What is Mycelium Leather? Does it exist?
tsunkasapa replied to RobertoDR69's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
It is mushroom 'leather'. While I have heard of it, I have no experience with it. It is nothing that I am likely to try. -

I don't think that would be a very good idea. Check out the MSDS on them, there are things in there you don't want to put in your body. -
My wife's grandfather used to say "A farting horse will never tire, a farting man is the one to hire."

I don't do anything, including lining. Never been any reason to. If it gets wet, take the knife out until it's dry. But as Chuck said "use a good outdoor water resistant conditioner for boots and outdoor gear" to minimize that issue.

It leaves FAR faster than it comes in.

Post a picture of the bag. Most of us won't click on a link we don't know anything about.

The blade has far to do with it. Any 'handle' that fits and is comfortable will do the job. But a quality blade is a must.

How to keep a swivel knife sharp?
tsunkasapa replied to RedCliffsLeatherwork's topic in How Do I Do That?
I strop every time I pick up the swivel knife and after every use. If it's a big project I may do it several times before I'm done. As to sharpening, if stropping isn't effective, sharpen. -
Using the brains is a tanning method and will give you leather, not rawhide. Rawhide is just that, RAW hide, that has had all meat and fat scraped off with no further processing. And members of the deer family, (deer, elk) have hollow hair that breaks off very easily. So, hair on deer hides will shed FOREVER!

Has anyone bothered to check the Ph of the solution? Here is a quote from Wikipedia; Iron(II) sulfate is sold as ferrous sulfate, a soil amendment[20] for lowering the pH of a high alkaline soil so that plants can access the soil's nutrients. This would lead one to assume that it is an acidic compound, hence needing to be neutralized.

Leather Sap 8.5" impact device, Slapjacks, sap, blackjack, Paper weight

Be aware that these are illegal in MANY jurisdictions. I would check before carrying one around. -
Try moving them further in from the corner. You are fighting 'leverage'.

I think you worry too much about things that simply don't matter. -

Based on what you are saying, Resolene isn't going to help the situation. As a construction worker, all my leather stuff takes a beating. No finish will change that. If you want something that will resist abuse, use Kydex.

I was the MB councilor for the Leatherworking MB for decades. I can't think of ANY way to complete the requirements in 4 hours if done properly.

It is CHROME tanned, and ANLILINE dyed. That doesn't get rid of the smell, but does give insight to the product. Here is a link to a page that goes into details. What Is Aniline Leather? - BestLeather.org

Here in ranch country, I get asked to put all that into the project. Folks that raise cattle know how those get there.

I used a utility knife in the building trades for about 45 years, and I have one hanging on the board in my work room. But I doubt it's been off the peg since I hung it up 8-9 years ago. The only thing I use is a round knife. The utility knife totally obstructs my view of what I'm cutting, Xacto knives are too flimsy, and neither of them come sharp enough for my tastes. If I have to stop and polish them, I might as well strop my round knife. I do use the rotary cutters on chrome tan, both straight and scalloped.

I worked hay from 6 until I was 18 back in the 60s, early 70s. At that time the harrow bed put us kids out of work The only hay to be bucked after that was packing it in containers for shipping. They even tore down a lot of the traditional barns to build ones that would accommodate the harrow beds. The round bales aren't used here at all, but there are a few that use the big 4x4x8 bales. -
I'll tell them what they want!

The Trend of Leather that Scuffs easily.

I only wear work boots, have my whole life. The only time in my adult life that I had dress shoes was in the Army, and I left them AND the Army behind nearly 50 years ago. The work boots get Obenauf's once a month in dry weather, weekly in the winter. -
I am fortunate enough to have a nationally known fish egg company here in my home town. Even MORE fortunate my dad and the founder were great friends. So I just swing by the plant and pick up a dozen or so of those low profile jars they pack the eggs in. They are almost impossible to tip over.

I've heard them called 'swamper' and they are used for forming the seat of saddles into the tree, as well as other projects that need to be formed into a curved formation. Whether from wood or ceramic, they need to be very smooth to avoid marring the leather.
