  1. We are glad you are here, Shelby. I can't answer that silly question myself. But feel free to ask another....
  2. I think we sometimes forget that the things we are making are 10 times tougher than the stuff we can buy. Great looking kits, guys.
  3. I want that as well. Tools needed, sizing, and all.
  4. Don Gonzales just made a burnishing video. I really like his videos. I think a lot of problems and confusion arise in burnishing due to leather quality. Cheaply tanned leather is kind of tough to burnish. High quality tannage will burnish easier.
  5. Hahahahaha it looks just like you.
  6. I have had this moniker almost as long as the internet has been around.
  7. I strop my Knipschield a few times thru a project. Usually before or after a project. 2 or 3 minutes worth.
  8. I couldn't be happier with my French model Knipknife. It takes a few months, but well worth the wait. I do strop quite a bit so I don't have to sharpen it.
  9. But, he does get to semi retire.
  10. Recently, I heard that ole Larry the saddle repair guy was retiring. He used to have the Tandy franchise location until about 2014, when they opened a corporate location down the street. Well, I finally got around to stopping in, and he told me today was the last day in the shop. Everything but saddles and machines was 50% off. So, I got vol 2 and 3 of stohlman's case making books. He didn't have vol1. Several pattern packs and 2 books on lacing. I figured education was the best investment at the moment. He did say he would still work from the house. Saddle owners won't let him completely sign off. Apparently, there isn't any one else around to step in and take it on....
  11. That was a separate piece of leather. I made lines on both sides of the green leather just shy of where the binding piece would land. Then carefully applied contact cement in 6" intervals. Lay a section tap it down. Same for the reverse side. Then stitch. I made slices on the back side to help go around the corners. Someone mentioned that it was not necessary. On a turned edge that you mention, you leave your material proud of your line. Skive it. Glue it then roll it back on itself and stitch.
  12. I have finally decided that what people were telling was right. I was wrong. I have a pro burnisher set up on an electric motor running at 3450 rpm. It is too fast. I have a smaller 3 speed motor but haven't looked into how to get it set up.
  13. Nice bag.
  14. Good thing I haven't bought a sewing machine yet. I had no idea turning the wheel backwards could damage it.
  15. @Aven, I did see laughing crows preview for his boot tutorial. I seem to remember his price wasn't astronomical. So, I may be able to afford his video. I just made my mind up to try and make some after my last work show purchase. With shoes and inserts I spent 200.00 on a pair of redwings that still don't fit quite right. As far as the lasts I have, I don't think I need much of a heel anyway. I broke both of my heels back in 2010 and really can't wear anything with a lot of height. Normally I wear an 11½ wide and these lasts are a 12. They seem wide enough, so I will probably be okay. The redwings I just bought had to be 12 EE. As for actually building a pair of shoes, I have to finish the rearranging of my studio. It is almost halfway done, but Saturday work is really keeping me from getting it done. Thanks for the insights.
  16. Man Tim, you have a real talent for this stuff. I am always so impressed with the things you make. What an artist?
  17. I would like to be, but alas, I am far from the first guy in Louisiana to be able to afford one. Speaking of which, do we have a proposed MSRP yet?
  18. Yuck! I hate dark beer. I like clear lagers....... Take that back, I like dos xx lager and Modelo Especial (pilsner). You can keep all other beers. Even most of the free ones.
  19. Thanks @CowboyBob
  20. @CowboyBob, is this for sale yet?
  21. Most use a wing divider for the stitch line. An edge creaser is purely cosmetic unless you are using it as a border line for stamping and tooling. Check out Amazon for this book. This will give you a cheap look into what you may actually have to buy based on the type of leather work you wish to pursue.
  22. Sadly, classes are well beyond my budget. I just bought Handmade Shoes for Men. It is much more a coffee table book than a how to. That was disappointing. Even though Skyrmes book doesn't cover making boots, shouldn't I be able to figure them out by the time I make a few pairs of shoes? I did buy a set of lasts off of eBay. They are so confusing to buy. These might even be deck or sneaker lasts. The have little to no heel height or toe spring in them. My plan is this..... Try to make a pair of shoes with this set of lasts. Then see how they fit my feet. Then try to adjust the lasts to my feet. Then make another pair. Then see how they fit. And so on.... I'm hoping with Tim's book I will be more apt at making the last adjustments.
