For the double loop I have used 3/32" and 1/8". It depends on the size of the project. For a wallet or smaller I use 3/32" lace and 1/8" for everything else. I assume this will be a 4 cord braid?

Hello, I just starting to teach myself braiding. I have the double loop down and figured out how to splice and end the braid early and when joining with the start. I now want to try making my own cord for wallets etc. I want to keep the dia. around 1/4"/6mm because many of the beads are sized to 6mm hole size. My question is what size braid do I use? Is it the same as the leather I use for double loop or is it different? I will want various colors. Thanks Tony

Thanks. I found a source on fleaBay that has many colors. I ordered 1 yard of 6mm as a test.

Anyone know of a good source for leather braids that would be used for biker wallets? I found some but they were sized by MM. I have no idea how that translates into what I'm looking for. The ends don't have to be finished, I found a few youtube videos that show that. Thanks Tony

Pzarkov Wallets

Just learning how to lace, what size lace did you use and how far from the edge were the holes (slits) punched? I assume the slits are the same size as the lace. How do you know when to use 3/32" or 1/8" lace? Tony -
I made some of this according to your directions. I melted 3 oz each of bees wax and paraffin, then added about 5oz of neatsfoot oil. It's still hard and stained some english bridal . What am I doing wrong?

There is a guy on Speedway Fire Indiana with the last name Turpin (Dave). Strange, 2 Firefighters both with the last name Turpin in different states.

Nice work! -
The smell bothered me at first but I close the door to the room, put a small fan in the window just before starting to dye. The smell goes away quickly. Sometimes I use a cheap mask for airbrushing/dying/glueing.

rdb - Most useful wax: Melt Paraffin, beeswax, and neatsfoot oil. Let cool. Very soft wax. Spread on edges to burnish easily, hardly any effort. Spread on top of leather finish for nice feel, and water resistance. Take a chunk and slap it on your sewing machine somewhere the thread passes. Nicely waxed thread. What are the amounts for each?

White paint and black antique... how is it done?
retiredff replied to Northlift's topic in How Do I Do That?
I learned this here so I'll pass it on. I would put 2" wide painters tape over the white or anywhere you want to protect, then cut out the areas and remove the unwanted tape, then antique, remove the tape. I use this for some 3-D stamps and it works great. Once the tape is on I use a stylus and go around the stamp or letter, then use a X-acto knife to cut out the figure. The outside tape can be removed to allow the antiquing or remove the center and airbrush what you want while protecting other parts. -
try saddle tan thru an airbrush. The problem I find is it doesn't penetrate very deep and may scuff off the dye depending on the items use.
-
I don't know about the dye but with 2:1 (reducer:Angelus paint) it's a disaster. It was way to thin so I would imagine dyes would be the same. I haven't had time to test with non reduced Angelus but my guess would be any thin liquid won't work very well. I know this because I had some reduced Angelus that was handy so I used it.

I'm just waiting on the bottles w/needle to try it out. The painters tape is also a good idea.

Thanks Dwight.

I think Tandy has a video on this. George Hurst used a stylus with a large ball on the end, cased the leather then used the stylus on the back side. I came across this one day but can't remember where. Before he did this he had cut out the outline with a swivel knife and used a beveler. From the back side he could see the outline of his tooling so he used a marker and outlined it on the back side so he could see where to put the stylus. Sorry I can't be more help.

I may try this but what type of containers do you store the dye or do you put it back in the bottle when done? If you leave it in a covered plastic container does it dry out? Tony
-
Capt. Have you tried this? It works great. I don't use it for letters so much as figure stamps or a small FireFighter Maltese. Just apply the tape, use a small stylus to outline the symbol. Then I use a small blade to cut out around the outline. This way I can remove the tape around the symbol or inside, then paint/dye... After you are done with all dying/painting I use a extra fine sharpie and outline it - Done. Great tip.

Your stitching is beautiful. What are the items you stitched in the pics? I just ordered some Tiger thread and I'm researching what size thread to use for different projects like wallets, knife sheaths etc. Mostly small items.
