Thanks mike, I did hammer the stitches down I think the leather looks like that as a result of dull pricking irons and maybe to tight on the thread tension while hand sewing. And yes I had to figure out a way to hold the bag while I was stitching it together it was quite the task lol. Lots of lessons learned though. thank you @Retswerb the leather is some black vegtan I got from @Springfield Leather Company that was on sale a while back. Not sure of the tannery and I believe it was 4/5oz

First off let me state that this was my first attempt at making a bag of this sort I usually make wallets lol Anyways I was asked by a customer to make a bag large enough for study material/books and some clothing items. My original idea was to make a tote with handles but along the way ended up deciding to make it a shoulder carry with a flap closure in case of unfavorable weather. So I basically Bit off more than I could chew and didnt manage my time well enough and ended up pulling an all-nighter to deliver on the deadline. Great learning experience and I realized I really like making bags. comments, critiques and questions always welcome. Thanks for looking !!

New Wallet
CastleLeatherWorks replied to CastleLeatherWorks's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks @jcuk hahah yea ive sold a few things. I actually made a similar wallet on customer request that would hold 8 cards. I really liked the size and way it came out so I decided to make one for myself. Except his was made fully out of alran sully goat skin. I wanted to try and be fancy so I made the outside of mine with the EPI leather. Still have mixed feelings about it but it came out pretty nice over all. i do like my old wallet it started to patina nicely but it was originally my prototype design and wasn’t fully lined and so the outside wall was really thin as I use 1-2 oz leather. So it started wrinkling on the bottom edge which I didn’t like so much -
Been a while since I posted any of my works.. Here is a wallet and keychain I've made for myself it was time to retire my prototype wallet made out of chestnut buttero. New wallet is EPI leather in navy color for the outside and inside is Alran sully in marine color. Stitching is black waxed linen thread at 3.38mm spacing done with French style pricking irons. Edges are sanded then burnished and sanded again with 3/4 coats or vernis edge paint in marine color. thanks for looking !!

Biker Wallet

Are you gifting this to one of the members or do you plan on doing so? most clubs aren't keen on non members flying their colors or logos. im sure you know this... good job on the wallet btw it looks nice. -
Run it thru the washing machine with a load of whites.. then 2-3 heavy coats of black sharpie. Finish with your kiwi leather conditioner

just $0.02 but the stitching doesn't look horrible. I mean to say that this is unacceptable for a product you would sell.. but to me it looks like operator error or maybe you weren't guiding the leather back properly or you tried going to fast. I don't know your experience level with sewing machines but have you had anyone with more experience than you try to troubleshoot the problem? I do not own a sewing machine btw. just food for thought.

Welcome back !! I really like your wallet. definitely inspired by Louis V...I have been contemplating ordering some Montbelle leather to make some projects and I’m sold now...I have never used that kind of leather but I like the look a lot also. How is the temper on the montbelle leather and what weight did you use ? Is the inside pocket lined ?

great idea ! I think this is the only way to ensure where my stitches will land. do you use some sort of software to make your patterns? adobe illustrator or the like ? thank you !

Crossbody Book Bag

No worries.... in the US we measure the thickness of leather in ounces. So the leather you used would be around 5/6oz. thanks again for sharing your work ! -

that's a great looking bag. Exceptional work my friend what type of leather did you use and what weight ? -
just a shot in the dark here but i would assume you would use some form veg tan and wet mold it. then a couple of layers of contact cement to secure it to the tank. OR if you wanted to keep it removable you could also wet mold it with a lip that wraps around the back which when tightened by the screw on the front would pinch the leather between the tank and plate.

I currently don't own a sewing machine and hand stitch my items. I am however in the market for an entry level machine that wont break the bank, Thank you for the compliment!

I mainly work with 2/3.5oz leather and I have been using a $12.99 from amazon WUTA .08mm edge beveler and it works a hell of a lot better than my $30.00 Craftool size 0 from tandy. Im waiting on a berry king 00 from rocky mountain hopefully the thinner nose will allow for better edge engagement on the thinner leathers. on a side note all these tool companies need to figure out a universal sizing system because it seems everyone is different and just adds to the confusion when getting started.
