They usually just had a loop around the hammer spur with this style of holster back in the day. Beautiful basket weave nice and crisp.

I think it takes much practice but in the meantime here's how i do it. lol I punch each piece separately from the finish side then glue using small brass brads about every inch or so to line up the holes then use an awl to clean and make sure they are in line. I use a piece of soft wood, pine, as a punching board and some beeswax for lube.

LOL great work reminds me of a time I and a friend ran across a sleeping black bear while bow hunting.

Well said ! i will add if you cant sharpen a good tool its no better than a cheap one. I have found much of my problems stem from just a few basic things none of which are the tools fault. 1.Keeping your tools sharp, learning to sharpen is one of the most necessary things IMO. 2.Patience. Slow down take your time. I used to get in a hurry and just didn't take the time really needed for a good job, like beveling I don't care for beveling and if I don't watch myself i get in a hurry and it really shows. 3.Getting in over my head, I'm the first to admit I try projects and techniques far above my experience and suffer for it, Disclaimer ; a person has to stretch the limits but they also have to realize the outcome wont be great for a while. 4. Not finishing correctly , goes right along with patience i used to tend to hurry my project and skip steps that although didn't seem necessary at the time really deterred from the finished project, follow the steps all the way through.

Just posted this pic in another thread and it got me to thinking. How about showing off your stocking stuffers and easy projects for holiday gifts so we can all get some ideas. this is super easy can be made from scrap pieces and colored however you like. I skived it thin after tooling died with vinegaroon and added some pearlesent colors very lightly to make it shine like a crow feather.

never tried it but neodymium magnets are really strong they may be the ticket, i have bought flat 1 inch square ones and they come with a 1/8th inch plastic spacer between, if you get two stuck together its almost impossible to separate them.

deer cannot be tooled to my knowledge, the roll type is great for backgammon because the dice cups double as ends for the roll and everything fits inside.

i would use deer hide or some such light leather if you want it to bunch up like a bag and dye the squares on it. If you want to tool it try a tuck and roll pattern, cut the lines then bevel both sides, use a seed stamp for the buttons and cut some fold lines similar to the center pattern on my backgammon board.

if you have s drill press Frodo chuck them up and use a file then some sand paper to finish the process.

maybe post some of your own and they will change, i think that is what happens but dont know for sure.
