Clicker dies are quite expensive. There are quite a few makers out there. Look at the top of the main page there is a link to Texas dies. You CAN use a mallet DEPENDING on the size of leather and the die. Most dies are made from your drawings.

Did you check Tandy? This is something they would have a kit of.

Put a light coat of neetsfoot oil on it and let it sit 12 hrs min. Hard to take any staining or discoloration off veg tan. If it gets water spot on it wet whole piece so it discolors at same time. Black spots from iron can sometimes be removed with bar keepers friend.(oxcilic acid). You can oil before or after dyeing or both. A little goes a long way with neetsfoot. Dye will dry it out even more.

Try leaving more in front of the pierce. I leave 1.5 inch or so instead of the .5 inchar and that solved my problem.

No problem. I found some 8/32 are home depot and ran the head around a drum sander for a second and they fit in a line 24 snap. In a pinch it gets the job done.

Looking for this style of belt buckle

The one at Tandy is called a Conway buckle. It's designed for tack applications. -
I'd search for blacksmithing in your area. If a living history places check with them. Also look in reenactment area here might be someone who does the work.

Have any machine shop bore out an Arbor press and put in a set screw. Only problem is the hand setters have various diameter shafts might have to put a sleeve on some. Just search Arbor press modification on YouTube.

They have a hot pink eel at my local Tandy.

First project - holster
Mattsbagger replied to mbelmores's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
You don't have to do anything with the inside. Some laminate so you have smooth leather inside and out. Some line with suede. All holsters will cause some wear eventually. Good job btw. Way better than my first go. -
I'm all for a good video. It don't need any music.

Wife and I are going to Sheridan in May. She want to buy leather there where we can compare quality and see it hands on. Is this a good plan or nah? Never been before and not really sure what is what. Any advise would be appreciated. Ta. Matt.

I have the long wallet template. Very nice and quick shipping. Now if you had a Roper and 5 inch biker I would be interested in those too.

Check knifekits. They have a bunch of holster parts http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=41_56_411

Yep probably chisel not pricking irons. Chisel Japanese style. Pricking irons European style. Overstitch wheel American/Western style. Stitch groove is mostly Western style. Scratch line/crease is more common in England and Europe. Nigel Armitage has some awesome videos on hand stitching styles and techniques also reviews. Well worth the time to watch. IMO
-
Pricking irons are meant to just mark for an awl. Stitching chisel is meant to punch all the way through Japanese style. Not trying to be a knob. It's not a terminology thing they are used different. It can cause confusion.

Sharpies are basically spirit dye in a pen. I haven't painted with acrylic personally but look at the holsters there are ones that are completely painted. Resoline is a very hard finish. Holsters get about as much abuse as anything. Something flexible and getting bent all the paint won't hold up. Look at Bob "hidepounder" Parks tutorials on here.
-
Tandy Cova colors are acrylic. Lots of people use the stuff from hobby lobby all the time. You just need a steady hand and seal well over the top of it. Carefully seal it. If you wipe across it with say Resoline to wet it will smear as acrylic is water based. I've useful sharpies others use gel ink pens.

Well she finished up her belt buckles. Did a double loop lace on one. I don't lace so she watched YouTube videos to figure it out. Not bad for the first go IMO. She also used the motor burnisher but preferred finishing it by hand.
