  1. Look up Azmal .. Put the following line into Google site:leatherworker.net azmal
  2. If you are going to do much steel..look at CO2 lasers ( a 40Watt unit will start at around $350.00 USD..check Aliexpress ) ..or at least 7.5 Watt and upwards in diode..15 Watt would be better.
  3. No public allowed ..atelier is attached to the house..( had retail shops and ateliers before..PITA )..now..since 10 years or more..online sales and some limited wholesale only. Design work..meetings ( I don't like meetings, or consults..so charge very highly for them per hour, so as to dissuade them ) at their premises or external venues only..or via internet and or phones. All any of us has ultimately is time..many customers like to waste it..if you give them the opportunity..so I don't give them that opportunity.. No market stalls, Ren fairs etc..last market was St Tropez over 25 years ago.., decided to wholesale to the luxury shops on St Tropez instead..cut out the potential time wasters..get paid COD..no cash..no product.. Nowadays..if the computer behind me ( which is reserved only for notifying of sales ) "rings" a sale ( someone's credit card got authorised on a site ) ..then the item is sent..They can spend as long as they want "thinking about it"..before they authorise their card..While they are doing that..I don't know that they exist, nor do I have to..I can be on the beach, or asleep, or working, or painting, sculpting or reading a book, watching the clouds etc.. We have liability insurance ( obligatory) ..but no one ever gets near enough for it to be activated. Yep..been there..headaches just wondering what they might do or not do ..so haven't had any for 25 years now.
  4. Question of budget.. Ebay has a lot more money to spend on ultra high spec servers ,and coders, devs etc than Leatherworker.net does.. Quotes..means match exactly what is within the quotes..But Ebay, Google and others silently add in a.. return close matches etc ..which means using a lot more processing power , CPU cycles, server Ram, more complex coding, more leccy etc.. Given that on some days, at any one moment, there may be simultaneously up to 500 people on here..all of whom are being served images, some of whom are commenting ( takes computer resources to allow comments and accept uploaded images etc, and to serve pages ) servers are expensive to run..The more resources that they use, the more expensive they are to run..Ebay et al make a lot of gross profit, their net ( after paying for infrastructure and so on..servers etc..is pretty good too ) ..This board runs commercial software ( it has to be paid for ) and so does the server..They are not cheap..The site is not making Ebay kind of profit margins..search with bells and whistles cost more..both in "up front" costs and in server resources.. If a large number of the people using the site paid..then Johanna might be able to afford to upgrade just a little on the server AFAIK the forum software is the latest version of it..meanwhile..you are getting it all for free..and complaining that you don't think that it is fit for purpose?.. On any of my sites you'd have just earned an IP ban.* with no warning.. I know sites where the annual membership is in the hundreds of dollars ( and in some cases thousands ) to access anything other than a few 'taster pages"..and there are still some sponsors ads..and they are in my experience nowhere near as useful a resource as leatherworker.net is for those wishing to learn and ask advice from pros and experienced hobbyists. *My opinions only..I do not speak, nor claim to speak for Johanna. I forgot something..every time that you look at a page on a website..it costs that website owner money..that is called bandwidth..you'd know that if you ran your own website(s) ..bandwidth bills ( depending on where the site is hosted ) can get big quickly, they are on top of server rental charges and software rental charges..
  5. ^^^ What Tom said in his first line. I'm not a customer of any of the advertisers here, nor am I ever likely to be, the shipping from the USA would kill me.. But they keep the lights on..people dissing them, ( some posters seem to have vendettas against some advertisers ) and either are so vague that the advertiser cannot defend themselves against what is "innuendo" , ( or even when specifics are mentioned, and the advertiser bends over backwards to try to correct mistakes, they carry on the vendetta ) in a venue which would not exist if it were not for them ( the advertisers ) , is not helping anyone..Members or advertisers. Personally I find the way that all the advertisers here help out people ( especially with machine problems ) who are not their customers..is to be commended..I wish it was that way the world over. I spent 3 hours earlier today on the phone with a ( USA based, the biggest one ) domain registrar ( not the only registrar with whom I have domain names, but the one with whom I have the largest number, for the longest time )with whom I have hundreds of domains registered for the last 20 years or so, someone there made a mistake, cost me time and money..But their supervisory support staff did all they could to fix it..and did so..courteously..IME,( from dealing with many companies worldwide, for many decades ) the customer service from USA and Canadian companies is the best there is. :) edited... to include the Canadians..who have also always been great to deal with.. ps..my French bank ( business account ) screwed up far worse today..charged me a lot of money for a service that I had specifically said I did not want, so I have not ever signed for...They were shut for the weekend by the time that I noticed..They'll probably fix it Tuesday ( they are shut Monday too ) with bad grace ( like they always do..every month a different screw up..and they are the best of the bunch available here..I have tried them all here..businesses here cannot use one that is not based here ) ..Usually they ( any business , or government or state or city hall etc here, banks included , hang up when you , the customer or taxpayer, ) complain about their screw ups, so you have to go see them..my being a large guy, that gets their attention..Next month it will be something else..and so on ..after 3 decades here, I know that good , competent , customer service is a foreign concept here.. In relation to customer service...You guys do not know how lucky you are..
  6. Another + for RockyAussie...you want the expert on Crocodilia..and a huge amount of other stuff and techniques besides..
  7. Laser ? 500 dpi is average for the cheap to mid range ones..that can etch metal..the cheap ones ( diode , not CO2 * ) can do metal ( Alu..and sometimes some Steels ) if you paint the area that you want to etch first. Dental cabinets, lathes..precision cutting tools, cnc gear ..you looking to adopt anyone :)..or visitors who'll cut the lawn , take out the trash, do dishes ..in exchange for use of your atelier ... :) *the 2 in CO2 should be "subscript"..but I'm not logged in ( when I do login the "push" on site crashes my customised FF ) ..and I can't remember if J has the boards set up to allow the more "esoteric" stuff in HTML..Best not to anyway..restrict what can be posted is the best security.
  8. Sorry for the delay Frodo..RL took over for a while..:) Couldn't see the welt on the photos that you posted before..still can't, even on your close up ( I thought you changed your camera a while ago for one with better definition ) ..But 3 layers means you have a welt.. hopefully on the "sharp side" / cutting side.. your "close up" isn't of the "sharp side"/ cutting side :) ..I was kinda surprised that it looked like you didn't ..which is why I mentioned it :) ps..What did you stitch it with ? The Chinese patcher that you posted about ? In which case nice straight lines there..from what most people who have bought them have posted here , they are not easy to control..Powered or hand-wheeled ? pps..I agree with MikeRock..that is one nice blade :)
  9. Plunger spring..maybe in the heads ( behind the ball bearing ) of the "click on" square drive in busted ratchet wrench..? Singer appear to have made up many of their threads and pitches as they went along..even on the same machine. There was someone posted here once ( he did not hang around ) that he had a full set of taps and dies for all Singers..even the old ones..But he never demonstrated that it was so, despite much interest from members..A set of those would be more valuable/ useful to some of us than unobtanium. Don't apologise..great thread.. :) very interesting.. Constabulary, or Jimi, or shoepatcher may well know the pitch ..
  10. I find that keeping a small blob of plasticene near me ( to stick them onto ) when I'm taking things like that apart..and using magnetised tools helps when wrangling all small assemblies..You can demagnetise the tools later if you need to..and remagnetise them again next time.
  11. Make sure not to drop the two tiny screws.....they vanish.
  12. Try a sign shop..lots of panel signs for vehicles use a magnetic sheet* which is then printed onto or has the letters stuck or painted onto..Similar to the magnetic paper that you found, but as a plastic, and waaaaay cheaper..Your local sign shop could probably sell you a piece of a blank sheet, the sheets are pretty big to begin with, and cut easily...I can't remember the brand names ( which would probably be different in the USA ) as it has been around 15 years since I last used them.. HTH :) *peels off the van panel easier than the adhesive ones..leaves no marks. edited to add.. you may be able to get them ready cut to the size that you want if you look for magnetic lables or magnetic labels..One of the office supply companies here in France does them..again I can't remember what they call them ( brand ) ..and it would be in French anyway..They are about 1.5 to 2mm thick ..slightly flexible.. Found some ..in the USA.. https://www.labelmagnets.com/ scroll down..picture at bottom right of that page.. magnetic labels are all over Amazon and Ebay.. Search.. blank magnetic labels Canada .. gets quite a few suppliers in Canada too Apparently Walmart sell blank magnetic sheets too.. https://www.walmart.com/c/kp/magnet-sheets if you have Walmarts in Canada..?
  13. Thank you for posting.. My kind of thread ( 'scuse the pun ) .. :)
  14. Use site:leatherworker.net whatever you are looking for or site:example.com whatever you are looking for "On site" search is very resource ( CPU and RAM ) intensive ..slows the site ( any site ) server down to do it..and not all webmasters have the option to write their own search algorithms ( even if they know how, or wanted to ) especially on forum software..They depends on "plugins" from the forum software. So..use site:example.com ( or whatever the site's name is ) followed by whatever the thing you are searching for.. Works on Google, Bing , Yahoo!, Yandex, DDG, Qwant etc ..even Baidu . You do not need to use "quote marks" with them .. they will use stemming ( or similar ) to try to give results that are what you were looking for, and results that are close...Search is complex.
  15. Rodney will be pleased.. Brits and anyone who knows about Fools and Horses..will get it.. Are you not worried that the knife may cut the stitches during use..or are the photos deceiving me, the welt is not apparent on the knife's edge side of the sheath in the photos ?
  16. dfrensdorff..I seem to remember before ( a year or more ago ) someone saying that Servo+speed reducer+EPS worked well on Techsew..was that you ? Is that all set up at purchase ? Not that I'm in the market, but might well help for others to know.. What is your machine that has it Joe ? a Techsew..or something else ?
  17. Seems ( reading this and other threads ) like the OP ( and all subsequent comments by the OP) was mostly about dissing Springfield..Seem to do that a lot ( dissing Springfield ) ..( in fact dissing pretty much anyone from the local hairdresser on down ) in many threads ..rather than just buy from HO..and re-order from them when stock is getting low.. 20 hides ( restock when down to say 5 ) is not that much to carry , space wise or money wise ) if business is good..For a hobbyist though it would be overkill. Btw..your caps lock keeps getting stuck..reminds me of a very similar guy, posting style, outlook etc ( Bob ) over on "the register" ( IT site ) theregister.co.uk..needs to chill, fix the caps lock, ( the shouting in the head and on the keyboard ) ..only takes one little blood vessel to go to be drowning in medical bills.. IME, buying direct from tanneries, ( I do also buy "wastage" from LVMH etc, and trawl the brocantes etc for snake and other leathers for upcycling ) and the occasional "unusual" lambskin from Italy.. saves time, money, and any potential stress is mitigated.
  18. ^^^ what Tugadude said . Unless of course you enjoy complaining in fora.
  19. You can do it with maths...or ..you can make plywood rectangle to the phone dimensions ( plywood exists in multiple thicknesses , one of which is 15mm ) and use that to substitute for the phone(s)..Some ( looking in an antipodean direction here ) would maybe even use a 3d printer to make a "mock up" phone..Phone shops have plastic mock ups on display, so as to stop customers stealing the real "shiny" :) At 15mm..we know it isn't an iphone ..waaaay too thick.
  20. I also removed my thread cutter..it cut the "tails" too short to "sew back in"...:) All depends on what you are making and how you prefer to work.. Half stitch button ( "jog" button ) is a neat extra..I have one..but don't have any use for it on the machine ( Juki ) that it is fitted on, and as I have the EPS switched off..that cancels the jog button.. Aside..Lady I bought the machine from, had never had the "heel back" explained to her by the dealer that sold her the machine..She was amazed when I did a heel back when testing the machine before I bought it from her..She was basically terrified of the machine..industrial sewing machines can be like that to some people.. My first post here, was to ask for help in understanding the various "unusual" settings on that machine..got no replies.. Then, by the time I had figured some of it out (Efka control box and motor .. and .. differential top and bottom feed system )..I sent a pm to Eric ( gottaknow ) to whom I shall be forever grateful : ) , he sent me a link to the service and operators manual for that machine..
  21. Speed reducer is a "must have"*.. EPS is a nice option if you think that you'll use it.. ( I have one on my Juki 490-4..EFKA control box with very slow speed built in, *doesn't need a speed reducer, although I could fit an additional one and thus be able to make coffee while a stitch was forming ;-)..I keep the EPS switched off ) ..My Singers have speed reducers and servos..no EPS.. If you are getting a machine with a speed reducer and a servo supplied by a dealer, it would be better to let them set up the EPS, if you decide that you want it..EPS can be awkward ( in some cases impossible ) to get working with a speed reducer.. Speed reducers give you waaaay more slow control..and more torque..to better punch through .. EPS is really a "garment industry" thing for high speed sewing machines..servos can also run fast.
  22. If one buys a Ford or a Toyota..it ( one's warranty ) is with Ford or Toyota..not just the dealer ( who might close down at any time after the sale ) one bought it from ? So..Cowboy ( who are presumably still in business ) ?..if what one bought was a Cowboy ( likewise for other "brands" bought from an official dealer) ..or does it vary from state to state ?
  23. That is so cool.. Street legal ?.. or just water and shore line ? Specs ?..self build ? But ...Impossible to get past the "type verification" here in France.. No customising of engines ( cars or bikes here ) ..only very limited bodywork mods..unless you are not using it on public roads..Had a custom painting / body work / engine work ( bikes, cars boats etc ) business here for 10 years or so..( there are "ways" to make them legit here , for bikes and some cars , trucks , boats etc ..but not for hovercraft ) I know of what I speak. :( I'm within sight, sound and smell of the sea here..would love to build one..I know how to ( resin molding , engines etc included, ) and have sources for all I would need..But local maritime and terrestrial "plod" etc ( even though I have many mates in those services here in France and Brittany ) would "love it"..tell me how cool it was.., want a ride..and then "someone higher up" would say .."nope", can't have that roaming about.. Speed reducer ..self built pulley system .. 5 to 1 ratio..( 200mm to 40 mm ) driven from a servo with a 45mm pulley feeding to 200mm. Servo 550 watt "Jack" ( without needle positioner ) from College Sewing in the UK..about €100.00 + shipping and VAT I've since bought more of them ( servo motors ) direct from China..paying about half that, plus shipping..
  24. I agree with Matt S ..I have the same model Singer ( mine is "bronze" finish ) ..now with servo and speed reducer. Hover craft eh..we made some at school ( engineering class ) many decades ago..loads of fun..making and piloting :) Say Hi! to the eels.
  25. The file uploaded by the OP is an Apple ( iphone ) proprietary** file type..usually I ( or others ) can convert them to something which non iphone users can see..but this time the leatherworker.net board system cannot find the file.. so.. Sorry guys..I cannot convert*** what cannot be found by the system..maybe Wiz or Tom can find it in archives and convert it into something sensible like jpeg ? **works on "idevices" ..does not work in web browsers..not truly "proprietary", but not standard.in the same way as "lightning connectors" are not used by anyone other than idevice users.."shiny" ;-) ***Normally, I , or one of the other members that knows how to, converts them ( heic ) to jpeg if we spot them early enough..
