Depends on what you want to sew. Maybe a patcher sewing machine like a Singer 29K is the better option. Most of the 29K have a hand wheel that you can move from the right side to the front side. I think it is more comfortable for the Boy Scouts to sew with But the 29K has of course it´s limitatations. Maybe this video gives you an idea

In case it will work you will most likely need a complete new hook saddle an new bobbin case opener and a new hook assembly and maybe some more bits and bites + you have to disassemble parts of your machine or ask a sewing machine mechanic to do that. This will probably cost as much as a used machine with larger bobbin. I also had this idea for my Singer 111 but dropped it very soon.

The advantage of the 45K89 is that it has reverse (the 133K has no reverse) and has a heavier handwheel which gives the needle more puch but the long arm of the 133K is also quite nice and as CowboyBob said there are more 133K (or 132K) parts are availlable than for the 45K. Check with College Sewing UK - they have a good ranke of parts. At the end it is your decision.

Have you tried the forward and reverse lever? Better post a picture of your machine - not sure if it has been modified in any kind. Look for a Pfaff 134 or better Pfaff 234 manual - it should give you some ideas.

Seems it has a feeding mechanism and a walking foot - Looks like a 133K17 but not 100% sure - If you have the space then I´d choose the 133K. I´d test sew either machine before you buy one of them How much are the machines?

You wrote 133K13 - and this is a darning machine. Post some pictures if you are unsure.

W/o having seen the machines and not knowing how they are set up I´d choose the 45K89. It has a reverse and some 45K accessories like feet and so are available. The 133K13 is NOT a leather sewing machine - this is a darning machine - It has no feeding mechanism!!!! The 45K89 has a jump foot system (if it has not been modified over the years) so if you have the chance to post some pictures please do.

When your clutch motor runs at 3000 rps you will not feel the difference of just a smaller motor pulley. Even 1400 rpm motor is too fast most of the times. It often is a question of how well you can control the clutch. Some motors have smooth clutches and some go from zero to 3000 rpm by moving the pedal just a tiny bit. electrathon is right - I´d rather buy a new servo motor. That will save you time (hunting for parts + putting together everything, move the motor sideways and fiddling around with 2 V-Belts in correct length) and the servo even saves electricity and it is less noisy. When you need more punching power on the needle then you later can add a speed reducer even to the servo motor - just for the case.

Thats true, thats what I did with the machine were I took off the jump or flip back foot assy. (oh - forgot to add the pictures) I installed a presser bar of a 133K3 from College Sewing - worked w/o problems.

Just dug out the jump foot system - this actually is from an Adler but thats approx. the parts that is missing on the pictures 45K31. Not sure how Singer made it back than but the bottom end of the Adler Presser foot bar is rounded w/o screw hole and not squared with screw hole as the standard bar so it only "could" accommodate a roller foot but no standard foot.

For sure a nice work and It´s great when you have such opportunities. I guess you will put a clear coating on the surface, right? Anyway - for me it has a bit too technical look I personally prefer wood. But it still a nice work!

Look at that Jimi "Mr. 45K" has the answer You actually can remove the jump foot sytem and replace the presser foot bar for adding regular presser feet or just add a roller foot instead. Seems thats what they dd decades ago. Result is that the machine is less nosy. I once did that on an Adler and I still have the foot system so I can take some pictures later.

Well, but $300 for this machine is not a bargain considering the condition and that you have to drive 1100 mls. Seems you also need a bobbin winder, a thread stand and maybe a new table or stand. This stand is from a 29K and has a pretty lightweight balance wheel for a heavy machine like this. Not sure if I would buy the machine....

very small pictures - can´t see enough.... The thread take up lever is on the left side and goes through the face plate, it is not on the front! I think it is present - see red circle. Thats the position where it should be when the lever is up. You are right, some do not have a feed dog (darning machiens) but this one has a roller foot and a roller foot makes no sence w/o a feed dog so I´d assume it has one!

Has an unusual shaped and flat throat plate and the roller foot looks a bit different but thats maybe because of the pictures. Do you have a picture from the backside? Are the pre and main tension present? How much does the seller ask for it?

early 1900´s built as it seems - maybe they just made a few of this subclass. How is the rest of the machine looking

The Adler 48 is comparable with the Singer 17 Maybe you can try needles for the Singer 17 which were system 16x1 / 16x2, 16x21 / 16x 22 and 16x46 / 16x64 (left is cloth and right is leather) I also took two shots from an old and up to date Adler Manual I hope this helps to compare the sizes

well - for just a bit more you can buy a brand new machine from Toledo with warranty and so forth. In this case I´d rather buy a new one instead a used one of unknown origin for about the same price.

I don´t know REX machiens but I´d assume it is a good machine but personally I´d rather buy a needle feed machine for light leather work. Seems this one has top and bottom feed but no needle feed. If I were you I´d test sew it with the materials I want to sew before I buy it. $200 sounds like a fair price but depends on the condition.

an alternative thread could be Aman SYNTON or SERAFIL (same thread afaik - SYNTON is the old name) in colour 1002 or 1003.
