When I was living in Europe, and learning to wrench over there, I was introduced to Beta tools. All German made, and super nice. I really line the grips and the quality is second to none. Dealers are hard to find, but they have a tool for dang near everything. http://www.peerless-betatools.com/products/details/1294-3X100-SCREWDRIVERS-HEADLESS-SLOTTED

Uwe, on an unrelated note, I think your camera work is really well done. Can I ask what you're using?

A new, heavy duty, walking foot, zigzag machine for ~$3000 Au? I don't know about Australia, but in the US, something like that would be at least twice that price. -

It's called the Inverse Dunning-Kruger Effect. The Dunning Kruger effect is when people don't know how stupid they are. The INVERSE Dunning Kruger Effect is when people don't realize how GIFTED they are. It's a very odd, but very real logical trap that the Dunning Kruger Effect is it's OWN opposite. It's like the absolute value of -1, or |-1| =1. So, the things that many of us take for granted can be baffling to others. And vise-versa. -
What RockyAussie said. As a Cowboy dealer, I can tell you that the CB-4500 is NOT the kind of machine you need. NONE of the 441 clones are going to do what you need. You need something with a very small foot and a very small needle to end-of-arm distance to make the small edge margin stitches. And ideal machine for this would be a Post-Bed machine with a Power Roller Foot. I think Bernina makes something like that.

I've been a keen follower of economics for years, and to my understanding, these numbers are closer to the true hourly wage. Exactly. There are simply some jobs that you don't accept. I stopped repairing purses years ago because ladies would balk at paying $40 to repair a $500 purse. Not only that, but they will expect a purse that looks brand new when it's done, a complain loudly when it's not. That's why there are very few places anymore that repair purses.

Acrylic does not live long if the edges are fine. It just crumbles too much. Delrin will work much better but you'll still get only a couple hundred pressing. Magnesium is next with about 5000 pressings, followed by copper (10,000) and brass (20,000+).

We're in Dallas if you want to see the 3200. -
This is usually done with a Bernina industrial post bed roller feed machine. This particular type of has a very close edge margin designed into the machine. It makes these types of seams easy.

Nicely done, Chris. A very good idea, and something that I think I might start adding to the 3200.

Cowboy CB4500 Outsole stitcher
SolarLeatherMachines replied to Singermania's topic in Shoes, Boots, Sandals and Moccassins
I have a couple of sets here in Dallas, but haven't really had a chance to play with them. I'm not sure at this point, but it looks like the feet are a little shorter than the standard harness feet or fabric feet. So, they'll hover a bit off the needle plate. Since most soles are pretty thick, this should present no real issue in practice. I need a real boot maker to bring me a sole to try it out. -
Floss your hole with Mitchell's abrasive thread #51. It will smooth out the edges and enlarge the hole slightly. It a long time mechanic's Pro Tip. All of the machines here at Solar are flossed like this to prevent burrs and chafing. https://www.amazon.com/Mitchell-Abrasives-Abrasive-Aluminum-Diameter/dp/B0034G67RW/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1490371016&sr=1-1&keywords=mitchell+abrasive+51

Damaged sewing machine

Nice work, Bob! -
Had a guy walk into the store last week and challenge me with a saddle skirt and real sheeps wool. Said "I want to see you sew this skirt on the 45, cuz I don't think it'll do it!" I told him that I wasn't a saddlemaker, but that I'd give it a shot. After I was done, he was real quiet, and then said "I never saw the stiches look so nice." I said, "Well, sewing leather is kind of what I do...." Gotta know how to sew to build a machine right. 'Course, my BSME prolly helps a bit. I should have had him video it. Did you get your thread yet?

Cowboy 4500 / Cobra Class 4 Questions
SolarLeatherMachines replied to JeffGC's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
1. Many dealers and owners don't install the thread guide because it breaks off really easily. The machine is indifferent to it, but the thread guide is a little sensitive. You might want to talk nice to it. 2. The best method is the method that works for you. -
