looks classy.... ya trail, error and then prebuilding more and more in your head will help with the order of assembly and stitching operations... I am sure we have all and still will stitch ourselves into a corner at some time or another. I would also always glue the main seem on a holster especially if it is going to see real action. with pre made holes you can still glue as long as you use awls or big needles to align the holes and I also use wax or tracing paper between layers and pull it out as things are aligned and ready to bond. Looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.... hope there is a cartridge belt coming with it!

Nice clean work. -
Recognizing this is an old but excellent thread I do have a question I hope someone can address: I get that the counter of the ground seat is essentially up to the art of the maker with a few "standard" but has anyone developed a method to somehow capture the riders shape and then sculpt the ground seat for the closest contact and comfort possible? I am.thinking more.for riders who have little or no built in seat padding on their butts and inner thighs etc. Thanks if you can help....

How I make crocodile skin leather belts

Brian, As has been said thank you so much for ting the time to share all your various processes. Your purpose built machinery and aids are a amazing as your products! Thee double angled belt sander is just brilliant. -
I already buy what different use hardware I can from Harness Hardware but they don't specialize in saddle parts. Look around a lot and best selection/pain price point for me was Hill Saddlery. Is there a Canadian source with wide selection I am missing? Found one or two out west but not a lot of selection.... Any suggestions fellow Canucks?

Fancy Farrier Aprons

Wow great work. I love the matching recurve on the side pockets and the backing piece. Nice touch! -
Okee dokee then i will just go with short round as in Stohlman's encyclopedia. Thanks all.

Saddlebags sir I would like to know if anyone has heard that specific term (which may be a British Columbia term where they are from) and could show me what it means to them. I do know it was used in the context of the skirts being shorter. I can do shorter but wondered if it had any other particular design elements such as recurves or depth to length ration etc.

Some suggested i replace the old one with this style and i know its short skirt but can't find any specigic reference to that style. Is it like cutting saddle? Anyone have a picture with the lines i can see?

Easy Fit Saddle seat leather style
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Saddle Construction
Thanks so much. I will let you know if I replace in kind or figure out something with the seat leather.... and wreck the whole deal real good! -
I am restoring a saddle where the seat leather does NOT come all the way forward past the forks to cover the front of the bars, the drop down in a curve from the cantle to the inside of the forks and there is a small front "corner" jockey for lack of a better term which returns back under this drop in the seat leather and the skirts are pocketed over the bar ends. I have only found pictures of few saddles like this and they all seem to be made but Easy Fit. Is this just their style, little trade mark, or is it to save leather costs and ease construction time? In Stolman's volume 1 on the page introducing fenders there is a sketch like it on the top right as he talks about in the earl y 1800's etc... is it just an older approach that they are still using? and would the rear jockey ever have come all the way to the front under the seat leather? I am not planning to replace the seat leather so I seems to be stuck following the same pattern, not that it looks horrible, but sure doesn't seem to be the norm... Its built on a Ralide 1500 tree not that it matters to this question I suspect. Just curious about this approach and why or why not one would use it. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Stumbled onto a woman selling her husbands cobbler shop equipment in Hudson Bay Sask... and stumbled onto her daughters construction and shipping company... the coincidences led to this old beauty being crated shipped and now in my shed awaiting a good clean... and it is complete head with wax box and accessory box on the back side... 2 shuttles 4 bobbins loads if original needles... and complete stand... AND bobbin winder!!!!!... serial number puts it circa 1915 and agency marking on the wheel indicates made for Canadian Market. Gentlemen actually waxed all the time and the entire machine and winder is waxed... so not rusted! I have a good friend with a vapour blasting set up for engines... total degrease/grime and zero dimensional change... so that is where this baby is headed... complete tear down and clean... someday... for now safe and secure.
