  1. I love archeology and always laugh at the surprises it holds for the experts. For some reason they know modern mans brain is no larger or smarter now than then but they always think its some kind of miracle when they discover ancient products that are so well thought out and built so well.
  2. Very cool article. I look all over with my metal detector and all i find are beer pull tabs from the 70s maybe i should look somewhere besides my backyard lol.
  3. Used to be a fellow here that had free patterns and instruction's for builds. JLS leather i believe. You might search the site.
  4. i just use scrap leather strips cut to the width and height i need.
  5. Search oil tanned goat hide, leather or some such it may help, Kobicha is a Japanese word for brown. Oil tanning is a process of tanning hides.
  6. swivel knife on lathe 2.0 put this phrase in the search function for some good info by mmason who also machined one
  7. cool What is the reasoning for the two piece bottom, main body and second shaft, ? The one i have is built with the thumb piece has a tube attached that slips over the shaft on the main body. There is a pressed dimple or punch mark on the tube if you will that keeps the finger rest tube from coming off the shaft. There must be a groove the the dimple rides in hidden inside the tube. I can post you a pic if you would like, a set screw would/ could do the same thing. The construction methods used on my swivel knife are Knurled Main body with the blade held in with a set screw, A second threaded shaft which screws into the top of the main body for length adjustment with a jamb nut to keep it in place then the finger rest and tube that slips over the top of the second shaft that is held in place with a pressed dimple riding in a groove on the top of the adjustable shaft that allows for the pivoting action.
  8. Right as i understand the earlier smelting processes of bog iron, a typical hearth would produce bloom of about the same size every time as it would hold only so much ore so then after forging to get the impurities out they would have comparable size pieces of iron, my mistake calling them cast ingots.
  9. Or you can try printing out your font then case your leather as you would to tool it, use a stylus to outline your font lightly onto the leather then either emboss it and paint it or just paint it without embossing.
  10. painting Initials without stencils takes practiceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....... A ton of it. Start with basic calligraphy on regular paper then advance to script liner brushes on smooth surfaces. then you can use regular acrylic paints on leather. Many books on the subject it is a very old form of art.
  11. Thank you.
  12. A guy learns something new every day. Thank you. i would think maybe also the knives were forged from cast ingots so would all would be about the same size and even very close to the same shape from each blade smith making this easier than we might think.
  13. Thank you.
  14. the bottom of the knife with the blade should be the part that doesnt't swivel. The thumb and middle finger are used to turn it on the pivot/swivel that your thumb rests on. It appears to me you have the blade on the part that will be the thumb rest. Is that what i am seeing?
  15. Thanks i was wondering if sewing and forming them then using a blank inside the sheath when tooling them. Of course if it were metal it would have to be covered with plastic or something to keep from staining the leather. Your way sure works very well.
  16. no i saw it lol knew what you were thinking when you deleted it.
  17. LOL I know what you are thinking or pretty darn close I'll bet.
  18. So do you sew or form the sheath before tooling or after?
  19. Made my day ! beautiful workmanship on both the knives and the sheaths. Very interesting the way you / they put the seams down the center of the back.
  20. the smaller stamp looks better, as well the border is much better.
  21. Really nice set. What weight leather in the belt? The double stitching looks great.
  22. I like them both, reminds me of an early day patch knife/ flint striker and the way you did the belt loop is really cool.
  23. thrift stores/ used clothing stores/ yard sales if they have those in France
