Speed Holster
AzShooter replied to AzShooter's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
The welt is 1/4 inch. Here's the back. I used a clip because in Steel Challenge you don't draw, you start at 45 degrees. I've decided not to use the clip and I'm making a new holster with a backing that's made of two thicknesses of 10 ounce leatherfor more straight. It's 7 inches long and I fold the top to fit my 1 1/4 inch belt. It's screwed to the holster with 3 t-nuts and 8/32 screws. -
Super job in every aspect. Burnishing is one of the best I've seen. Love Alligator. You nailed it.

My weekend project, a speed holster for my 617 revolver. 7 ounce leather with a 7 ounce lining. Chocolate dye with two coats of resolene and final coat of Milk Oil. Not really needed for speed but that's the copy of an old holster design I did. For this type of shooting the gun is not drawn from the holster. I like carrying my gun on my hip instead of carrying a bulky box from position to position.

Cool... Lots of work went into that and you nailed it.

Rifle Scabbard

Awesome work. Love all of it, especially the tooling. -
Second one is excellent as well. Thanks for the link. I ordered a couple of patterns. Can't beat the price.

Most excellent! That looks very impressive.

I tried to do a shark skin holster yesterday, and Avenger style, but after it was done I found the shark skin to be very pliable and I'm skeptical about it holding up without being backed by leather. Yours looks marvelous. Did you line it? I'm now making a wallet out of the shark skin. I've got a lot of it. Last wallet I made my wife's brother now has. He likes it.

Congratulations on your first wallet. Now the fun starts. You did good for a first attempt.

Impromptu money clip
AzShooter replied to DaveP's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Looks good and I wish I had it. But us old Italians just use a rubber band around our wad of cash. Yeah, like I've ever had a wad of cash. -
Thanks Fredk. I thought that too so I re did the edges. They came out much better after some sanding with 400 then 800 sandpaper and burnishing. I forgot to take pictures because when I showed it to my friend he asked for it.

Awesome work.

Two Brownings
AzShooter replied to chuck123wapati's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Looks like you have a definite plan of attack. Holsters look very good and you have a decent pattern to follow, that's the secret. Your tools are magnificent. That takes a lot of leather for the Brownings and you nailed it. -
That looks fantastic so far. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Bring it into your Tandy. They may just replace the leather for you. Here's a hint, if the manager doesn't help you ask for the district manager's phone number. Go up the line until you get satisfaction. Tandy is one of the best companies for taking care of their customers.

Noob having trouble cutting leather from pattern
AzShooter replied to HallisChalmers's topic in How Do I Do That?
You say you use an ordinary ruler when you are cutting. Get a ruler with a cork bottom and that will help a lot. I sit in my wheelchair when I'm doing leatherwork. I use a standard size dinner table as my work bench, I have a 24 X 36 self healing cutting board like a seamstress would use. I got it off of Amazon. It helps me keep my project from moving. If you can, instead of tracing your pattern with an awl or pen, if it's a plastic pattern use it for your straight edge and just cut along the lines. For long cuts I cut as much as I can then move my project and cut the rest, I find it easier to keep things straight instead of one full length cut. Hope this helps. -
I got frisky today and decided to make another holster. This one is cut out for a C-More Slide Ride red dot sight. I used a stamped belt hook. This is my third attempt at carving so I'm open to suggestions. There really is a flower in there and my initials. I had the welt completely sewn on and tried to fit the gun. I didn't trim the inside of the web so the gun only went in a few inches. I quickly took it apart, trimmed the girth of the web and sewed it back on. The gun now fits perfectly and goes in just far enough for the C-More to sit on the front of the cutout. Retention is excellent but I may put a pressure screw on it in the future. So: Comments are welcome.

Ace Hardware sells brass straps and would fit the purpose.

It gets worse after 70. I have to keep a dictionary next to my computer and a Thesaurus helps a lot.

You might try a conditioner like Leather Rejuvenater. I picked some up at Tandy when my leather was cracking. I first used Neatsfoot Oil and then the Rejuvenater. Hopefully this will help you.

My Roy Rogers version
AzShooter replied to Thescandall's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Wow, you did a fantastic job. I wish I had a machine. Today I made a wallet with all hand stitching and it took me 3 hours. -
I picked up a couple of Ostridge skins at Tandy recently and today I decided to make a wallet out of the red one. Stitching by hand so I'd like comments from anyone willing to critique. I forget what type of leather I used for the interior. It's 2 oz and I think it's pig skin, again from Tandy.
