  1. I’ve been told to “open the pores” of the leather before dying. I’m confused on what this actually means. Do I water soak it, use just a little water, like when I’m stamping, or do I use oil? I’ve been told quite a few ways. It seems to change not only person to person, but project to project. I had a project that I oiled one part after dying, and other parts before dying and I got what I feel is wildly different effects. Can you explain what is meant by “open the pores”?
  2. All one can do is try, ask questions and then try again. I’m sure the pony people would love new tack, and can explain any problems they are having. Hands on is the best training.
  3. Lust, lust, lust, droooooolllll! What a wonderful wallet! I come from very artistic people and the gene missed me pretty hard. My hand stayed in 6-8th grade sadly. Amazing!
  4. OH! What a wonderful old girl! I have my greatgrandmother’s 1920? Maybe 30’s Singer. Maybe 40’s? It’s electric, knee pressure advance. It’s buried under boxes in the basement. I’m a little gun shy I guess. I haven’t plugged her in for 12 years or more. I’m sure any oil is gone, and I need to get a leather needle. I have sewn through 5 layers of denim with her, but still, I would hate to hurt her...
  5. Goodness, sorry if I sounded snappy. I was just asking. That makes a lot of sense to not be changing thread sizes and colors out all the time. Bobbins. The eternal enemy...
  6. Yum. I’m heading into a long winter, for Nebraska, anyway. That sounds lovely.
  7. Cool, I’ve heard a lot about Wicket & Craig. How are their prices for shipping to the US?
  8. Now, this is a situation I have seen before. Many of the guys I work with have multiple sewing machines. Do you really need more than one machine? Or is this just tool junky behavior?
  9. Oh, and waterproofing! Baby wipes, water bottles, medicines, juice boxes! They all leak eventually. If she’s carrying for the kids AND everyday life, she needs a waterproof liner or section. Baby food spills, powdered milk spills...she needs waterproofing and another liner she can just take out and throw into the washer. Life gets messy.
  10. Is your buffalo stiff enough to hold its shape? Ours is pretty soft... I speak as a woman that used to carry a full bottle of pepto, a wrench set, several note books, etc in my pur...okay small duffle bag. It is a screaming pain when you are digging around for stuff and your purse is fighting with you. Maybe some bag stiffener if it’s too floppy? And our buffalo is very heavy as well. I wouldn’t use it for a purse. I think 4-6oz is a good weight. Not too heavy on the shoulder and still thick enough to stand up a bit. You may still need to add bag stiffener once it gets beaten up a bit, but I don’t think I’d use much lighter then that. It might be too soft to stand well. I know most purses go for butter soft and floppy, but if you have to carry a lot of stuff around, well, let’s just say that after I get my Dad’s hat done, I’ve got some red latigo I am REALLY excited about.
  11. It depends on whether I have thick braided thread or the hemp thread. Thick thread I usually hammer down, I feel that the thinner hemp thread is pretty flat already.
  12. Does the ( I’ve forgotten how to spell applicay, the brain, she is melting) on the front, for a purpose, or is it just for pretty? Because it is. Beautiful color, as well.
  13. That’s a great idea! You always see ponies and horses at fairs and stuff. That would be great experience.
  14. The corners look like seeders. Maybe a straight tool, or a heavy use of a ball point stylus, the a seeder at each corner? Pretty though.
  15. I worked as grounds keeper for an apartment complex. It was like walking in a park. I picked up branches from all over it, pine, apple, maple, mulberry and oak. I’m pretty sure that this is maple or mulberry. Another tree was kind of strange, it had bark that sloughed off leaving 3 different color patterns, so the remaining inner bark was different colors and it’s berry like seed pods were hard and nasty to step on all winter. But, in the spring, they just fell apart and spread everywhere. If anybody knows what I’m talking about, I would really like to know that tree’s name. It is. I made it for my mother, she’s starting to fall a bit. I cut the bottom so that the branches kind of form a tripod for stablity. Then I smoothed it with some sand paper, but none of what I had really smoothed it as well as I liked. Then one day, I was working on my nails and I said , “Eh, why not?” Ruined the sanding block from Sally’s Beauty Supply, but man! This is the softest stick I’ve ever made! No sealer, Mom doesn’t like them, she says they get sticky. And she has been able to test it on it’s intended prey. Nice and firm, and that dog hasn’t bothered her again on her walks! I was hoping to find a point that I could use at the base, something that would just screw into the wood if I made a hole, that I could put a rubber bit on come spring so she was ice and mud ready. I couldn’t find one, maybe I just didn’t look hard enough or in the right places. Where would you go?
