  1. In that case, back stitch 2-3 stitches and cut flush with the surface, no flame needed.
  2. Bob Klenda had an article about them in one of the last couple Saddler's Journals. I will look when I get done with chores.
  3. Looks a lot like a halberdman that was wondering what to do now that the war is over.
  4. No, absolutely not. But then I do not use nylon or polyester threads or put acrylic finishes or aints on leather. Nor do I use a sewing machine. Oddly, my life is not diminished because of that. And yes, There is fish leather.
  5. You CAN stamp and tool it, just as other veg tan. But it will be much harder to see your tracing and guide lines.
  6. So here is a question about vegan leather. After they skin the vegans, is it chrome tanned or veg tanned?
  7. Great idea! And on a smaller scale I would think painting pads would work as well. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
  8. I have. I currently don't have Pro Dye, but here is a link to the MSDS for it. It is all alcohol. Microsoft Word - Dye Reducer_GHS (springfieldleather.com)
  9. For the record, I just use denatured alcohol for reducing. I've even used 99% isopropyl. Either one gives fine results. Also, screw the cap on the bottle really tight and shake the stuffing out of it. Mix it up really well.
  10. You do not say whether you are hand or machine stitching. Two totally different critters.
  11. It is mushroom 'leather'. While I have heard of it, I have no experience with it. It is nothing that I am likely to try.
  12. I don't think that would be a very good idea. Check out the MSDS on them, there are things in there you don't want to put in your body.
  13. My wife's grandfather used to say "A farting horse will never tire, a farting man is the one to hire."
  14. I don't do anything, including lining. Never been any reason to. If it gets wet, take the knife out until it's dry. But as Chuck said "use a good outdoor water resistant conditioner for boots and outdoor gear" to minimize that issue.
  15. It leaves FAR faster than it comes in.
  16. Post a picture of the bag. Most of us won't click on a link we don't know anything about.
  17. The blade has far to do with it. Any 'handle' that fits and is comfortable will do the job. But a quality blade is a must.
  18. I strop every time I pick up the swivel knife and after every use. If it's a big project I may do it several times before I'm done. As to sharpening, if stropping isn't effective, sharpen.
  19. Using the brains is a tanning method and will give you leather, not rawhide. Rawhide is just that, RAW hide, that has had all meat and fat scraped off with no further processing. And members of the deer family, (deer, elk) have hollow hair that breaks off very easily. So, hair on deer hides will shed FOREVER!
  20. Has anyone bothered to check the Ph of the solution? Here is a quote from Wikipedia; Iron(II) sulfate is sold as ferrous sulfate, a soil amendment[20] for lowering the pH of a high alkaline soil so that plants can access the soil's nutrients. This would lead one to assume that it is an acidic compound, hence needing to be neutralized.
  21. Be aware that these are illegal in MANY jurisdictions. I would check before carrying one around.
  22. Try moving them further in from the corner. You are fighting 'leverage'.
  23. I think you worry too much about things that simply don't matter.
  24. Based on what you are saying, Resolene isn't going to help the situation. As a construction worker, all my leather stuff takes a beating. No finish will change that. If you want something that will resist abuse, use Kydex.
