holsters on saddle bags
Rayban replied to Rneel's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I like your work, you seem to have the same interests I do...although I've yet to make my first gun holtser, after the first of the year I will start on it.... I was looking at my "Packing Gun Leather" book last night and those saddlebags with the holster were very popular back in the day...pommel bags too. -
Thanks YAK...sounds like something I can use.

Seems like I've seen that one b4, it was refered to as a "Sunday saddle"?? Beautiful!! -
I like the color of the bag, and if given the choice I would agree with your sister in the thread color. But black thread does not deter from the bag in my opinion. Years from now, and I'm sure that bag will still be around, there is no telling what color that bag will appear to be with exposure to the elements, both human and natural. When you re-list it, call it Texas Longhorn orange and see what happens!!

Johanna, I just now found "your story" and quite a story it is.. This site has quickly become one of my favs...I just pound on leather as a hobby and for beer money. I've been a little afraid of making it be too much like a job.... But regardless, this site gives me a daily dose of inspiration, not to mention the fine folks I'm encountering along the way. Thanks for all you do.... Rick

I agree on the gussets, and I look forward to seeing the bag when you're finished with it! Thanks

reproduction holster
Rayban replied to Don101's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Don, I believe it was you that offered several patterns on one of these posts...can't ever find one when you're looking for one...do you have a pattern for this particular one? Also, is this pattern meant for a particular gun, or can it be molded to fit others, kinda like some knife sheath makers do? Thanks, I'm planning on building my first one, probably after the Christmas madness around here, so doing my due diligence research... -
Timbo...I hear that Barge is good stuff. I use good ole drug store bought contact cement and it seems to do a good job on the small projects I usually do. Next time you go to a tack or Western store take a look at the leather, and especially belts. You'll see that the good belts are almost all lined and nothing special was done around the holes. Headstalls too. Hopefully some of the gun leather "experts" will weigh in on this.... I hope to build a holster/belt rig this winter for a 357 my Dad left behind recently, and I plan to line the belt with either 3/4 oz. tooling leather, or maybe latigo. I'll be doing some research in that area.

I enjoyed your web-site, you do great work. Welcome to the forum.

Timbo....I'm thinking that if you have to ask how much it's worth, it means to me that you haven't sold many of these...yet. But you will, you do nice work. If it fits the gun like it should, and the belt fits your friend like it should, I believe it's well worth $150. I always say, this rig is gonna be around LOOOOOONG after that $150 is gone... My opinion, as long as you've asked, the billits should also be lined. RG

Mike, the length of the stitching doesn't look consistent, are you using a stitching wheel? Even if the leather is thin, you can still use the groover to lightly mark the line you want to stitch, then go over it with the wheel. On work like you show, I usually punch maybe 4-6 holes at a time with the awl...sometimes just one hole at a time, depends on the work being done. And I've never understood what is so crucial about not putting the awl down..is it just a speed thing?? I remember reading Al's instruction on NEVER PUTTING THE AWL DOWN..I'm not on the clock when I tinker with leather, so I have all night.....How you suppose to sip on a beer without putting the awl down??

I agree with you K-Man, that to copy someone's work and call it your own is not in good faith...but I also believe the point TEX is making is that unless you DO have a patent on it....your work is fair game once you show it to all on the internet..or anywhere else for that matter. -

K-MAN...am I reading you correctly??? If I see a post of an item that I think is pretty cool and I say..."I think that I'll try making one of them there..." will that makes me unethical?? I just want to make sure I understand what you're saying...maybe I should take a shower and come back to read it again... -

I guess you can laugh at me too cuzz I don't get it....you don't carve horses facing to the right or what?? I have a horse, and I see him facing that way all the time... Other than that it looks to me like a nice clean job....if you hate it that much, send it to me!!

Candy, I would also be interested in those clips. I looked them up on William-Henry once and I believe the min. order was 100...that I would NOT be interested in...thanks.

Great work and good idea. I bet they will sell fast How wide are they? I'm guessing 2"...am I close? -
Mike...to answer your question (don't mean to highjack this thread) I get pretty generous with the 4/5oz. I use for the top surface (8/9oz. for the btm.), so yes, it looks like a big fat "U". I spray paint the shoe before I wet-mold it, else it may rust through the 4/5oz...it's happened to me already and you don't see it happening till you're almost finished with the project....after the wet-molding has dried, you can see that you have plenty leather around the shoe to trim off after your done stitching. Hope this helps.
