I explained this exact method several months ago and was accused of being a liar and the method being "impossible" to accomplish. I am glad to see that I'm not the only one that saddle stitches like this.

I do that a lot too...a wise man once told me that's a sign of good work...wanting to keep everything you make for yourself. I have about four different field notes covers all made out of various Horween leathers and can't bear to sell any of them. I'm working on a burgundy shell cordovan wallet for myself now...but at least I knew from the beginning that I was making it for myself. lol

Best Skiving Machine For Soft Temper Leathers (And Firm Too)
25b replied to 25b's topic in Leather Tools
Thanks for the detailed, informative reply...that is good info for me to consider. Thanks again... -
I considered asking this in the "leather sewing machines" section, but as it's not about an actual "sewing" machine, I put it here... I have decided to start putting funds toward a motorized skiving machine. I will primarily be using it on soft tempered leathers (Horween Chromexcel, etc.), but would also want to be able to use it on firmer veg-tanned leather also. It would also need to work with shell cordovan without marking up the finished side. I'll be using it to make small, personal leather goods (wallets, keychains, notebook covers, etc...) I've read about bell knife skivers and this seems to be the way to go...I know they are pricy...but if they will skive the way I've seen them work in the videos I've seen, that's ok...you get what you pay for and I understand that. That's how I price my own items I make and sell. Anyway, I appreciate any thoughts from those with direct personal experience with these machines...thanks in advance for your time...

No. Send me a PM if you want to know why, but it pertains to a specific person on here. (Not you, johnggrg...someone else is the reason for this on here...) -

Yeah, I figured it out and drew up measurements. Made one out of nylon and it works pretty well. Leather one will be more difficult. Window is clear plastic. -
Right, so how old is yours because the one on amazon is $11 including shipping and is brand new...

Is it the same edition as this one? http://www.amazon.com/Leatherworking-Handbook-Illustrated-Sourcebook-Techniques/dp/1844034747/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434670020&sr=8-1

I make smaller items (watchbands, small cases, wallets, etc.) and this size will be perfect for those items.

I wax my tools (paste wax like used on cars) and it seems to help a bit...

I received mine today too...looks like very good quality. I will compare it to a couple of known sizes I have and see how it compares. Will see how it stitches soon too. Thanks again!

One problem I've read about with the lower power units is the inability of them to maintain the required temperature once you apply it to begin edging...the element cools because the heat is transferred to the edge and so the heat is inconsistent. I'm wondering how that's been compensated for on the one you've had them make for you...

Yeah, same for me...for the prices that guy wants, I will be sticking with Vergez-Blanchard for my tools.

Here's how I made mine... Nigel mentioned on his facebook page that he was going to make a detailed video with instructions for this box, but it hasn't happened yet and that was a couple of years ago I think... Anyway, I just figured most of it out from the video, but it sure would be nice to have actual explanations of what he's doing...what order to do everything in, etc. Doubt it's going to happen though. I gave up hoping for it a long time ago.

I really, honestly don't understand how someone could read that link and NOT come to the conclusion that it's satire...makes you wonder...

Goodsjapan overcharges on both their items and their shipping. I've been very happy with every order and I buy from them often. Tools are the same brands as goodsjapan, just at better prices and I usually receive my orders within about a week.

Really? Because I was thinking there were plenty enough actual, real people that died in the Oklahoma City bombing without having to make up fabricated stories about fictitious people that didn't die there.

http://www.snopes.com/glurge/music.asp ...or option 3. You can research it, find out it's completely fabricated, and then not forward it on to everyone you know.
