  1. Sadly, classes are well beyond my budget. I just bought Handmade Shoes for Men. It is much more a coffee table book than a how to. That was disappointing. Even though Skyrmes book doesn't cover making boots, shouldn't I be able to figure them out by the time I make a few pairs of shoes? I did buy a set of lasts off of eBay. They are so confusing to buy. These might even be deck or sneaker lasts. The have little to no heel height or toe spring in them. My plan is this..... Try to make a pair of shoes with this set of lasts. Then see how they fit my feet. Then try to adjust the lasts to my feet. Then make another pair. Then see how they fit. And so on.... I'm hoping with Tim's book I will be more apt at making the last adjustments.
  2. I am stepping into this same situation. Look a H.C.C.com Honourable Cordwainers Company. There is a lot of info there. A lot of which is free. There is also 1 book I have found by Tim Skyrme called "Bespoke Shoemaking". I haven't ordered it yet. It seems to contain everything we might need to know. This is a very all niche in leather work. Not much is available. But see what you can find.
  3. You can get the horse butt strips from Maverick. They are 6 bucks a foot. But each piece is a maximum of 3.5 feet.akes them easy to aquire. I really like them. Great job on that wallet.
  4. Hey Curt, welcome aboard. There is a wealth of information here. Lots of great folk.
  5. Drink ⅓ before skiving, ⅓ after skiving, and ⅓ to enjoy with your contact cement.
  6. Hahahaha, so is the end sharp, or is it like a meat clever?
  7. Nothing like this ever comes up near me. I'm always looking, but.....
  8. Thanks, but, I was asking if like both edges either side of that round corner were sharpened?
  9. Oh, the ones on his site don't show that little cutaway on the tips of the blade. I have the French model, the curved detail, and the bevel point knife. That thing is much longer in person. These will be pryed from my cold dead hands.
  10. Love how it is turning out. Keep it coming. I noticed you had a Knipschield French model knife in one pic, but what is that other headknife?
  11. The only advices I've seen for skiving is practice, practice, practice. Wait a minute, I remember someone saying something about using a bottle turned on it's side to aid in skiving. Try that.
  12. Great effort. Your miters look really good. And the cuts for your pockets look great. I think you would be happier with a 3.85 or 4mm spacing with the stitches. That thread looks a little crowded with 3mm spacing. Tap your stitches flat. It will make them present a little better. I also like the color you achieved on the leather. Contrasting thread color is always cool, but it will break a project if it isn't totally clean looking. Keep working at it, and keep having fun.
