be best for some leather projects. If you have Stohlmans tool book there on pg. 70 are similar tools as this that could be used again on larger tracings, fine things would just require an ole smooth awl of sorts. I use these with the "transfer" paper i guess they call it in several colors if needed good luck Floyd for textile : http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/401024880255?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true for maybe leather n vinyl: http://www.joann.com/dritz-tracing-wheel-6in-plastic-handle/prd10308.html

I know this "leather" sewing machine forum....but

A tough part is 60" rolls on each side of the ole needle and 30' more or less in length sure is a task. I dearly love wood tables but here this time i picked up some industrial agri. white and with a bit of hardener, my how a slick table is a blessing. One friend an ole pro in this is a southpaw and this i found was a benifit because sometimes / many one needs to stand and handle the rolls through while operating the treadle, yes with much canvas behind draggin, propped up how ever, and what a crazy task sometimes. Same guy when i figured out he was left handed and so gave him some guff why he was so good around that machine doing them big jobs like the rolls mentioned, yep you can bet he was grinnin. Floyd -

Real nice work -
I had good luck with 277 in a Cobra 4, the polyester I like but they all are pretty darn tough. Good to here your getting it dialed in, seems to be a great machine and quite the deal. for sure a good score Floyd

I havent re read the post, but will say the banana slot adjustment does not seem to me the only adjustment for this issue. The step by boring step is what i have to do because it works for me A. through Z., now finding and using the proper manual is key. Floyd

I know this "leather" sewing machine forum....but

I'm a bit interested in the marine canvas stuff one might say and so, I do sew marine canvas. Its like all the other interest here on the forum we, invest to enjoy it and with persistence learn along the way. Id like to learn about more with leather snap fasteners, there is some cool options. As of now all I know of is the marine stuff like 24 size. Scovil brand is what I use exclusively and in that nickel over brass. Following with that I would like to put the question whats some great ways to inventory them? I don't really know the best and don't want to hijack the thread here either. Though will say if I'm sitting here punching computer keys I wont enjoy data input. So in some way periodic inventory counts and I gather a separate on or off pc sheet or ledger is how many keep up but these are my current thoughts. Floyd -
Maybe my eyes but in the pic the thread looks like it on both sides of break is or has been running tite. I would check top thread path and pull off 8' of thread from the spool and keep it clear for another test. If possible have someone keep an eye on the thread in its path when moving. I have thought before my needle was fine with me scraping my finger on it while still installed, yet when removed an easier and better assessment was found, more than once! good day Floyd

Didn't possibly get a bur on the tip of the needle. I find the shuttle cap on mine sits in the draw a lot, i guess the ability to look see keeps me interested. So might take a look while some extra material is ran through. Floyd

Their big ones are the 25" and 16" then the 9" to my knowledge all the same except length. Some accessories are needed but depends on work, and Saddles do require certain task. Some members here can easily say what they use most but still cant do without. If you have a local seller close its good to check one out, these big ones have general comparison brands and so if your on the fence look at some of the Cheaney videos him and his brother use both so apples apples. I would say the 16" on the big stitcher and every saddle leather shop will not spin up the big dog for everything they have to have other machines as well. good day Floyd

I would call them back and make an offer, and fwiw the cylinder arm machines are prolly 1 to 50 ratio finding to flatbeds! Although this is not made to sew kite string size, its a workhorse for everything under. Just your friendly neighbor advice at the fence corner good day Floyd

I would not bother with that, as its probably as manufactured, all here are front mounted except the big one and its thread comes from the side. So not likely the issue, i have found most time the needle tip is ever so trashed on the tip and tearing thread. This likely comes from debris in material, leather, or just bending slightly going through material and hitting the feed dog a time or two in a twist. Floyd

I agree on the leather craft tools book from Al Stohlman, that itself opened my eyes a great deal. And for someone that used tools all my life I hadn't a clue of leather tools. Seriously this is in my mind is a no. 1 purchase, simply because references to other discussions and tools of similar style mentioned. The information listed with some black n white photos puts a, well ya know. (a picture is worth a thousand words) Besides the fact walking around the often local garage or auction sale with a bit more eye for tools. good day Floyd https://www.amazon.com/Leathercraft-Tools-Al-Stohlman/dp/1892214903/ref=pd_sim_14_3/163-2308048-2155661?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8GC1BXEKWEXH6XX9EEAN

I have seen the N used when a number follows and somehow designates a function or a set of functions the machine has been built to provide. Some of these functions i think were mechanical and in time with added air cylinders or electronics, and electronics over air to further complete operations. So maybe some of the dealers can give a clear understanding on this. pics are always good Floyd

The 92 thread or T90 should be fine with that big of a needle 22 i would think. On the guide i agree that they work best if left of center front as the needle has provisions for the thread that left side. The sewing above is a start, and i feel for ya on the computer break down thats always a major problem. good luck with it Floyd

Ya thats a great fix, I see now. The carriage tab is suppose to fit in the feed dog cover plate. good eye! Keep us posted on the new progress, always curious. good day Floyd

It looks like the Singer 153, and similar to the flatbed early 111, and typically would run a thread size max top side of 138 but I would assume smaller is much better here. Of course they always could have a custom package, im not sure on any of them options. The bobbin i believe is a g size on these and im not sure if this has a reverse option, i don't think so. good tip there Gregg good luck Floyd ps; no machine is great at all jobs and clearly reason for more machines

Changed To Thicker Thread, Hell Broke Lose!
brmax replied to Christoffer's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Looks like the thread at the check spring is not correct on the last try, and maybe the spring is set to high also. This may have happened on the last break. I would turn it by hand several / many stitches as it looks a bit like the typical not holding top thread back at startup, even though experienced operator. Floyd- 23 replies

Whats the cost of this grab box? Im trying to stick with 2 threads, big and little, 277 and 92 but i need to look at some smaller prolly I recently found Superior thread in 277 poly i like and everything is reasonable compared to Solarfix or the hi heat threads avail.

First with the photo Uwe is showing placing a drop or two of oil at the location where the bobbin carrier rides in the hook is a good first. Without knowing yet the thread age we will try to assume its ok, the size would be great also if labeled. Reason im heading this direction is we need some more base observations with your help before "i should say" put the tights on any bolts n screws. If it were me i would do as above and put thread thru feed dog/needle slot and check the thread tension through that route. Then if it was able to drop with (abstract yes) 28 grams tied to it, leave it alone for now. Or until some stitching on some material is discussed with some pics possibly. I would use some textiles or something cheaper than leather for all this checking. The oiling of all them parts can be a task for sure, it all finally goes to a catch pan so stock up. good day there Floyd

You should buy hot wings and refreshments, Cheers Im not sure which photo you mean but the first photo with the hemostats shows the hook and the bobbin case in with the bobbin tensioner on the operator side, and very fragile. Second photo may have a knob missing off the tension assembly. Hard to tell Take the pulley belt off and turn it by hand and monitor the parts moving is a bit easier, and safer. keep us posted Floyd

Great looking machine! From looking at the photo with his measure tape on the plate it looks like 22 mm from center of screw holes to needle slot center, thats about .866" vs the measure of that Cobra plate with .910" I had to the needle o.c.. Fwiw on another measure I had was; from the screw center i get .315" to the pulley side edge. Its all pretty close would need to roll/lay the tape over the curve to get accurate measure between screw holes, though they look spot on with that last photo. Just for grins that's how its measuring up good day there Floyd
-
On a Cobra here, I have a measure from the needle o.c. to the centerline of the screws of .910" inch. As I see in the other pics the screw slot is made for some adjustment side to side, I believe this may be a help because hook spacer thickness options could be used. Then again the needle bar also can be an adjustment side to side a bit for hook to scarf minor adjustment. This is on this machine and could be way different than a Ferdco. Floyd

It may be a great time to give Gregg a call over at http://www.keysew.com/ as all these brands are sold there. The option to interrupt his morning coffee is great, and a plus for business to them. The help the shop gives back on here at times is appreciated as are the others businesses. Floyd

That's a beast of a machine, it would be nice having and though a new table area assigned, you could fit some material under that arm. I am curious, so can someone give some info on what the bobbin size on that. Setup correctly I can see using that for everything really, once the needle is started on big jobs one can move over and put the pedal to the medal and just guide a 50' roll of canvas, and that's no small task. This will take up some room like 5' table I would guess at least. If your a southpaw all the better I say keep us posted on decisions Floyd
