I'm getting in to covering old boxes in leather, but some of the boxes are very damaged so I need to find somewhere to buy wooden boxes. Does anyone know any good places to look?

Ok i mostly am either doing wood projects or leather projects. But im wanting to start mixing and matching. Do some leather overlays onto wood boxes and maybe even try some exotic leather like snake or stingray over wood grips for my 1911. Ive read up on bonding the 2 materials together and glue selections for best most permanent bond. For the pistol grips Andrews leather in florida who makes some really nice leather over wood pistol grip panels has a great youtube video showing how he does his grips. He uses edgekote in his video to finish the edge. My question is does edgekote seal the edge up between the wood and leather? The edge where leather stops and wood starts wood be my biggest concern of starting delaminating. How to seal the edge to give best chance of it holding up over time. Could you resin coat the entire project once done to make sure everything stays one piece?

Little King Goods posted this stitching pony on his IG and had to order one. It came from Korea in about 2 weeks a little pricey for what it is, it is very nice and very portable. I am going to put some leather on the jaws love this design I think I might have to reverse engineer this in walnut or oak.

Hello all, First off, Ill start by pointing out that I am not a shoe/boot maker and have never made a pair. I have absolutely no experience in this field although I have been leather crafting accessories for a few years. That said; I'd like to take a stab at making a rough pair of boots. I'm not really interested in learning how to carve a pair of lasts out of wood at this point as it seems that this is an art of its own. Rather, I'd like a more simple way of making a pair of lasts. I've done a bit of reading about using a pair of old boots/shoes to pour some sort of resin/foam into to get a rough last shape out of, then shaping it. The problem is, the only information I've found about a substance which can be nailed into without cracking is this smooth-on foam #25. Which apparently is dense and rigid enough to put a nail into, but flexible enough to avoid cracking, according to a user in another thread. This foam used in combination with a thin layer of bondo apparently will do the job for a couple of pairs of boots/shoes. Problem is, this foam is $185 a gallon. This is completely unreasonable for me as I'm just doing this as a hobby. I also wonder if this foam would be rigid enough to stretch the leather over without altering the shape of the "last". Is there some other resin or plastic combo or otherwise I could use to achieve a "nail-able" and rigid material? Could I just melt some recyclable HDPE? Or would that deform the shoe I plan on using to pour the substance into? I need something that won't hurt my wallet, and is hard enough that I can form leather with it, but not so rigid that it would crack when nailed into. I really hope someone has some experience with this! Thanks again, Zayne

I came across this and found it amusing had to post it. I wouldn't ever even think about putting a 1/2 of MDF under a industrial sewing machine or metal. Could be very dangerous. Enjoy the video.

I'm a Furniture Maker looking to glue faux Shagreen leather to a substrate. I routinely use Water-based Contact Cement (3M or Formica brand) when gluing Plastic Laminate (ie. Formica) or Paperback Veneer to Melamine -with a sanded surface. The answers I've seen to "How to glue leather to wood" mentions using a Solvent-based Contact Cement (Masters- as an example). My question: Solvent-based VS. Water-based Contact Cement- which is best to glue leather to Melamine with a sanded surface. Thank you

Hey all, I have a dumb question. I am trying to get a better burnished edge, I think what I need is to glue some canvas to one of my wooden burnishers for a dremel and use that, rather than doing it by hand. Can any of you tell me what kind of glue to use? and should I overlap the canvas so there are no gaps or just glue it seem-to-seem? Right now all I have is the green weldwood contact cement, some wood glue, and some of that white water based elmers glue. Thanks! Zayne Thanks!

It has been a while since I poster here since I have mostly been focusing on wood working. The other day I decided to do a little crossover project and make a wood and leather messenger bag. The gussets are made out of Ambrosia Maple. The leather is 5/6oz. Overall dimensions are roughly 12x15. This is a project for me, but I've already had a lot of interest in it. I may make a few more.

So Windrider's posts on making boxes lit a fire under me, since they coincided with me fiddling around with something at work. When cutting moulding on a miter saw, you end up with triangle shapes. If you get four of them and put them back to back, the rabbet of the moulding ends up pointed out and makes a snazzy lid! This is my first attempt, I happened to have some burgundy latigo scrap and one of the lids that went nice with that color, so I went at it. I'm frankly astounded that it turned out as well as it did, since I completely guessed at the height/angle of the curve for the sides. I cut the edges at an angle (which was a challenge) and saddle stitched them together, then burnished all the edges. The lid pops right in but not so snug that it's a pain to get on and off. Size is 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" by 2" tall.

Summer is here and I'm in need of a fly swatter, so I thought about making something like the one in the included picture I found by googling leather fly swatter. I would like to hear what you think is the right type of rivets, or other kind of fasteners for making a swatter like this? I would like the rivets to be flush on the wood side so that they don't damage anything. I was thinking using Chicago screws and counterbore in the wood, but would like to know if anyone knows if there are better and/or simpler ways?

What's up guys- I'm in the middle of designing a prototype and I have come to a point where it is not possible to proceed without certain machined/fabricated parts being made. I am looking for services to complete the request. I have complete detailed plans and specs available to share, that I am attaching here. There are three components of the part- a metal piece about 1x1x1'' that I believe will be constructed from sheet metal, a flat wood piece that should by stained plywood, and screw posts for holding the leather. None of these parts I would assume would be available. I am of course willing to pay for the services rendered. Any ideas guys?
