That looks to be a piece of wool wick of sorts. Although I believe that will be covered by the retainer part with screws. This is what im remembering the hooks on my machines, but always learning some new. good day Floyd

Having a tough time finding a good used machine
brmax replied to mixmkr's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Craigs list is a great benefit for many items i found through years past. Though the compound machines close by were all a days ride. The first machine I had acquired near was at auction and the first at 5 dollars/ball park hot dog trade (lunch). The same issues reside here with sales on the CL type sites and that being the confirmation of machine expected operations. If we have to travel, "adjust" or just operator tune. Well this is at a cost or it is here, bankers dont take steaks n beer where im from. Anyway fuel and the time itself should be factored nomatter how enjoyable the drive. (Even i try that ) What is a pain is if one has to safely lodge during the trips. This is seriously costing as i btdt with dock loading schedules sometimes strictly held. Once Temps were below 0 and yes roads covered, thats nothing it took 6 hours from Marblehead to Columbus ( it sucked at 30 mph ) even then Some times good buddy nice guy still has to be in "line" no short cuts. Schedules strictly held no early dock loads, that was a new one but also my only schedule playbook. I have had one machine head shipped and it was great! Though used but never used the factory hd styrafom box was used. Subsequently typical messaging back and forth prior to sale, not just me but the seller learned important aspects. I let it ride another month maybe two no takers. I returned with another offer stipulating insurance with value of machine head. That ins. cost itself was like 150. or close to that. The prior set machine value was $50. The free insurance option when selling. This was not gonna be an interesting transaction. And reason for an updated prior to bid conference and change needed. This was honestly an education on both parties and changed after that cycle timed out. So with an all perfect machine and operations if the worst like being dropped in transport 50 bucks would not cover a new Juki much less a treasure found 1341. So we should consider some of these items as i have as many others have found in our future purchases. Maybe just this refresher can help everyone a bit. Fwiw that shipped clear across the continent by ups perfectly in factory box with plywood added both sides. A key point is ya just never know the equipment until your in front of it. And many times one needs to use another time frame to thuroughly inspect. So enjoy the hunt. And we should keep reminding ourselves this is a cost as it truly is just that a real value. good day Floyd -
Having a tough time finding a good used machine
brmax replied to mixmkr's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Ya i found a good many moons ago most business selling sew machines have more than enough machines. Really all do respect to do as you would wish is silly. Will keep an eye out for ya but prolly have to up the $ and mileage and really put the hunt coat on to weather some lookin. Fwiw i was interested in that long arm but seriously another machine i dont need. And besides i would have to stop in your place to get your help to accompany and loading it another state away! Good luck Floyd -
Just wanted to also mention I to think Steve and the others there at Leather machine co. are great with customers and their services. They have a banner add above if pop ups are turned on for this site, the ads rotate somehow and could be many good sources in your future. On another page here are Sew machine discussions, from found antiques fixed up to brand new factory use types. So welcome to the site and with any of your questions. Good day Floyd

Juki/Ferdco "Bobbin Case Spring"
brmax replied to JerseyFirefighter's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I would be interested in a part number from any of our dealers, that use these. This is new news to me on the part actually so thanks I appreciate the information. fwiw i didnt see a number in the juki manual either separating the assembly, bummer Floyd -
Sure looks like the foot is to close to me. On a side note, around the needle hole could use some careful sanding to form a smooth radius as the needle enters. It may be a good time to remove the cover to better see the hook clearence, also timing. Im gonna say ya have to remove the fee dog to best get accurate look at clearence in this situation. Good day Floyd

Juki/Ferdco "Bobbin Case Spring"
brmax replied to JerseyFirefighter's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Not familar with this part you mention. Im not finding it in a consumable parts listing for the 441. The cobra here was used and to my knowledge didnt have such spring but im always learning. I can say unless it would have a retainer some how it would hit the floor in most all shops and be history. Floyd -
I found the small cleaning kits for spray paint guns have some nice brushes with hi tolerence to liquids one normaly uses. Also in the same stores having longer engine cleaning brushes. I found through the years these extremely handy. So all you have is time, i promise the slow methods of cleaning are the wise choice. You wont put the slight bluing back on from the forgings but sure can clean it. With some "mild" liquids I would invest in a 2' x 3' shallow drip pan with a tolerent hand spray bottle to use in a vented and flame safe area. Good day Floyd

Not sure! May be a tag on the bottom side when carefully tilted back. You may have to remove the needle and use a magnifyer, yet recall how it is installed. It looks to be a clone to Juki 1181 possibly, but cannot be sure. Im sure some Singers as they all clone form them quite a bit. Possible similarities: Techsew 0302, or Reliable 3200 It may have an oil pump or may not thats noteable. Good day Floyd

Singer 111W155 presser foot adjustment
brmax replied to Ole South's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Many times because these presser feet bars and needle bars have a spring and pressure on them one needs to put a spacer under the lower one then release the tension/adjustment lock srew. This helps sometimes as they both work off each other when walking. So getting a reasonable equal foot height here sure is the ticket Floyd -
Wizcrafts Thanks for checkin up on the specs. This is sounding great and for a serious need around here, i mean tuned in to a real leather stitchers thread wants. Wow! Good day Floyd

On textiles most of the time i am 3" inches past before noticing. I find the last good stiches, lift the feet and reposition say 4 or 5 stitches back. At this time reload a bobbin with about 3" thread hanging from bobbin holder, with this method the old seam gets locked in with new and with the extra thread from bobbin the hook picks the lower thread up. (Piece of cake) On a leather project it would be critical to me and likely get striped and moved to corner. I have at least one bobbin on each with half or near the end but valuable enough for a short seam. I can say when i start a long run i try to remember to take the time and look at the bobbin amount. Its not a big problem moving material unless its a rolled up many feet long. Goodluck and keep is posted on your find Floyd

PFAFF1445 Need some help judgeing stitching
brmax replied to chasman52's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
This is the best part! i can spend others money I am sure the best move is to get one of the pre-made "box style" pulley reducers. With this use your existing motor for the time, and its So easy mounted bottom side. I mean look im spending your money and happy and confident this is a good choice for slowing that machine down. Make something sell it and get another upgrade, that's the way its suppose to work. A piece ata time Add 15.00 for v-belt choices locally along with a Mickey D's lunch. Floyd -

brmax replied to chasman52's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Hey looks great and plenty of pull on the 207, good work there. Agree one of them reducers would be the ticket for ya to put just the right slow down in the operation. So many options to consider, and yet many nice ones just a phone call away also! I sure been eyeing some ready to go types, always great ideas on the site here one can work up. again great job getting it all working again Floyd -
Them Singer trees really bloom and produce well Down Under, thats great Agri management! springs just around the corner here Floyd

Singer 111W155 presser foot adjustment
brmax replied to Ole South's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I have found the adjustments on many of these machines have a "or" require to be on a certain stitch setting. Also this may need to be changed for the next adjustment in the manual listing. I mention this only because this particular adjustment is what matters most or gets jacked up and even me doing it earlier on. I can say that because it was a stumble i had to figure out on some, re-adjust my own mess. And following up in the future found that doing each step in step with the manual was critical for this issue whatever machine i had and this seemed to worked better for me. good day Floyd -
Singer 111W155 presser foot adjustment
brmax replied to Ole South's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I'm not to familiar so I have to ask if in the 2nd photo above: right side top hole can the linkage there be adjusted as "is it on a cam" like the 15 series Juki so calling it a feed cam. Thankyou Floyd -
Now that my friend is a good eye! Great tip, please check whats mentioned
-
Its always good to prepare oneself, and with your putting it together is a great part of understanding the machine. I agree its a good thing to turn the machine over by hand a few rounds to just see how this particular one feels (as each one is a bit different ) It seem weird how smooth the machine is without the belt on, and even when on the different feeling with motor styles, like them servos have that not smooth and more like many many steps as turned vs the clutch style is smooth though more resistant when belted to machine. The thread is so cheap and a great tip having plenty in your hand taught when starting. Have fun and get to sewing Good day Floyd

Machine company with best customer service?
brmax replied to Jordanball33's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I think its a wise decision to look around ones area say 50 miles and talk with others like upholsters, leather, canvas fabricators. This just for the homework, that they may share with locating tech's or even retired tech's as there seems to be many more of them in this area. I suppose because we manufactured sometime ago! I'm in the Heartland and know of several others in Florida and its the same as here as mentioned there's just not mechanic technicians for these machines anywhere close to the numbers that was available. Far and few between actually! This small bit of info runs into I hope, the thought that each of us has to answer "how much do we want to do ourselves" and then more importantly what level we should attempt. There are task we will have to do, even in the best situations. I have found not one forum on the internet that begins to even rate on scale with this Leatherworker net. When it comes to sew machine knowledge, troubleshooting problems and the open thanks to others. Members with their interest here and many times sharing these results to better others machines and operations they learned is great. So welcome, take a look around, do some searchin and even google brings back amazing results "right back here", go figure! Floyd -
Does it happen when checking with the presser feet in raised position. good day Floyd
-
Both the presser feet should be lifting the same height as the pulley wheel top is turned toward operator. Agreed always good to check hook alignment timing. I found some are set being on a certain stitch setting and after starting there way back up. Anyway wanted to mention that sometimes with so many available presser feet to buy the lift height spec can be out the window Floyd
-
That's pretty close to 1/4" thick and should be able to sew that as normal setup really. Are you seeing the presser feet aren't stepping up enough? onto the material height. Probably need to hear a bit more to get a few more or better options for your situation. In many articles there are some extensive discussions on these Singers so welcome to the site and check out some searches, also google will sometimes pull up in short order articles here from the site. Of course being signed in does benefit with more pictures in them and some other items as pdf's. good day Floyd

I was hesitant so did not want to offer thought, so now say just a few places this may be of concern and will mention top down. The feed dog hole maybe a bit small, yet with very slow "hand wheel" it may work. 277 is like .023" + needle. So keep the post so to hear the rest of the saga on this. Floyd
