  1. This is what I use to protect naked leather. Water just runs off. http://ehub41.webhostinghub.com/~miomip5/beenaturalleathercare.com/shop.html#!/Natural-Leather-Protector-16oz/p/35500434/category=9139678
  2. From the FERDCO website: FERDCO has been sold out to Hoffman Brothers in Rosemont Il. 800-323-9120. www.hoffmanbrothers.com Sheridan Leather will be stocking thread, ( the same brand that we were selling). There # is 808-803-3030, fax#:307-674-6683, they are located in Sheridan Wy. www.sheridanleather.com
  3. May I suggest to use 1-1/2" vice the 11/2". Just makes it clearer to read.
  4. Chan Geer would be impressed with the Two Toned lacing. Great job. Bob Stelmack
  5. As electrathon said, If you would like more details on lettering on leather, please see: http://aaleatherbigb...her Article.pdf Hope this helps. Bob Stelmack.
  6. I think, after a search for other systems, that you contact LW Leather and ask if there is a solution to your problems. I've done research in the past and I thought that LW Leather had the best solution for a relatively portable (i.e. can brand anywhere on large projects) branding with moveable type. Otherwise I would have suggested a Hot Stamp & Heat Transfer Press, but those only print near the edge of a project like: http://www.hotstampsupply.com/presses.html The only portable solutions I found were very similar to the LW Leather solution you have: http://brandingirons.com/product/custom-interchangeable-characters/ http://www.brand-first.com/accessories1.htm#125-STD https://www.etsy.com/listing/155750657/interchangeable-char-customized-alphabet?ref=market I would be curious to hear what LW Leather says about your problems. Leatherworker "electrathon" has a lot of experience with lettering on leather. Check out his posts or PM him. Bob Stelmack
  7. Would vinegaroo work with a paint brush? I have tried with brushing it on both sides, letting it dry and cut the leather in half and the leather was black all the way through. The vinegaroo is cheap, but takes some time to make, so I make it in 5 gallon batches. Here is how it is made: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=14946&hl=vinegaroo&page=1 Bob Stelmack
  8. Yes. The pores are sweating in the summer heat and the goose bumps get in the way in the winter. ;-)
  9. Cheap generator from Harbor Freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=Gas+Engine+Generators
  10. When I bought my FERDCO machines (Pro-2000, 441 clone), TK-1245 (Pfaff 1245 clone), TK-206 (Consew 206RB-5 clone) the only thread they recommended way Polyester. Didn't know much about sewing then and didn't know that there was another type until I tried to get more thread after FERDCO closed up business. I've had those same machines for 7-years now and none of them have ever skipped a stitch. I haven't argued with success. I only use black, brown, straw and white thread. Maybe nylon have a wider range of colors. That's my story, and I'm stick'n to it. Bob Stelmack
  11. Try thinner coats or use a 50/50 Resoline/Water mixture in 2 thin coats.
  12. This tape does not wash away. It does not interfere with machine stitching. It is not completely clear (slightly cloudy depending on the surface), but it is normally inside a stitch line where it can't be seen. It is a strong adhesive and holds well for sewing construction. I normally don't use water after sewing. The extra bits can be rubbed of smooth surfaces. It does not work well with lacing because the rough side of the lace can pick up bits of the tape which make the lacing drag a bit, but you can rub off the extra as you move along. Hope this helps.
  13. ...or 60 yards of 1/4" from http://www.wawak.com/products/product.cfm/pid/8677/Leather-Tape-1-4-x-60-yds/ for $4.75. They also have 1/2 tape. Bob Stelmack
  14. Nice, but I would have used white/straw colored thread... Bob Stelmack
  15. You said: "Stelmackr were you the person from a post nearly a year ago who had a copy of the leather working manual from The leather connection?" YES You said: "I been trying to contact the owner of the site about information on the books and haven't heard back. Do you know if he's still selling his books?" I purchased around 2005 when I lived in England. I have not contacted Francis since then. He mentioned several times that he was in failing health. If you would like I could sell you my copy. Just PM me and I could give you details. Bob Stelmack

  19. Email from Hide House 8/27/14: We would like to inform you of both good news and bad news. The bad news first, as recent National & International News coverage of our beautiful Napa Valley shows we were struck by a 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake early Sunday morning the 24th. Although our buildings are in tact and structurally safe we suffered massive shelving systems failure in one of our three buildings. Unfortunately this area housed our greatest variety of leathers and left us with a landscape of twisted metal, shelving and of course our beautiful leather hides. "We are not going to sugar coat this" It is an unmitigated disaster. Now for the good news!! Unlike some of our fellow wineries etc, who actually lost their product due to breakage, our inventory is believed to be 90-95% intact. Our challenge is to dismantle the mess and re-build as quickly as possible. We want you, OUR VALUED CUSTOMER, to know we have every intention of staying in business & building a bigger and better Hide House to better serve you. Our only concern is that we ask you to please be patient and understand the process that lies ahead of us. We currently are taking orders, by phone, fax, online or email, with the intentions of shipping at our earliest convenience. Please don't hesitate to place your orders as we will be shipping in order received chronologically, no exceptions. Below are some pictures of our warehouse. Thank you for your valued support and we look forward to serving you soon!!! The Hide House Team www.hidehouse.com
  20. A friend of mine show me how to place some low tack shelf lining paper over the leather and the paper prevented the black dust from landing on the surface. This was demonstrated to me with a veg tanned piece, but I assume it would work for chrome tanned. Bob Stelmack
