  1. Yes, you can use that tool. Also, a very sharp round knife on its edge works well/better. A number of other knifes will work too. The key to it is it must be very, very sharp. If it will not dry shave the hairs on your arm, it needs to be sharper. Do not cut yourself with this test, it will hurt and you will bleed if you do.
  2. Here is the slot cutter I made. The main advantage is that every slot is perfectly straight to the other slots.
  3. No one has mentioned this so I will throw it on. Oxalic acid is pretty harsh. Read the MSDS on it. If you are going to use the stuff, wear gloves and keep it off of your skin.
  4. Two things. Strapping does not sharpen the tool, it keeps it sharp. Compound is so fine it would take a very long time to do any serious metal removal to sharpen. Also, putting the tip into the cut and rotating may polish up the sides of the punch some, but it will equally remove the the tip from the cutting edge, similar to a knife going back and forth cutting edge down on a strop.
  5. Bob Beard will be teaching in Portland Oregon Sept 11-13, 2014. Special thank you to Oregon Leather for hosting this class. We will be making a belt buckle and a composition book cover. Both will have a tree of life tooled and painted in classic Bob Beard style. $250 for the three days of learning. Bob will also have his "black crack" tools for sale at the class. This is going to be an awesome learning experience. Please contact me if you have any questions or to sign up. Aaron
  6. But look at what is is causing... Your head is all tipped to the side from trying to read it.
  7. Pictures would help, but I will give a shot. Normally, leather will hold up just fine with just a slit cut. If the leather is pretty soft it could be an issue, but as you have said there is already I doubt that you can run your machine around it. It also is likely more than most machines for home use can do. I have not seen any buttonhole attachments for commercial machines.
  8. Well, if it is for you and you wear your belt "backwards" then it is correct for you.
  9. Looks nice. Only critique is the mark is reversed. A male belt has the buckle on the left side, so if it is on the person the mark is upside down. Aaron
  10. You are describing a dull knife, so you need to start by sharpening it. the Tandy knives are far from high quality steel, so even if you get it sharp it is likely to not hold an edge well. Paul at Leather Wranglers sells awesome knives. It will arrive sharp and will hold an edge amazingly well. Aaron
  11. This would be a great question for Paul Zalesak (who ironically was teaching in Eugene last weekend). His knives are some of the best anyplace and being an obsessive compulsive university professor he will likely be able to explain it.
  12. I let leather dry and rewet it fairly often. While it is not the first choice, it has never caused me an issue.Aaron
  13. The lace is backwards. The inside is on the outside. Look at the outside when you are lacing, not the inside.
  14. Try wiping it down with lemon juice, wipe the whole piece, not just the spot.
  15. Leave a cloth touching it so that it will help wick out the oil as soon as it is near the surface.
  16. Also, keeping it thin allows flex. The more flex, the less likely it is to tear the cover off the Bible. Yes, a cover can destroy the very book it is designed to protect.
  17. For the most part, almost all of the leather you see has already been split. The reason it is even thickness is because it was split well. If you have a hide that varies in thickness or has a rough looking back on it that if the fault of the leather tannery when they were working with the hide.
  18. Belly leather can be used but the density and strength of it if the lowest quality leather. The shoulder leather will be more even on the texture throughout the leather. Veg tan is a lot easier to split due to the firmness compared to the softness/flexibility of chrome tan. But either can be split to a given thickness with a good splitter.
  19. The class today went well, one more day left.
  20. Drill the holes.
  21. Paul Zalesak will be teaching a notebook cover class this weekend Friday and Saturday in Eugene Oregon. $150 for the two day class, this is an awesome deal! Contact me for more information. Aaron
  22. Leather weld. It looks like white glue. Holds well during wallet assemble\y. Very friendly to sew through. Water soluble. Sets up reasonably fast.
  23. To the best of my knowledge there is only one stainless tool in the Craftool line (it is a cam tool). Not sure if it is on close out. The pro series tools (the stainless ones) are not on close out.
